Eagles urge fans to stick by the AFL club

By News / Wire

West Coast coach Adam Simpson has implored fans to stick by the club during its year of pain.

The Eagles slumped to their fifth straight loss on Sunday when they suffered a 74-point loss to Melbourne at Optus Stadium.

West Coast’s average losing margin across that stretch is 81 points, with Simpson struggling to field a side each week due to injuries and COVID-19.

A crowd of just 27,488 fans turned up for Sunday’s defeat to Melbourne.

The Eagles consistently attracted crowds of more than 50,000 when they moved into Optus Stadium in 2018.

A combination of WA’s COVID-19 outbreak and train problems meant Sunday’s crowd was even lower than expected.

But the team’s horror poor form has played the biggest part in the huge drop in crowds.

“One thing I do know is we’ve had some really good periods as a footy club and we’re coming out of a really good era,” Simpson said.

“I really hope our fans stick by us in challenging times. We really appreciate their support. I know it’s been disappointing so far this year, but we like their support, we appreciate the crowds.”

The Eagles are set to be boosted by the return of captain Luke Shuey for Sunday’s clash with GWS.

Shannon Hurn, Josh Kennedy, and Andrew Gaff could also return, but Elliot Yeo (concussion/protocols) is set to be given a stint in the WAFL to build up fitness and form.

Star goalsneak Liam Ryan (hamstring) and Luke Foley (concussion) will miss at least a week.

The Eagles were missing 11 of their best 22 players against Melbourne, and Simpson saw some positives in the defeat.

“We’re obviously looking to play some youth, get to the draft, and looking for a new identity as a club in terms of the way we want to play,” Simpson said.

“All those things make it challenging when you don’t have your best team on the track.

“We want to be better, we want to score more, we want supply and we want a style of play that stands up.

“But it is a challenge to try and give you that with what we’ve got in front of us.

“We’re trying to be as positive as we can and pragmatic.”

Everyone wants Adam Simpson head however the first to go should be the fitness coaches. Our injury list is pathetic and has been for a couple of years. Simmo deserves to coach and have the opportunity to get this club back playing good footy till 2023. If we don't improve, then I agree Simmo must go. Our injury list is the main reason where we are today and covid caused the perfect storm.

It's a delicate balance though. You can't go too overboard with the clean out because that can lead to more pain than gain. Melbourne tried that in 2007 and look how long it took to get back. Some of the old heads need to be kept around for on field leadership but you're right there is a lot of fat to be trimmed.

Get a new coach and a new direction and they won’t be down for long.

The Eagles are transitioning to a modern system/brand of football. Most of their current list were chosen because they suited the old system, which was based on aerial supremacy. Many of the so called A-grade midfielders on the list are too slow for the modern style, and you can't teach an old dog new tricks. Even though the Eagles lost against Melbourne, already there are signs of improvement - a lot more pressure and moving the ball through the corridor quickly and away from congestion. Where they are falling short is how to enter and score in the forward 50 and how to move quickly out of defense, but these elements will come. If I were the coaches, I'd move on Shuey, Sheed, Gaff, Hurn, Kennedy, Rotham, Natinui, Rioli, Witherden, Cripps at the end of this season and spend 2023 and 2024 preparing for a run at the flag in 2025. As a priority I'd be looking for replacments for Natinui, Kennedy, Cripps, Gaff and Shuey.

Well said. As a 25+ year member, I will go and watch the team whether they are first or last and will never change my team. However, there is no plan - we beat Collingwood with a bunch of new players then we drop them? We bring back half fit players with reputations and they don't put in 100% and we lose by big margins. It is not good enough and the coaching staff and management need to be held to account.

I agree with you in a sense , but.. my biggest fear is they will trade top draft picks for players from other clubs. Thats the reason the Fockers were in the wilderness for so long, they traded out picks that would have netted them guys like Andrew McLoud and a few others. We cant afford to do that. Lets get the next Judd, the next Cousins and Kerr, the next Mainwaring, Sumich, etc etc. Take the pain, get the draft picks,re- build the side is what the must do. Its going to be three difficult years at least, lets commit to a youth policy, get games into young players then go again. The sooner we take our medicine the sooner we will be back on the road to recovery. Back to your point, nobody would have believed in 1980 that the Tigers wouldnt win another flag for 37 years, they won the flag by a record margin and looked for all intents and purposes like they would dominate for a decade. Same thing happened to Melbourne in the 1960's and Essendon in the 80's. 5 years, ten years, then 20. It will happen unless we commit to changing course. The longer Simmo stays, the longer we will be in the doldrums. So, administration need to make some tough calls.... even consider getting Paul Roos in .. we need a fresh set of eyes IMO. First tough call , unfortunately starts with the coach. Hes got to go.

Can guarantee you 1 thing and that is we will not be spending 37 years in the wilderness. A few years maybe but WCE don't fail for too long we will be back in contention but it will take some hard years in-between. I agree massive clean out needed end of year to start the rebuild rolling.

''missing 11 of their best 22'' Thats the same 22 who didnt make finals last year, so that argument is a cope. WA fans know when someone is taking the piss. Adam Simpson hasnt got a clue, his press conferences have become topics for drinking games, ergo you scull a beer everytime he throws out some meaningless line like ''tonight we didnt have synergy''. The players are overpaid Prima donnas in a number of case, in others, at least three of them need to be retired immediately, and the game plan (what plan??) is a joke with our much vaunted defense, now the laughing stock of the league. You would have more luck filling a bucket of water with a sieve than west coast do of stopping the opposition walking in goals. This is the heart of the fans disenchantment. Nothing is more infuriating than watching the opposition walking in scoring goals unopposed. That happens every week with the Eagles because the ZONE defense they employ does not f$cking work!! and EVERYONE knows it!! Everyone except the gaggle of clowns who are our coaching staff apparently. Old players who are out of shape, a defensive game plan about as effective as a cloth mask against Covid.. Jeez, why would people pay hard earned money to watch something that you know is not going to be a contest? Thats all the fans want.. a contest, an honest effort. Guys like Conner West always have a crack, get more guys like that. If they want the fans to come back, the coach needs to go immediately, 1/3 of the side need to be retired or delisted yesterday and we start again with a ''youth at all costs policy '' for next three years. Bitter pill... but theres no escaping it now. This squad had run their race by 2020 if we are honest and the rebuild should have already started. The fact Simmo cant see that means he is not the man to take us forward. And if Trevor Nisbett cant see that them him and all the clowns he brought in like Vozzo, they need to go as well. Pretty clear now that Don Pyke gets the credit for 2015 and Sam Mitchell was the brains behind the 2018 flag, with a squad that was put together by John Worsfold. If we dont pull our finger out of our ass, then we will be like Richmond, 37 years in the wilderness can happen in the blink of an eyelid.. thats what complacency does. WA fans arent stupid, they know it, I know it, the only ones who dont are the current administration. Collingwood had a clean out, why dont we?
