Floreat Athena almost cause an upset in the FFA Cup round of 32

By TheSecretScout / Roar Guru

I wrote a column several weeks ago about how Floreat Athena were one of the NPL teams with the best chances of causing a cup boil-over.

For large periods of Sunday’s match against serial cup winners Adelaide United, Athena was the better team. They created enough chances to win this match.

Athena put up a valiant effort before running out of legs and succumbing to Adelaide’s pressure in extra time, losing the match 3-1.

While most A-League clubs have played multiple trial games, this was Adelaide’s first hit-out of a troubling pre-season that involved the director of football leaving and an independent inquiry into the club’s strength and conditioning program.

Several players were missing with injuries and the four off-season recruits had only been training with the squad for barely two weeks due to the strict COVID border closures for South Australia.

United hopped on the plane to Perth and 3.5 hours later got their first look at E&D Litis Stadium, which was previously a velodrome.

The players were very concerned with how spongy the pitch was due to heavy watering and the swirling winds. A cup upset seemed like it could happen.

However, United struck first when Louis D’Arrigo ghosted in towards the near post to head home a Josh Cavallo cross.

Adelaide’s new-look defence seemed uncomfortable all afternoon when Athena pressed high and were lucky to get away with only a yellow card when the error-prone George Timotheou brought down the impressive Robert Harding, who was clear through on goal.

Athena finally got a much-deserved equaliser after halftime, when the ball fell to Christopher Saldaris, who guided it home from 18 yards out. Saldaris is a rampaging right back who has scored ten goals this season.

Adelaide had a great chance to win it when Mohamed Toure rose high, but his header thumped back against the cross bar.

Athena was starting to tire heading into extra time after a long, gruelling NPL season that saw them finish second and lose the WA top-four cup 6-3 last weekend.

Ben Halloran drove towards Athena’s box and was brought down for a penalty. New interstate recruit George Blackwood dispatched it to give United a 2-1 lead.

Yaya Dukuly then put the icing on the cake with United’s third and final goal with a mazy run into the box and a shot that went through a sea of legs before the player celebrated with his trademark back flips.

For interstate viewers this was there first chance to have a look at some more of the fabled Adelaide youth production line. A trio of talented 17-year-olds made their first-team debuts.

Bernardo started the match after a great season at NPL level and did not look out of his place. He is the son of legendary A-League player Cassio and shares his father’s diminutive stature and ability to dribble past players at pace.

Adelaide have been crying out for a number ten for the better part of a decade and to finally have one so young come through the system is exciting for the club.

Ethan Alagich – the son of another iconic A-League player Richie – came off the bench, as well as Arbi Mollas. Both have been standouts at NPL level this season.

Floreat coach Vas Vujacic can be very proud of his team’s achievement in scaring a highly fancied A-League club.

When the Athena players get out of bed Monday morning, they will have to go to their jobs – some are tradies, some are students and some work in finance.

Their full-time professional opponents Adelaide United will look forward to the luxury of recovery session at the beach.

One of the best things about the FFA Cup is the possibility of A-League teams being knocked out by a team of part timers. Floreat Athena gave a good account of themselves, but we might have to wait until next round to see a cup upset.

we'll be fine once domestic transfer fees come in, they'll keep the club comfortably afloat season after season. we've probably lost out of a few million dollars over the years due to clubs (inparticular melbourne city) raiding our youth team for players

Great match report from a great cup tie. The one advantage of the restrictions is that we get to see each tie on channel ten

I was impressed with Bernardo too, he looks like an Arzani/Tilio type of player coming through with skilful and effective in 1v1 actions. Clearly there is a lot of young talent with Adelaide United, kind of reminds of of a different sport in the NRL with the Penrith Panthers whom have the best young talent but also one of the best teams in the NRL. Clearly it’s different in football given the best young players go overseas but Adelaide could be sitting in a healthy position in the long term not only for success in the aleague but also to capitalise in the transfer market.

tricky position to be in, especially with the a league scheduling dramas of the first 6 rounds. i wouldn't just give a team a free spot, its a cup competition its all about earning a place in the next rounds. This is the biggest chance for a major trophy outside of the league, so clubs should respect it and not want easy passage the cup must go on thats all i know, if nsw/vic teams have to play midweek games to catch up (which im assuming they will have to) - so be it.

This was Stan the Mans second club, and the first club was greek as well , and unlike South produced the goods. Who was it thought Perth didnt have ethnic clubs that popped up in the 50's like everywhere else. Little I saw of bernado looks good. Blackwood doesn't look to have improved they need to give all the players they have with potential not bring him back. You have slow and old midfielders and defenders that kind of goal could become a regular occurence. Is that Tratt the central defender that looks very slow and clumsy.

I tend to agree. I do think some of the decisions favoured Adelaide but then we enter the realm of what ifs, on the balance it was Adelaide's game. Thanks for the write up. Good to be talking football again!

ref was consistent, thats the main thing. both teams could've had a player sent off for pulling down the last man when they where clear through on goals. it was a super niggly game and tacking wasn't outrageous by any means. athena gave as good as they got and like i said, as long as the ref is consistent (which he was) in fouls and cards given theres not too much to complain about. for all of adelaides possession and shots, athena looked the more likely to find the winner after toure clattered the bar. as you saw, the gulf between the NPL and a league is still massive (especially fitness wise) athena had just finished there season, but they were the team struggling with fitness towards the end against a patchwork quilt of an adelaide team that has only been pre season training for a few weeks and played no trial games yet

Good summary, a good game to watch with Athena a chance till late to cause an upset. Mind you AA, if that was Sydney FC instead of Adelaide winning like that you'd have plenty of east coast biased ranting about the refereeing which heavily favoured Adelaide. They got away with a lot of spiteful, petty challenges and look to again be the most diving-est team in the ALeague. I thought a couple of the Athena players would be worth an ALeague trial, McManus in particular.

wouldnt read too much into it honestly. once you factor in all the things i said, it was a solid hit out both teams could've been reduced to 10 men as well

Agreed as I would rather see a mini match. However you still need to convert 70% possession or at least fire some shots on target.

How good was the hill behind the goals, where you can catch some shade under a tree while watching the game. What a pity we couldn't see an early upset in the cup.

good little player, he wont see much game time this season as the forward line is incredibly strong it's just an opportunity to experience the levels required to play at a league level, his best chances will be in 22/23 when all 3 toures and yengi head to europe

I was looking forward to seeing Adelaide's youth. As you've explained, there were reasons why they weren't at their best. I'd love to see Bernardo do well, as well as the others, but what about the new 15 year old, Irankunda? What's your prediction?

Maybe Paramount do a poor highlight reel and since there is no mini match i cant speak for anything other than that there were no shots on goal by adeliade. They won in extra time as they played part time players that work through the week so obviously they have more fitness. But if that's any indicator of their upcoming season than they won't be in finals. Hopefully its just a pre season thing.
