Has England won the international bidding war for the son of Wallabies legend?

By News / Wire

Louis Lynagh is back in with a chance of making his debut for England after being added to their squad as cover for their opening match against Scotland in the Six Nations.

Lynagh, son of former Wallabies World Cup winner Michael, was drafted in to Eddie Jones’ squad on Sunday after another setback for England with Joe Marchant testing positive for COVID-19.

Marchant’s case was confirmed by lateral flow and PCR tests on Friday and he will miss at least the start of the training week at the squad’s base in Surrey.

The versatile Harlequins back Marchant, who covers outside centre and wing, was set to feature at Murrayfield on Saturday as England contend with a lengthy injury list.

Now, though, his Quins’ teammate Lynagh, who has been in prolific try-scoring form at club level, has been brought in by Jones, who has sung his praises after a previous spell in the squad.

Lynagh has also sparked interest from both Australia and Italy – he is eligible for the Azzurri because his mother is Italian – but England appear to be in the driver’s seat in this international race.

Another winger, Newcastle’s Adam Radwan, has also been added to the squad.

Prop Joe Marler also remains in self-isolation because of coronavirus.

Northampton back Tommy Freeman has been ruled out by a hamstring injury, but he was unlikely to play any part against Scotland.

Courtney Lawes remains a doubt as he continues to recover from the concussion sustained for Northampton against Ulster earlier in the month and Nick Isiekwe is to stay with England for the week as cover.

Having lost Owen Farrell to ankle surgery for the entire Championship, Jones will be hoping that Lawes recovers with the Lions flanker likely to deputise as captain.

England also have fitness concerns of varying degrees over wings Jonny May and Anthony Watson, centres Manu Tuilagi and Henry Slade, lock Jonny Hill and flanker Sam Underhill.

On the other hand, do you want to deprive Fijians of being able to earn the sort of income that makes a massive difference to their families in Fiji? Hopefully the new Pacific SR enables both, and World Rugby start giving Tier 2 teams a lot more test match exposure so they can become Tier 1 as well. Players will do what they need to do, and play for whom they want. I think LL wants to play for England, and this is just media hype.

Probably the ideal outcome for Michael. There will be more pressure on Tom I guess. Maybe the third will be off to Italy, that will be one for the record books.

Harry Potter and Curtis Rona is who we should be talking about. Potter is lighting it up for Leicester and Rona has been Irish’s best player for past two years.

He’s defensively an absolute liability. Did you see his game against Castres? I was there, he bit twice on the wing got exposed and they scored two tries on him, nearly a 3rd. England welcome to him.

I attend Quins most games, Louis’ defence is shocking. Great attacker but a poor tackler and defensively misses the read often.

Plenty of high quality depth at wing with the likes of Dungunu, Vunivalu, Kellaway, Perese, Petaia, Tom Wright, Muirhead, the list goes on... Even the next generation of up and comers have the potential to go to the next level... guys like Lachie Anderson, Dylan Pietsch, James Ramm, llaisa Droasese. Not to mention that they could still pick Korobeite if they wanted to. No doubt Lynagh is quality but there is more than ample talent here to cove that slot.

There was no bidding war. Louis has had his eyes set on England for a long time.

"The question is for Lynagh himself, does he want to be capped by England for one game and only just as cover but then find himself not being selected again when everyone is fit and even miss out on world rugby selection when he can get that with the Wallabies and certain guarantee with Italy" Fair question, Chris. But my firm belief is that Louis is a top class player who will mature into an England regular and win multiple caps.....injury not intervening, ofc. There are elements of his game already that suggest he is a very innovative player who can take the half chance, can create a lot out of little.

Not disagreeing, but Lomax etc were certainly born in Australia, did you not read where I suggested where you were born or reside? I not talking of the Lynagh boys only, but I do think at the moment where a player can be eligible up to about 7-8 counties in the extreme is ridiculous, even if you just had parent rule you can chose between up to 4 countries because you ‘feel’part of that country, even if you have never lived in a couple of them. Just seems a little wrong to me.

Danny, I know you’re not trying to start a discussion, and I mostly agree with you, but there is an extra dimension and that is what a player feels, as you have already stated, and it may not coincide with where they were born or where they live. Clearly Louis feels for England while Tom feels for Australia. It would be unfair to deny Tom the opportunity to play for Australia if that’s what he feels – perhaps it’s because he has a very close relationship with his Dad. Of course the difficulty is in determining whether a player is genuinely talking from their feelings or just faking it to go where it is easy. There are many examples of the latter but there are a few All Blacks who were born in Australia (e.g. Tyrel Lomax who even played for AusU20) but have chosen to go with the ABs rather than the Wallabies – they are definitely not going where it is easy. In other words, it’s a complicated issue, particularly considering there are more fake than genuine feelings out there.

Yep and obviously he just feels English and doesn't want to maybe go where it is easy. I personally happy as I still one of the ones who believe you play for where you reside ,or were born. I not into ancestors making you eligible. And I understand that is what it is, and not trying to start a discussion on it, just what I feel.

I'm sorry I dont agree with you Bobby because hes already proven at Premiership level and European level and at the moment that level is higher than super rugby sides, certainly not the Aussie sides maybe the Kiwi sides who are all very competitive. Besides he is playing at Quins who are Premier champions and also won all their European games so far and these European games are sometimes like test rugby, so he is already proven at a higher level than super rugby that's for sure. The question is for Lynagh himself, does he want to be capped by England for one game and only just as cover but then find himself not being selected again when everyone is fit and even miss out on world rugby selection when he can get that with the Wallabies and certain guarantee with Italy.

Absolutely. Get the impression that Louis and Tom are very different personality-wise and will do better in separate systems. And then there’s the third boy, who may or not have inherited the Lynagh rugby genes.

Fair enough though I struggle with players growing up and coming through a country’s systems only to be stolen via a technicality. We’ve deprived Fiji of selecting the cream of their talent on the wing for years. We shouldn’t be chasing English wingers too.

I think it is all newspaper hype, he is on the English pathway, on purpose. Tom is at the Reds, also on purpose. Louis seems set and I hope Tom gets to achieve his dream too.
