Seibold's code switch: ex-Broncos coach joins Eddie Jones in England's RWC quest

By The Roar / Editor

Former Brisbane Broncos coach Anthony Seibold has swapped codes in a bid to help fellow Aussie Eddie Jones win the Rugby World Cup with England.

Seibold has been working as a defensive coach with Newcastle Knights this season, as well as doing some remote consultancy work for Jones, and has accepted a two-year deal with England through to the 2023 World Cup in France.

Seibold will replace John Mitchell as England’s defence coach after Mitchell became head coach at Wasps, while Jones also added the former England hooker Richard Cockerill – an ex-Leicester and Edinburgh coach – to work on the forwards.

“It was too good to knock back,” Seibold said in a statement.

“It really excites me the challenge of international rugby. I had a relationship with Eddie from my days coaching at South Sydney.

“About a month ago he called me out of the blue and asked what were my thoughts on coming on full time. He had been really impressed with the stuff I had done for them remotely. I had a good think about it.

“In the end there were a couple of things for me. One, Eddie is one of the leading coaches not just in rugby, but in the world. That was certainly something that attracted me to it.

“The other one was the challenge of the game, trying to work out the game and add something to the England team.”

Jones said he believes Seibold can help England win the World Cup.

“We’re two years from the World Cup so we wanted to freshen up our coaching team and get the right people in place for where we want to go – which is to win the World Cup,” Jones said.

“Anthony is a coach that I have had a relationship with since 2019 and have followed his career closely. He is a good coach and thinks deeply about the game.”

Les Kiss was an odd choice. Hardly known for his defence. A bit like picking George Rose as a high performance coach.

not too many coaches and backroom staff left who want to work in the environment Eddie creates I wondered about that. Feels to me he is running out of options. I remembered when Proudfoot said how different Eddie's coaching set-up was to that of the Boks, much more technical and layered. Thinks Eddie might be over complicating things.

Bad vibes on Siebold I’m afraid. Eddie obviously doesn’t have good network in Brisbane.

Hahah Nick..I wonder if their salaries were increase significantly by the union whether they will still be running away from an Eddie environment

As for the rebels transition from wessels to assistant coach should be concerning as a similar trend of results will appear... the rebels could be so much more with that forward pack

Good luck to him with England….and that is said genuinely, and not with sarcasm. The unfortunate truth is that there are not too many coaches and backroom staff left who want to work in the environment Eddie creates. So a lot of the choices now look a bit left-field.

Your right we do have a player depth issue but with restricted pathways we have a coaching depth issue as well. Look at the past five years at s/ r level, we had Gibson at the tahs, Wessels at the Rebels, Thorn and Larkam / McKellar finding there feet at their clubs. Thorn / McKellar have kicked on in the last two years helped by some very good assistants but could there progress been sped up if we had Eddie at home. I’m sure of it. We have missed having decent experienced coaches at home. Please don’t bring up Cheika. Those coaches listed could not lean on Cheika for advise or experience. Look what he did to Larkam. The last few years in Aus rugby have been a right off, we have to look fwd now and I would love to have Eddie at home with his experiences not just with England, add Japan and South Africa at home developing our players and more importantly our next coaches.

Eddie thinks Seibold will value add so it'll be interesting to see a) if he's right and b) if he's not, how long Seibold lasts.

Exactly Jimbob, alot of Seibold's criticism in the NRL was that his approach was a little TOO structured and clinical and once the Bronco's started losing games then the players weren't buying into his strategy's as much. Somehow I don't think that will be a problem with England, if anything his (so called) rigid and over analytical approach should translate well.

Seibold will fine under Sir Edward. SA , England , France and Australia will fight it out and finish in that order.

Agree Eddie has had results...with England union team, and deserves his good standing. He did have initial success with the Wallabies but was later dismissed for poor results. He then went on to coach the Reds and was dismissed (or resigned) after the Reds finished bottom of Super Rugby. In both these cases, the teams suffered from a significant number of player injuries. Which comes back to my point that it's the Aus player depth that's the main issue, not the coach.

Parts of the game are different – both codes have in common the need to disorganise a d line – in league it mostly comes from quick play of the balls – you have to create it differently in union from a variety of sources – quick ruck ball, turnover ball, multi phase ball, kick return – but once the ball is there you have to take advantage. Seibold was a fairly intellectual coach by league standards and his analytical approach is probably very well suited to a back room position where you can breakdown tactical situations and pick apart patterns and habits of teams and then use the knowledge to guide training drills and techniques, and to inform game plans. The way you create the space is different but the underlying concepts are pretty similar. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him do well.

He has had results – plus his standing in the games means that his requests have weight to them. League – love it or hate it – is a bit of coaching hot house. Due to the fact the comp is so small – and the talent base so shared plus the levelling effect of the salary cap – the advantages that it takes to be excellent tend to come from the culture and coaching innovation category. It can be a bit insular at times but league offers a lot to it’s big brother in terms of being ruthless about finding and exploring areas of advantage in preparation and tactics. Smart move really.

Don’t understand this one. League coaches have been extremely successful in Union coaching defence. Defence was not a strong suit of Seibold’s, the Broncos went backwards in that department at a rate of notes. The players found his defensive structures confusing. This will be like Grey with the Wallabies if that is his role. Attack? What does he bring. The games are very different strategically in attack. He’s a smart guy so like any too coach he will have some good ideas no doubt and you can often pick things up when you come from outside. But … does that justify a permanent role?

Eddie certainly is an out-of-the-box thinker. He must also be a great negotiator if he can convince English Rugby to back his choices. He's already had a go with the Wallabies but maybe we do need him back here in some capacity. Interesting how so many coaches struggle with the Wallabies but are still well regarded internationally and go on to better success elsewhere. Tells me the main issue with the Wallabies is player depth, not the coach.
