Bombers finals Week 1 review: Strange selection choices lost Essendon this game

By Charlie Keegan / Roar Guru

The Bombers’ season is definitely an A+ in my book.

They were expected to be in the bottom four this year after having a traumatic trade period last year when four best-22 players walked out the door.

However this year brought a new coach with new principles and the Bombers played with flare and boldness that I haven’t seen in my decades as a Bombers supporter.

Read on for my thoughts about the Bombers’ elimination final loss against the Bulldogs.

Bombers have a wet weather problem
The Bombers had excellent form coming into the finals, yet it was something of a false dawn given two of their three wins came against bottom-four sides in the Suns and Magpies.

However it was clear on Sunday that they don’t know how to handle wet weather footy, and when you combine it with the pressure of finals it was always going to combine for a perfect storm that resulted in a Bombers loss and the extension of their long, long finals drought.

What stuck out to me was the inability of the Bombers to modulate their disposal in such a way that advantaged their own side, in particular the overuse of the hand pass winning that particular stat by ten.

The other element was the contested ball as the Bulldogs dominated that state as their big midfielders came to the fore with 22 more contested disposals.

The Bombers have failed every time it’s come down to playing in the wet this season, being positively demolished by the Lions earlier in the year, getting smashed by Geelong and largely failing to fire a shot against the Western Bulldogs in this elimination final.

The Bombers were clearly tired by the end of the third quarter as bewildering umpiring and clinical finishing came to the fore as the wet weather dominated the game.

Dylan Shiel’s dog of a day
Twenty-four disposals is a relatively good performance just looking at the top-of-the-line numbers. However, those disposals were at 45 per cent efficiency as Shiel appears to be lacking in confidence.

I have seen people demanding that Essendon trade Shiel. Sadly this does not work as he is on an extremely healthy pay packet.

The problem with Shiel is that he cannot anchor a midfield. We saw this at the Giants where he was the third or fourth best midfielder. When he came to the Bombers he was suddenly the best midfielder the Bombers have.

Now with the development of Zach Merrett and Darcy Parish, Shiel can assume his old role at the Giants where he can burst from the stoppage and remain slightly more on the outside.

He had a dog of a day because the Bombers have no idea how to play in wet weather conditions and the Bulldogs exploited that to maximum effect.

Draper dominates
Sam Draper has been a breath of fresh air this year. Part of that might be his mullet-undercut combo, another part of it might be his enthusiastic celebrations but I think it’s because he is brilliant.

Forty-four hit outs, 18 disposals, and 12 contested disposals is exemplary for a ruckman in the modern game. He is yet another gem from the nether regions of the rookie draft and will only continue to improve.

The one thing I would say he can improve is his goal kicking and ball drop. He is a soccer convert because he became too tall to be a goalkeeper.

All he needs to do is adopt a better ball drop and he will dominate games in like Nic Naitanui as an expert tap ruckman.

Strange selection choices lost Essendon this game
The coaches have earned my respect at Essendon, taking a team that was largely predicted to have a bottom-four finish to the finals. But I do have queries about some of the choices that Ben Rutten and co made at the selection table.

The decision to bring in Jye Caldwell over Dylan Clarke, who can play a more defensive midfielder role, was felt. However, I am backing the decision as I believe the Bulldogs went home, did their homework, and believed that lightning cannot strike twice as this game was the inverse of our preceding clash in the home-and-away season.

The other strange decision was leaving Martin Gleeson on Cody Weightman when he was clearly outbodied by the antagonistic small forward. Note there were far more expletives here in the first draft.

That resulted in six free kicks and four goals. Weightman clearly benefitted from the absence of Nick Hind, who has shown the ability to shut down and rebound.

I am going to back the Bombers to go onwards and upwards next year. If they can make their defence a little more miserly and win some of the games that they lost by a goal then the Bombers will be a threat next year.

One final note
News has come out recently that Essendon player Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti was racially abused on Facebook. This is unacceptable. He is a jet, no ifs ands or buts.

I just want to take the opportunity to shout out ‘Tippa’ in the unlikely circumstance he reads this page. Any Essendon supporter who thinks they can racially vilify any player is not acceptable.

I would appreciate everyone getting around ‘Walla’, who has had a proverbial nightmare this season with the instability and the prospect of another COVID hub season.

He has been a joy to watch and should not cop any abuse. Get around ‘Walla’ because he deserves our support right now.

There are no bests this week because the Bombers need to improve across the board. The Bulldogs match up the best when it comes to the Bombers and there’s a reason we’ve only beat the Bulldogs once in seven years.

It still hurts particularly when contentious umpiring dominated the game, however, this season is most certainly a heathy pass mark for the Bombers and Essendon will get their vengeance on the Bulldogs next year.

Gosh. The wet weather we have seen on tv particularly in Adelaide surprises us Tasmanians as its usually dry here. Besides it was only a couple of years ago that we were praying for rain to ease the conditions here. Still, a long time between droughts and floods here

I agree with you that some of the selections were strange given the forecast wet conditions, but Truck has continually rewarded players for good form. However, an elimination final in Tassie in wet conditions demands selection based on the conditions and the opponents, and not just rewarding good form in previous weeks. It's sad that Hind couldn't play and it would have helped if he did. Early in last quarter we were only 19 points down and within striking distance. That margin was helped with some soft frees resulting in goals. In reality at that stage the real difference may have only been 7 points. Before the rain came Francis looked a million dollars and was marking everything but then the rain came. I agree that Clarke should have played instead of Gleeson and that McGrath should have been down back on Weightman. Waterman was the other player who should not have been selected for a wet game. Disagree on Caldwell, he was useful, far more than Waterman. A final negative for the Bombers were the poor misses at goal, especially early when we could have had 4 goals by mid 1st quarter, and then, again when we had the chance to hit the scoreboard in the 2nd and 3rd quarters we missed another 3 very gettable goals. Getting these goals would have made all the difference. The enthusiasm levels would have been up and the last 15-20 minutes would have been a real dog fight. So, I am disappointed with the result, but saw enough good signs to think that with a few list changes for next year and the coming in of Reid, Baldwin, and return of Jones, Tippa and Langford will make Essendon a reasonable chance to finish in the 3-6 region. Thanks Chuck for a good year.

He didn't really fall through the cracks- the 2016 Draft is very very good for ruckman with Sam Draper, Sean Darcy, Rowan Marshall, Oscar Mcinerny and Tim English all going in that year.

I think truck is a big believer on players learning from their opponents. That’s why he risked caldwell because he wants caldwell to be like libba for us. I was very impressed with his first quarter. But yes he should’ve kept Clarke in.

Yeah I did Lloyd has tempered a lot of the hate towards Weightman but I think his remarks on essendons seasons after finals seasons have all been horrendous he’s bang on. He’s right in that we need to continue to develop a plan b rather than just going after a big name recruit. Thankfully I think truck is keeping a tight lid on things

Rutten should have called tippa in . Very dissapointing and Im sure he’s having some mental issues with iso like all of us at times but the run may have freshioned him up. We needed him so I’m a bit dissapointed. Hooker wasn’t in squad either and Clarke on libs was a no brainer . McGrath replace hind . Sadly langer wasn’t ready but even zhakarakis was idol and Clarke a no brainer. Big game needs big experience with wet track . One area which rutten hasn’t got right that was a bit obvious . He’s had a fantastic year though and I’m happy with pick 11. Rutten maybe overcooked it with kids on wet Perkins a little inexoerienced in it too

I agree in part Chucka, although Clarke's style of play would have been ideal for wet weather football, with his grit and ability to get the hard ball. I also could not understand WHY we picked a player who had been out since R2 to play his first senior game in a cut throat final. At best it would have been a better choice to have him as Med Sub. I think we also made a mistake with Perkins. On form hadn't been spectacular, and Cox deserved a game over him imo. Thanks for bringing up the disgusting abuse of Walla too. I know he's been really hurt by this. These cowards need to be exposed and charged. I cannot believe I am even typing this so many years after Longy's brave stance against Monkhorst. Did you see Lloydy's comments too? We can't afford to be complacent, coz near enough is NOT good enough. Cheers mate and thanks for the great articles.

Yeah my understanding that the issues with tippa is he has been exhausted by all the travel this year. I think it was worth chancing it to see what he could do but we don’t really have anyone else that can do what tippa can do.

Chuck looks like you expanded on my wet weather thought process which I was concerned about . There's definitely a some even more precise errors rutten made with team selection . Wright doesn't go in the wet as I said I. Brisbane he was atrocious and same here he just can't mark it and his centre of gravity is so high . There's a reason the match suited the weightmans . Personally I would have picked tippa as he may have found his mojo our there in the wet he played a prac game the week before but I don't know precisely what the issue is with him another thing everyone is tip toeing about they should provide a little more detail as everyone will then pull even more for him

I'm thinking the samething man that they could lose a couple depending on what happens. I know one thing though they need to hurry up and make a decision as they're already behind the 8ball for next year, well seems like that from the outside anyway.
