Western United forced out of Lakeside by South Melbourne

Eight days after South Melbourne said they would vigorously oppose Western United’s plan to play at Lakeside Stadium, the A-League Men team opts for AAMI Park.

South Melbourne’s bid to keep Western United out of Lakeside Stadium has succeeded, with the A-League Men club dropping plans to play games at the venue in the upcoming season.

Last Thursday, United announced plans to play seven home games at Lakeside in 2021-2022 – including two in the first six rounds.

Hours later, long-term tenants and former NSL powerhouse South Melbourne, who now play in Victoria’s NPL, vowed to exercise “all rights” to prevent that from happening.

On Friday, the A-Leagues confirmed United – who plan to turn soil on their stadium site in Tarneit later this month – will instead play those games at AAMI Park.

“The two Western United games originally scheduled at Melbourne’s Lakeside Stadium will now be played at AAMI Park,” A-Leagues commissioner Greg O’Rourke said.

“Matches that were originally intended to be scheduled at Lakeside for the remainder of the 2021-22 season will also now be played at AAMI Park.

“This decision has been made following a continued consultation process between the A-Leagues, state government, Western United FC and South Melbourne FC.

“With a small number of rectangular stadiums available in Melbourne that meet the standards for an A-Leagues broadcast, and the delayed start to the season as a result of COVID restrictions further limiting the available options, this is the most suitable interim solution as Western United work towards delivering their home stadium in Melbourne’s west.”

South Melbourne, who have previously missed out on an A-League licence – including when United received theirs in 2018 – had insisted Lakeside Stadium had no signed agreement in place with United or the Australian Professional Leagues (A-Leagues).

“We welcome the outcome in this matter and acknowledge the consultative approach to bring this issue to a suitable conclusion”, South Melbourne president Nicholas Maikousis said.

AAMI Park will be United’s fourth home venue this season along with GMHBA Stadium, Mars Stadium and UTAS Stadium.

“Following the A-Leagues’ due diligence process, we had agreed dates and entered into the contract process with the State Sports Centres Trust to play the games published in last week’s fixture announcements for the 2021-22 season,” United chief executive Chris Pehlivanis said.

“Having undertaken further consultation and collaboration with State Sports Centres Trust, South Melbourne FC, and the A-Leagues, the decision has been made to replace Lakeside Stadium with AAMI Park on our home stadium schedule for the 2021-22 season.”

Yeah how many afl training facilities are there yet football and rugby have to share one stadium? Victory dont have a training facility. And WU claim a lot of things but don't have a training facility either and look like they will be playing out of AAMI for a long time to come. #foreverwest/aamilikeallaleague

So why would South need to showcase its venue when you yourself admit they will never be under serious consideration? Your bias against South is ridiculous, you do realise WU went behind Souths back and didnt tell them the night before going public that they were planning to use Lakeside, are you ok with that? Sounds disgustingly unprofessional to me. Melbourne Victory women and youth teams have been allowed to use Lakeside because they deal with South in a professional, unlike those western cowboys.

I dont know that much about the 1995 move, South Melbourne if they contributed money on that occasion then they deserve credit for that, however South Melbourne struck the jackpot winning the league in 99 , can you explain why a club thats going to the biggest club football occasion in Australian club football history goes cheap on their squad when they get a 4.2 million cheque from FIFA into their bank account in 1999 on top of everything else. How come MV only raised 2 million to get into the A-league, if South Melbourne had put that money into a bank account it would have been 5 milllion by 2005. Wollongong had to play even more matches in the expanded Oceania club championship, everyone was interested in a shot at the money, and the Club World cup was cancelled. Other NSL clubs other NPL clubs all have done the job without any of this good fortune and handouts. South hardly dominated the NPL until they started getting the LAkeside money, they have been around the top but whats happened since 2017. Are South going to be still in the top level when the money runs out. South whine a lot they deserve to be in the top level if there are 8 NPL clubs above them why dont we hear about them. Western United I would assume these games would be including a few derbies so quite a lot of dollars to be made only a fool would pass it up.

South’s have come across as petty, arrogant snd foolish. There is no “showcase” when they play City - the APL won’t be looking at them for expansion anytime soon. They just won’t.

Northern Spirit was massively stupid with the stadium situation. They paid the full cost of drop in wickets at North Sydney Oval to cater for suburban cricket . That meant they were bleeding money like anything. The illusion of success was built on giving away free tickets to start with and spending big on promotion. Their old player policy they were the first NSL club to do the ex Socceroo junket with Arnold and Slater returning, but then in a twist seeing the crowds Arnold and Slater both invested in a club not being told it was massively in debt. North Sydney bled them dry and the other stadiums were too far out of the way on the Northern beaches. Anyonhe advocating North Sydney Oval for a team for starters needs to get their head checked, while North Sydney council paid for CCM to play on the cricket pitch for a few games with ulterior motives your seriously off your head if you think they wont screw any A-league club to the max if they lock in North Sydney Oval. People here completely lacking the slightest piece of financial reality. They think money grows on trees and you can just click your fingers and get a stadium. Lets blame Western United that the Vic government and councils in Victoria have spent a billion on AFL training facilities and grounds and there is only one decent rectangular stadium in the state.

1) South was told 3 years ago that Lakeside was inadequate, just because WU were suddenly desperate it doesnt mean South should roll out the red carpet 2) WU have already made fools of themselves. South will showcase Lakeside when they host Melbourne City in the ffa cup next month.

South were forced from their original home to make way for the grand prix, they then matched the government dollar for dollar in building the original lakeside, to say they've received nothing but bailouts shows you have absolutely no idea. As for on field South have been one of the most succesful clubs in Victoria post nsl winning 3 grand finals and multiple cup competitions. Also just because South has money it doesnt mean it all goes into the senior mens team, when South have spent big on its squad they've dominated as they did from 2014-2017. Since then they've scaled back a bit. Melbourne Victory have lots of money and were losing games by 7 goals last yr, money doesnt guarantee anything. South was not going to get a truckload of money with Westerns 500 supporters. South will get its truckload of money when it hosts melbourne city in the ffa cup in November.

Northern Spirit were a massive success in the first couple of years, but then sadly, the former NSL club took a dive (I don’t know the full details). I think Sydney FC have dibs on that area, possibly up to Hornsby. Any further north, & it’s Mariner’s territory.

I agree that Melbourne should have never gotten a 3rd club but we have what we have now and we have to make it work as clubs cant just be kicked out anymore (Thank god for that) and Western United did bring in a lot of money ad along with Sydney, Western Sydney and Wellington they are Keeping the Jets afloat AMT

Melbourne could easily have a 4th and 5th club. Wollongong didn't show much promise when nz was playing out of there. Northern Sydney seems like a good choice for a future club though.

Even a temporary structure would need Planning Permission....which they haven't as yet applied for. https://eproperty.wyndham.vic.gov.au/ePropertyPROD/P1/eTrack/eTrackApplicationSearchResults.aspx?r=P1.WEBGUEST&f=$P1.ETR.RESULTS.VIW At the moment they have permission for some earthworks and a roadside sign.

Western United(wherever that is?) was supposed to build their own stadium. There are already two clubs in the city, we don't need a third. I have seen circus stadiums go up in 3 days, just build a temporary stadium. They only get 3 or 4k into games as it is, they do not need much. Or, it is time to tear up their license and give it to Wollongong or Northern Sydney.

By all accounts WU were just using this to get to AAMI Park. They apparently had little intent to use Lakeside.

Curious headline. You can't be forced out of a place you were never in, in the first place.

South’s just didn’t need this drama. This was a perfect opportunity to: (a) showcase their home ground as an A League venue (b) highlight just how inadequate WU are.

Let the A-League feud begin! South Melbourne are tragically reminding me of the ABC - sour grapes from two institutions in decline. Football is on the rise in Australia, & it doesn’t need such leaching establishments, desperate for relevance.

Beyond laughable by the biggest joke of a club in Australian history South. South as a result of a merger with Melbourne Haokoah ended up with control of Middle Stadium, and when the grand prix came along they got their first government bailout and government paid for stadium which led to their second bailout and second government paid for stadium. Despite all this money they cant even challenge for the Victorian NPL title. Western United try to play at AAMI thats blocked, South then in line to get a whole truckload of money with the move to Lakeside. Then Western United use Souths stupidity to get back into AAMI. Yes they were really desperate to play at Lakeside.
