Crows make decision on Walker's future

Adelaide list manager Justin Reid has declared disgraced former captain Taylor Walker will remain at the AFL club next season.

Walker, who is contracted for 2022, had been contemplating his future in the wake of the racism scandal that resulted in him being suspended for six matches.

The Crows have condemned Walker’s racial slur against a SANFL player while still supporting the veteran forward.

Earlier this month, coach Matthew Nicks said he “really” wants Adelaide’s all-time leading goal-kicker to play on next year.

Reid said the club now expects that to be the case.

“It certainly wasn’t the greatest ending (to the season) and is something we need to work through as a club,” Reid told Trade Radio on Wednesday.

“We’ll continue to support not just Tex (Walker) but the whole playing group and the wider community, and I know that’s something Tex is really focused in on.

“He’s someone I check in on on a fortnightly basis and he’ll be playing at the Adelaide Football Club next year.”

After a poor 2020 campaign almost forced Walker retirement, he enjoyed a stunning return to form with 48 goals in 17 matches this year.

But the 31-year-old key forward’s season came to an early end in August when his racial slur against North Adelaide player Robbie Young came to light.

An AFL investigation led to the six-match ban and an “ashamed, embarrassed and remorseful” Walker apologised to Young.

Walker will serve the remaining three matches of his suspension at the start of the 2022 season.

Reid expects Walker in pre-season training soon, with the Crows facing a huge summer as they attempt to climb up the ladder.

“He’s determined to get inside the four walls and go about his business,” Reid said.

“He’s about improving and so are we as a football club where we sit at the moment.

“There’s plenty of work to be done.”

Lovely Pablocruz, thanks. 'This ‘outrage’ can be extremely damaging to the quest for equality in what is primarily a white man’s world. I abhor the behaviour, not the bloke!' It's easy being virtuous about racism on social media when your virtue is never tested.

I say we ban Tex for life, and the Collingwood football club and Eddie and figjam for life too. Is there anyone else you can think of. Let's strip Diesel of his two brownlows and ooh ooh I'm so excited...

Very fair comment, Angela. I, too, doubt very much that Tex is inherently racist but the idea of that being possible seems to be lost on the sanctimonious people you speak of. As a person of color, I don't require nor need retributive justice based on hatred in any shape or form. This 'outrage' can be extremely damaging to the quest for equality in what is primarily a white man's world. I abhor the behaviour, not the bloke!

My dad’s mate had one too. Bought new in 1967. Sky blue with a white vinyl top. Probably not the most economical car on the road, but lacked nothing in personality & presence.

Fair enough but if the education doesn’t work & the spur of the moment racist comments continue to occur what is the solution Is it Faith in the new generation?

The behaviour of Taylor Walker in making a racial slur about an indigenous opponent, Robbie Young, needs to be vigorously discouraged. It definitely required Walker receiving a substantial suspension and/or financial penalty. Whether the penalty he received was enough is up for debate, but I'm not sure it should lead to a life ban. He made the slur in a quarter-time huddle to a team mate about Robbie Young, not actually to Robbie Young. The general public doesn't understand why he made this comment about Robbie Young at this moment and what was his motivation. With the incident being overheard and reported, Walker appeared remorseful. Was he sorry because he was caught and embarrassed and was facing a penalty or was he sorry because he knew he did the wrong thing and his way of thinking was wrong? Does he just have an issue with Robbie Young and was he using racial vilification as tool to express this or does he have an issue with indigenous players and people in general? If the latter, has this been a lightbulb moment and has he really changed at all? Does he intend go back to making the same old comments amongst his mates when he retires from football? Only Tex can answer this question for himself. Unfortunately, people find it hard to change on the inside overnight, even if they want to change. Improving as a person is a slow process as does the development of our opinions on certain issues. It will be difficult for Tex to be in a team with indigenous teammates when he has vilified another indigenous player over his race. It may also be uncomfortable for those indigenous players to have such a teammate if they are unconvinced by his contrition. However, it would be hard to expect that every teammate gets on with every teammate at any club. Let's remember that Tex said something that was intended to contemptuously insult another person. If people continually choose to say those things it does have ongoing negative social consequences for indigenous people that we would like to see improve sooner rather than later. However, Tex hasn't assaulted anybody or instigated violence. Should his remark prevent him from being employed in any capacity at all, even if that is in playing AFL football? When he's done his time, and he's prepared to pull himself into line, give him a chance to make it all fine. Everyone deserves a second chance, but repeated chances eventually do run out.

Fair enough Rowdy, that's to do with football and as it should be. It will be interesting to see how he plays after all the drama. Could be his swansong

Let him do his remaining three matches, then make him shave that d-bag moustache before he comes back into the team. Surely someone has told him he doesn't suit moustaches?

In a slightly different focus maybe Adelaide needs to divest themselves of Tex. He in many ways represents the Crows, good n bad, a clean break is probably needed. ——- My take is he will be dropped if he puts 3 or 4 bad games together.

Good, in many ways it will be harder for him to come back than disappear. He's paid a big penalty for a moment's lapse - I doubt that he is inherently 'racist - and will no doubt have to put up with booing and constant reminders of his sins. Some of the over-the-top sanctimonious, abusive comments made here (under the safe cloak of anonymity) here are almost as bad.

In regards to racism the AFL need to enforce lifetime bans if found guilty but we all know they won’t be so harsh because it comes down to hear say if know one else witness it occurring on the field apart from the victim.

There is no going back after such action. If you don’t go hard on it now it will just continue. He needs to give it up and the AFL needs to enforce his lifelong ban. Nothing more to say. Racism is a disease in this sport it needs to be eradicated once and for all.

I don't agree. We have some disgraced AFL administrators who now have leadership roles at AFL clubs. We have player managers, journalists and even politicians who have "disgraced" themselves. If the offender is penitent, surely the correct response to disgrace is to offer grace.

I think Tex plays SANFL next year. It will be could for the kids to practice kicking it to someone who actually knows what to do.
