'Appalling': Cricket Tas says CA's Paine treatment worst since Lawry was sacked 50 years ago

By Troy Whittaker / Editor

Cricket Tasmania has blasted Cricket Australia for its “appalling” lack of support for Tim Paine – declaring no Test captain has copped worse treatment by the governing body “since Bill Lawry over 50 years ago”.

In a fiery statement released on Tuesday, Cricket Tasmania (CT) reiterated its backing of Paine in no uncertain terms despite his sudden resignation as Test skipper last Friday after a 2017 sexting incident became public.

The CT board met on Monday – the same day Paine returned to the field for Tasmania’s Second XI team and took six catches against South Australia – where it “unanimously expressed its continuing support of Tim Paine and condemnation of his treatment by Cricket Australia”.

“In conversations I have had in recent days it is clear that the anger amongst the Tasmanian cricket community and general public is palpable,” CT chairman Andrew Gaggin said.

“Tim Paine has been a beacon for Australian cricket over the past four years and instrumental in salvaging the reputation of the national team after the calamity of Cape Town.

“Yet, at a time when CA should have supported Tim, he was evidently regarded as dispensable. The treatment afforded to the Australian Test captain by Cricket Australia has been appalling, and the worst since Bill Lawry over 50 years ago.”

Lawry infamously became the first and only Australian Test captain to be sacked during a series when he was axed in the 1970-71 Ashes after a period of tension with the board.

The news was relayed to Lawry via a radio report.

In Gaggins’ view, Cricket Australia (CA) owed Paine more after he guided the Test team out of the despair of the sandpaper scandal.

While CT and CA investigations cleared Paine of breaching their codes of conduct, CA chair Richard Freudenstein has admitted the wicketkeeper should not have been allowed to continue as Test skipper when a complaint was made in mid-2018.

“Based on the facts as they are today the board of Cricket Australia would not have made that decision,” Freudenstein said.

“I acknowledge the decision clearly sent the wrong message that this behaviour is acceptable and without serious consequences.

“The role of Australian cricket captain must be held to the highest standards.”

But CT believes Paine should have stayed in the role.

“The Cricket Tasmania Board reaffirmed its view that Paine should not have been put in a position where he felt the need to resign over an incident that was determined by an independent inquiry at the time to not be a breach of the Code of Conduct and was a consensual and private exchange that occurred between two mature adults and was not repeated,” Gaggin said.

CT isn’t alone in its unequivocal support of Paine. The Australian Cricketers’ Association expressed similar sentiments in a statement last week.

“While respecting the decision made by Tim Paine, the ACA is saddened that he felt the need to resign from the captaincy of the Australian Test team,” an ACA statement read.

“While regrettable, this was an historical mistake that was a private matter between consenting individuals. Tim fully cooperated in an integrity investigation by Cricket Australia in 2018 in which he was exonerated.

Sports opinion delivered daily

“Tim humbly recognised the respect that comes with the Australian captaincy and his resignation reflects the esteem in which he held the role that he served so well in a trying period for Australian cricket.

“Tim’s captaincy has been regarded throughout the cricket world as playing a crucial role in restoring pride back in the Australian team, both in their performance and the spirit in which they play the game.

“While Tim has clearly made a mistake, he will continue to have the full and unequivocal support of the ACA.”

Other than trying to support Paine when they feel that CA haven't? I don't really get your reasoning here.

There are inconsistencies. No need to say anything

I don't understand what you mean by "this is still no reason to say what they did". If their finding was that the exchange was consensual then of course they would stick with that line. Why wouldn't they? If they found that it wasn't consensual then they could hardly have cleared Paine.

Inglis. Inglis has been at the T20 WC, which is why he has missed Shield games. Philippe is the best bat of the 3 I think, but Inglis is also a very good bat but the superior keeper. Inglis keeps when they play together for WA. Carey has gone off the boil a little with the bat and from what I can gather, Inglis is a better keeper too.

Jameswm, Looking at the SS stats, the outstanding candidate is Philippe. His WA team mate Inglis, who I've seen mentioned here on The Roar has just one game to date, while Carey is averaging under 30. Carey has been the front runner to replace Paine, while I know next to nothing about the WA pair. Your thoughts?

I'm not so sure about that 2nd point. I don't know what they looked at or what decision they came to, but this is still no reason to say what they did. There is no need.

While there may still be questions around consent, it's not particularly relevant to this issue of CA's support (or lack thereof) for Paine, for two reasons. Firstly, the original complaint was investigated and dismissed. That alone doesn't mean it wasn't valid or that it was in fact investigated properly. However, unless and until the woman choses to raise it again, it has to be considered dealt with. We can speculate all we want but the fact remains that there is no current complaint against Paine. Secondly, CA themselves determined that the conduct was consensual, and that it didn't justify his subsequent removal from the position of captain. They can't now throw him under a bus and get all high and mighty about it. Either they considered the matter dealt with or they didn't; they can't have their cake and eat it too. During Paine's time as captain and player he generally conducted himself well, and was endorsed in the role by CA despite knowledge of this past incident. He deserves CA's ongoing support but they are too busy trying to distance themselves from their own mess.

Or made on supporting your mate, or feeling sorry for Paine. It is one question - which person, batting at 7 and keeping, gives us the best chance of winning the first test? And I can't see how the answer is Tim Paine. He is also coming back from injury and has very little cricket under his belt, not to mention what a distraction he would be.

I'm going to remove the emotion & try to look at the Tim Paine situation sensibly. Which seems to have become increasingly impossible. Tim Paine sending a photo of his genitalia to a woman who wasn't his wife (you wouldn't even do that to your wife, would you?) was behaviour totally unworthy of a sporting test captain. Paine did the wrong thing, even if he acknowledges it was a momentary lack of judgement. He immediately confessed to his wife, who was forgiving. So at least he had the self awareness of his actions. Women are overly resentful of egotisitical men sending them photos of their genitalia, as if they're going to be impressed by that. It's only men who are obsessed with the size of their other member. Once it became obvious the exchange of sexting was to become public, Paine at least had the decency of mind to understand his test captaincy was no longer tenable. So his resigning the post was the honourable thing to do. As for those who say the previous CA board forgave Paine & swept the matter under the carpet because they didn't want another captaincy crisis so soon, you are absolutely right. There's a line from one of those British historical war movies, it might have been Khartoum, where one of the pollies opines that the public can only handle reading one disaster at a time in the morning papers with their breakfast. So it was with sexting-gate happening so soon after sandpaper- gate. We can argue on the rights & wrongs of the CA board at the time. But I think if I had been a CA board member then, I would have concurred with the course of action. Had the matter remained private, none of us would have been any wiser. I wonder how many test captains from the past may have done something equal to, or worse than Paine, but thanks to no social media back then, their behaviour never became public knowledge. We all have different values of ethics, of what we consider allowable or not. I'm sure most of us would agree that a test captain cheating on his wife & losing his marriage is a personal matter that should remain with the parties concerned. I'm also sure most of us would agree that a man bashing his wife or partner is simply not acceptable under any circumstances. Beyond that, we have our own ethical values of what we consider okay or not. Generally speaking, most of us will treat others in the same way we would like to be treated ourselves. That is, with respect, consideration & dignity. Any good leader must be capable of this. Furthermore, the sign of good character is doing the right thing when no-one is watching, or there's no personal gain involved. You do the right thing because it is the right thing to do. A simple act like keeping your rubbish in the car until you find a rubbish bin, & not tossing it out on the road or in the bush. That's character. Paine has resigned, which he should have done, & did. As for the current CA board, they should have just shut up. Their virtue signalling & holier than thou (to the previous board) has only inflamed the situation. I'm not quite sure what CT is on about. Paine's resignation was accepted, which is what should have happened. Paine hasn't been cut from the test team yet, but having lost the captaincy, his position is no longer ironclad. Last summer against India, Paine lost the plot both as captain & wicket keeper. He dropped something like 6-7 catches, which was unusual for him. And his batting fell away, especially in the middle stages. Had he remained captain, this summer would have been seminal for his future. He would have needed an exceptional series to hang onto both the captaincy & keeping. But now without the backstop of captaincy, Paine must be judged on his keeping & batting alone, & at present it's not particularly good. It won't surprise me one way or the other, If Paine is retained or dumped. But whichever way the selectors go, I hope the choice is made on form & not politics.

CT, CA and Tim Paine are just a bunch of jokers. Who would have thought that such horrendous behaviour can be condoned by any normal person. The sexting entire exchange scandal is below any ethical standards of any organisation. we continue to discuss and support Tim Paine and the whole saga. Atrocious. Bring in a new captain, Axe tim Paine for poor behaviour and let the message be clear to all that CA will not tolerate any unethical behaviour.
