Waratahs reset: 2022 squad taking shape

By jeznez / Roar Guru

Darren Coleman should be back in Sydney by now.

His Los Angeles Giltinis won their title last weekend and it was reported he’d be flying back in the following days.

I imagine he’s sitting in hotel quarantine ramping up planning for the Waratahs 2022 season.

The Waratahs have been announcing signings through their reset ’22 campaign and the squad is already looking a lot stronger. Thirty players have been announced, so there should be five full contracts left available.

Let’s look at the leavers.

Joe Cotton has gone to Bristol, Chris Talakai to Bayonne, Jack Dempsey to Glasgow, Tepai Moeroa to the Melbourne Storm and Jack Maddocks to Pau.

There are a number of full contract players from last season that have not been announced as either leaving, nor announced as re-signed. Sio Tatola, Sam Caird, Carlo Tizzano and Charlie Gamble all sit in that boat.

Last year’s short-term contract and Extended Playing Squad players that we haven’t heard news on yet are props Darcy Breen and Vunipola Fifita, backrower Michael Wood, halfback Henry Robertson and winger James Turner.

But enough on who is not there. Who are the 30 signed so far?

Angus Bell will be the starting loosehead and is joined in the squad by another very promising young player, the 19-year-old Adrian Brown.

Brown’s highlights on YouTube show a promising scrummager and strong ball carrying. Definitely one to watch having been signed to the Waratahs Academy as a 17-year-old and making his Shute Shield debut at 18.

Dave Porecki remains at hooker with Tom Horton hoping his third season will be stronger than his second.

A third hooker is required. Cotton is a big loss; the alternates used in the last two seasons are nearing the end of their careers and we need someone developing.

Harry Johnson-Holmes will remain as the starting tighthead, based on the squad so far, with Tiaan Tauakipulu hoping to be over the injuries that kept him out after his promising debut in 2020.

Tet Faulkner can prop on both sides but is slowing down. One more prop will be needed to support this group.

If Cabous Eloff is deemed the first choice tighthead at the Rebels then I’d love this to be Pone Fa’amausili – he’d be first choice at tighthead and it would force great competition among Johnson-Holmes and the other props.

Jack Whetton and Max Douglas are the pure locks in the side. Whetton played injured last year, so the side will be looking for stronger performance this season.

Light lock/hybrid backrowers seem to be the one area fully loaded in the squad so far. Ned Hanigan and Jed Holloway are welcome returnees, joining Jeremy Williams and Hugh Sinclair.

One or two of that prior group will be playing lock, while others will back up Lachlan Swinton at 6.

Michael Hooper is back at openside, and we need a player to back up to develop. I’d love this to be Tizzano but he already looks ready to start somewhere.

Rahboni Warren-Vosayaco is listed with both his positions of centre and number 8, with Will Harris continuing and youngster Langi Gleeson added.

I’ve only watched Gleeson’s highlights but he moves like a young David Lyons, a big man with a smooth running style and deceptive step.

A man of the match performance for the Waratah As versus the Brumby Runners last year showed Gleeson’s promise only two years after leaving school.

Jake Gordon and Jack Grant are the halves. A third halfback is needed, this may be Robertson from the EPS.

Michael McDonald back at the Force last season, was a big loss and too good a young player to be getting the minimal minutes he’s likely to see.

At flyhalf, Will Harrison and Ben Donaldson have both been retained. Potentially one of them plays fullback with Maddocks departing.

In the midfield, Lalakai Foketi, Tane Edmed, Joey Walton and Izaia Perese are all back, with the aforementioned Warren-Vosayaco capable of playing here as well.

Sports opinion delivered daily

James Ramm, Alex Newsome, Mark Nawaqanitawase and Triston Reilly round out the outside backs.

So, what is needed in those last five spots Coleman needs to fill?

A tighthead prop, hooker, openside and halfback are non-negotiable.

As much as I’d like another pure lock in the squad, the number of hybrid 5/6s puts paid to that. Another centre would be nice but the last spot really has to be a fullback.

All of Harrison, Donaldson, Nawaqanitawase, Ramm and Perese can play the custodial role but it isn’t the first choice for any of them yet.

Much will depend on injuries and where Warren-Vosayaco plays.

Will be interesting to see who Coleman identifies for the remaining roles.

This Waratahs side are not likely to be challenging for the title next year but look well set up to take some significant strides forward.

Thanks for the positive read Jez. I’d say these signings are returning the Tahs to being competitive at best. We will get to see a few new faces return, but no indication of the next big thing for mine? Can we put Tizzano’s head on Marky Marks body, to get a tackling and attacking freak?

Like the WBs Jez, another 3-4 years for the very very young tahs before they really hit the straps. Sooo much young talent. I must admit I am reserving judgement on Coleman until he proves his worth at professional level over here but from what I have read it feels like they are in the right hands under a guy committed to developing a team up from a low base (not at any fault of Penney of course). My main two wishes are: 1. Get the defence to improve. This is a non-negotiable and doesn't come down to skill or experience but heart. 2. Continue to improve and develop the players, getting an uplift in performance from them would be excellent. Of interest, Marky N. If Coleman can get him to realise his potential he will be a superstar.

Fair enough. He has the physical attributes, just needs to learn the game a bit more.

Yep, Tupou at 30-35mins and then Uelese and Bell at the 60 minute mark. We finally have a more than respectable scrum and big frontrow which, on the plus side, are all young (bar Slipper) or with plenty still to give (AAA is only 28).

The pair of them are hugely promising players and will only hit their full potential if they are both starting. How Foote manages them next year is going to be very interesting, I really do think one will need to move to Tahs or Force. If Tauakipulu can have a strong season then I’d say Force to replace Medrano.

He’s a good player. He needs more minutes like Jez said.

Tahs have the best feeder comp in the world. Their problem is at board level. Also Eloff is a hero and I can’t wait for him to be wallabies qualified

I’m not saying he’s not a big strong individual. Everyone else’s game seems to be picked to pieces, why should he be immune? Because he’s big? That’s daft

Sure, in a perfect world each Super side would be stocked only by players that came from local clubs. Tahs wouldn’t need Eloff or Fa’amausili if we lived in that world.

I think that's fair the last couple of seasons, is a bit strange given that for a long time under Gibson they were a smaller pack thriving on work rate. Whetton being injured last year looked slow, Faulkner as an older player isn't quick either. Guys like Dempsey really drifted in and out of matches and didn't want to do much defensively, etc. Bell and Johnson-Holmes have great work rate, we may have Hanigan/Douglas as the locking pair which will be a high work rate pair, Swinton really lifted last year add Hooper in and the bones of a hard working pack are there. The number of guys competing for 6/8 means that anyone not putting in is going to fall out so I think any concerns on work rate should correct. We've still a bit of a lack of power players in that pack. That's where I'm a bit more concerned.

I think Tane is going to be a 12, yes he was a 10 for Eastwood but I think that little bit of width will help him. He likes to run. I've seen him standing a bit close to the half when he comes on at 10 for the Tahs and Oz A last year. Doesn't look completely comfortable. Will essentially be a selection battle with Foketi, I think. I'm not certain but think therefore we'll see Harrison and Donaldson as 10/15's and Tane as a 12/10.

I guess the problem with Edmed is if Harrison goes down, Donaldson will be his replacement and the reshuffle will come at fullback if Donaldson has been playing there. Edmed will always be 3rd choice, and will struggle to even get bench minutes. He'd be a loss, but I couldn't blame him if he's looking elsewhere.

My main concern with the Tahs pack for quite a number of years has been the work rate. Rennie expressed surprise at the different conditioning levels of the teams, and I hope the Tahs coaches take that to heart between now and the beginning of next season. Harris appears to have the skills but seems to go missing during games. Holloway could have been a Wallaby but often looks lazy around the park, particularly at 8. Douglas looked like he was getting stuck in when he was given a chance, and I'd like to see more of him. It shouldn't come down to the 7 to make the most tackles. Lets see tackles and ruck security by the tight 5 and the loosies freed up to run and link with the backs.

Rebels are pretty well served with Wilkin and Hardwick. Tough as always to get a gig as a 7 in Oz! I think Nawaqanitawase and one of the 10’s are sounding like the fullbacks. Especially if Pietsch joins. Brumbies probably have a need for a guy like Edmed but I’d be gutted if we lost him.

With Foketi and Perese combining well in the centres late last year, and the ridiculous number of flankers contracted, you could be right with the Waratahs developing a gameplan around a big 12 in Foketi/Warren-Vosayaco which could limit Edmed's opportunities. If I were in his shoes I'd be considering a move to the Brumbies, given Lolesio has had a heavy year and they seem to have lost both their reserve 10s to the Force. Would also be sad to see Gamble leave, but he'd be a good get for a team like the Rebels if the Tahs no longer need him. I'd like to see Nawaqanitawase given another run at 15 because he has all the skills, he just needs to find the aggression!
