UPDATE: Pies stand De Goey down following New York arrest

By Oliver Caffrey / Wire

Collingwood star Jordan De Goey’s AFL future hangs in the balance after the Magpies announced he will be stood down indefinitely.

The 25-year old was released from custody in the United States following an alleged incident at a Halloween-themed nightclub party in New York.

De Goey pleaded not guilty to the charges and is not due to face court again until December 8, after senior Magpies players are expected back at the club for pre-season training.

In a statement, the Magpies said the decision to stand De Goey down is the appropriate punishment, with the club ‘deeply disappointed’ in his actions.

“The club will continue to pay De Goey under the terms of his contract until such time as an outcome to proceedings against him in the United States is reached or a more complete account of events is established,” the statement reads.

“In the interim, De Goey will not be permitted to train or play with Collingwood or make use of club resources, staff or facilities.

“Collingwood is deeply disappointed by reports and events of the last 48 hours involving De Goey in the US. Given the circumstances, the club believes it is appropriate to remove him from the AFL program.

“Collingwood has been in contact with De Goey and his management today and has explained to both its decision.”

According to the New York Daily News, De Goey was partying with his friend Luke Dyson on Saturday at the PHD Rooftop Lounge, only hours after he arrived in New York from California, when the pair are alleged to have approached a woman on the dance floor.

The woman’s friend then confronted the pair, before Dyson allegedly struck the man in the face with a glass bottle, and splitting his lip, New York police said.

Police say the woman called 911 and De Goey and Dyson were taken into custody, before being charged with forcible touching and assault.

The Magpies released a brief statement on Sunday about their 25-year-old game-breaker, who finished fourth in the club’s best-and-fairest this year.

“Collingwood is aware of a report involving Jordan De Goey,” he statement read.

“The club is attempting to contact Jordan, who is in the USA, to determine the facts of the matter.

“The club will not be in a position to comment further until it has done so.”

Dyson posted several videos with De Goey on his Instagram page before the alleged incident.

The pair wore only bathrobes to the Halloween-themed party, joking they did not have an outfit.

They were filmed shirtless posing for the camera, with Dyson pretending to down a large bottle of vodka.

De Goey travelled to America during the off-season to undergo an intensive fitness program as W Training Facility in California as he attempted to capitalise on an outstanding end to the 2021 season.

Only last week, De Goey gave several interviews saying he drew inspiration from Christian Petracca after the Melbourne star’s Norm Smith medal-winning performance in the Demons’ drought-breaking premiership.

De Goey was allowed to leave Australia under a permit due to his sponsorship with Monster Energy.

The explosive midfielder-forward is out of contract at the end of next season and was setting himself for a new career-making contract.

In August, Victoria Police had to pay legal costs to De Goey after dropping a historic indecent assault charge against him.

De Goey has played 118 games and kicked 155 goals for the Magpies after debuting in 2015.

The AFL said it is aware of the allegations made against De Goey.

“The AFL integrity department will look into the matter once more information is obtained, until then the AFL is not in a position to make comment,” a statement read.

The Pies play Grand Finals this century Macca at the rate Carlton collect wooden spoons. At least our list management this century gets us to the highest level. Maybe wait until Carlton actually do something this century before critiquing other clubs who push the boundaries of their list for contending and playing finals.

Yeah wearing shorts, joggers and a bathrobe at night - it's almost a crime against humanity. And everyone being p!ssed up at a nightclub in the early morning on Halloween is almost unheard of these days. I'm sure any democratic judicial system would be heeding your advice.

"He’s entitled to a fair trial ..." I read here. Not after appearing in public at night in his shorts, joggers and hotel room bathrobe and jerking about like he has just been shot he's not! He's also got some seriously exceptional jaw hinging happening there, to be able to open his dopey gob that wide!

Well, normally i would agree and he is innocent until proven guilty....In Oz, players can be set up, but in New York where no one knows who he is, he still ended up arrested with charges of sexual harrassment/touching a female and assault, so i would be surprised if there was not some validity to it all.

Dear Alicia Keys, There are some things you cant do in New York. The song will have to be amended for Collingwood players, they are too literal.

That’s a great example of an individual redeeming himself then Thom & as you are suggesting everyone should get an opportunity to correct their wrongs if caught out but the way the AFL look at these conundrums puzzles me they seem to have image issues rather than looking at the broader picture of layers of responsible behaviour and that is more of a concern but time will tell how they react!

Matt Lodge came back to Australia and did a lot of work talking to kids about his mistakes. That kind of community work helped redeem him. He also had a baby, which made the NRL consider his rights to play to earn a living. jDG May look gone, but he has a way back if he is man enough to face the consequences and give up his contract. Getting out of Collingwood and convincing another team to give him a chance would be a way back.

Showing my age I know, but I can remember a time when no Australian footy players of any code were ever under arrest in New York. Simple times, but I miss them.

No, I just have different opinions and a different outlook on the world. I don’t do labels to tar whole groups with the same brush. But each to their own. I see you still can’t have a debate without having a crack at the other person.

Do you know about the case of Matt Lodge? He had serious issues and his assault on an American couple was atrocious. However, he has spent time redeeming himself and the NRL allowed him to be registered again so he could pay off the victim compo.
