AFL to drop grand final parade due to COVID concerns

By News / Wire

The AFL is reportedly set to forgo its traditional grand final parade for a second consecutive year.

Perth had hoped to host a parade through its CBD as part of its build-up to hosting the grand final at Optus Stadium for the first time.

But The West Australian reported the AFL had instead opted for a free ticketed event, where the two teams would be presented inside an enclosed or fenced space.

“We’re disappointed, but we understand it’s the AFL’s call to make,” Perth Lord Mayor Zempilas told The West Australian.

“We were confident a grand final parade could be delivered safely through the city streets and give the maximum number of West Australians the chance to be part of the grand final experience.

“But we appreciate in this environment the AFL have chosen a more conservative path and we respect their right to do that.

“We will work with the AFL to help deliver an alternate event where the grand final players and premiership cup can still be presented on stage to a ticketed or fenced-off crowd.”

A ticketed event, which would likely be held at one of RAC Arena, Langley Park or Supreme Court Gardens on either the Thursday or Friday before the grand final, allows for a list of registered attendees.

Agreed, I'm on Big footy as well but aside from the teams own pages (which are riddled with negativity) the other, "open" forums are full of immature commenters itching for a fight. I sometimes feel the demographic on there is between the ages of 9-15 lol. I've also noticed what you said about content form here being brought up, which is something I've suspected for a good while now. You should sign up, they don't bother you with emails so no need to worry about that (I'm in the same bought, cannot afford anymore "notification" emails haha)

This is either the AFL protecting its Victoria is the best policy or them punishing WA for not paying anything for the GF.

I don’t think your being cynical at all. I’d say that’s closer to logical then cynical

The cynical side of me thinks the AFL don’t want a non-Victorian state having a successful GF parade. Not to show up the AFL but it would then lead to more calls for the GF to be shared. Even though we have knocked over the “no one can do it like the MCG” well & truely, having a parade that really show cases the game outside of Victoria does not sit with the AFL’s MCG only decision.

It’s a cultural difference Richie. As you say until we can change that in them we are going to have to live with the differences as best we can. When Bill Gates was planning for the Pandemic he stated in his lectures that the groups that were more questioning of the Medias coverage of events would require different levels of support in their re orientation towards the goal of getting injections into every arm in the world. Moslems, Jews. Christians and Indigenous fit in with his ideas here. He’s been planning for this since 2015 when he himself produced a scientific document that said more than global Warming or Terrorism the thing the planet had to fear most was a global Pandemic from a virus so nobody knows more about it than him. Before that his main area of interest was the modification of genes for living organisms to improve them so we know his hearts in the right place. Judging by the police outside the Jewish Synagogues and the constant Media coverage of the Moslem communities Dan Andrews is right alongside him in this thinking here. I think Gates ambitons to get the Nobel Prize should be rewarded in an appropriate way although seeking out Jeffrey Epstein for sponsors was not the act of a normal man. (RIP) I guess when you are the richiest man in the world you can afford to indulge your hobbies. I know his money is behind all the major players including the universities and world health orgs, not to mention the data gathering and statistics and of course the media. He’s the man and you could say there’s no pandemic without him. I’ve no doubt he’ll be more front and centre when the time is right but he’s there behind the scenes moving and shaking. So with our indigenous communities and other cultural groups It’s probably best we re-educate them as you say they may be miss reading the whole thing. Until then I don’t see how we can promote a ceremony like Welcome to Country and then shut them out with a Vaccine Passport. It’s not like there’s just a few of them.

I've never had an email from The Roar. Other than the initial registration email (I think).

Yeah I actually love this site. I’ve been commenting on it for years. Just don’t want anything else to clog up my emails. Been reading big footy pretty much since it began, but refuse to ever sign up to that site. Too much negativity. This site is good and has more positive banter. I may be wrong, but I also think some of the people in powerful positions in footy read the comments section on here. They won’t ever go through the other forums cause there is too much childish name calling and whatnot, but I’ve noticed a few things come up on the footy programs which I’ve read exclusively through this sites comments section.

Channel 7 news, the AFL's mouthpiece, said Terrorism. SEN and Fox say different, meh. Anytime you have three different excuses/reasons for your actions, you're lying. Watching John Howard taught me that.

I read that too. I actually think the AFL might be concerned about security from the point of view that some member of the public could get too close to a player, causing a COVID scare and potentially jeopardising the match the following day. Risk adverse.

Well I don't think it's hypocritical to have a Welcome to Country as Goalsonly described it. I am also sure it won't be 100% of indigenous not wanting the vaccine. Regardless, education and winning trust is the key, rather than accepting the situation. (Anyway the Welcome to Country on Saturday night looked suspiciously like the pre recorded one for last year's Grand Final.)

That’s the worst part Richietiger hey, it really is an insult to our intelligence. 1. COVID issues will be worse if packed into an arena, especially an indoor one. 2. The terrorism one is a straight lie, from the report “Even though the Government and WA Police have no major concerns of terror attacks, 7News reported security consultants for the AFL feared the possibility of a terror attack”. So the AFL must be the leading counter-terrorism unit in Australia now. 3. It takes 6 months to prepare, now this one is just taking the p!ss. It’s already been prepared, they did a practice run a few weeks ago with a warship ceremony. The premier has said its ready to go, the Lord Mayor has said its ready to go. The police are ready, for once everyone in government is on the same page and wants it to happen. They were actually excited for it. Why use such pathetic lies. What is the real reason, I do not know. I imagine it would be a cash grab but if they don’t charge for tickets, as adamdilligafthompson has mentioned here, then what the hell is the reason.

loll first it was "terrorism" and now suddenly its "COVID" Probably realised “terrorism” had lost its 2000’s lustre and went with the latter, more contemporary narrative instead. Doesn’t really matter what nonsense they say, it stinks like a cash grab and I’m pretty sure everyone can see/smell that. So how about you spare us the spin and just be honest for once in your lives?
