Aussies win in London to lead the World Series

By Hugh_96 / Roar Pro

The Aussie sevens men took out the London Sevens at Twickenham against long-time rivals New Zealand and are now leading the HSBC World Series standings.

The women have traditionally been the stars for Rugby Australia and in the sevens program they were the Rio Olympic Gold medalists. They recently won tournaments and a World Series title.

It must have been hard at times for the men, putting in all the effort and training but not getting the outcomes they were aiming for.

This performance by the Australian men’s sevens team is seriously outstanding.

Apart from the fact it was the first tournament win since 2018, it was also the first cup final win over New Zealand in 20 years.

As the captain Nick Malouf said, none of the current squad has ever won a tournament.

It has been an enormous turnaround by the men. Post the Olympics, the only coverage by the media was in regard to the issues on the flight back to Australia.

The other coverage more recently was about the swap in coaches. There was not a lot around the actual rugby.

So it is good to see a bit of the spotlight on the men’s program.

To see how far this team has come in the last few months, consider only six of this 13-man London squad were at the Olympics and eight were in the first Dubai tournament in December.

Also note that Henry Hutchison the second most experienced player and he got injured and did not play in any of the finals.

Compare this to the women where ten of the players from the Toulouse/ Langford tournaments played in most of the tournaments this season and were at the Olympics.

Some may ask, who is this team?

It is a bunch of quality, hard-working lads.

As the captain Malouf said, it was a tradesman-like performance.

These players just do all the basics really well. Of note is the quality of the defence, which has become outstanding.

In the past I always felt eventually the Australian defensive line would break but you do not have that feeling with this team.

Arguably the only X-factor players are the twinkle toes of Maurice Longbottom and the blinding speed of Corey Toole.

If you haven’t seen Toole’s length-of-the-field try against Canada, check it out.

A name some would know and someone who has been with the sevens then had a stint at the Rebels and is now back with the sevens program is Henry Hutchinson.

Dietrich Roache is just 20 years old. He debuted at the Olympics and is playing way above his age and currently is the World Series’ leading point scorer.

Then you have Josh Turner. I guess I would say he is a seasoned sevens player.

Henry Paterson has a magnificent moustache, and he scored three tries in the final and was player of the final. He has really stepped up.

The media love a rugby league link, so his claim to fame is that his father played for the Roosters and he tried out for the Roosters but was cut so he turned to rugby with Easts in the Shute Shield.

It will be interesting to keep an eye on youngster Ben Dowling, who is in the NSW academy system and has been selected for the Junior Wallabies.

Who are the others?

Over the last couple of tournaments, there have been a range of Shute Shield club ring-ins. In London it was Ben Marr (Warringah), Max Burey (Northern Suburbs) and Matthew Gonzalez (Eastwood).

All these players, and the others, who have been brought in have done a terrific job for the team each time.

Obviously some serious credit must also go to coach John Manenti, Chucky Standard and the coaching crew.

Check out rugby.com.au if want to read a game-by-game summary.

A couple of highlights were that the Aussies lost to New Zealand in the pool game but won in the final. The final was won in golden point.

The Australians got revenge over France in the pool. France defeated them in the quarter-final last week in Toulouse and in the quarter-final against South Africa, they were down 17-nil but came back to win 21-17.

If you get the chance, check out the final. It is well worth a watch.

A final observation is that it is interesting the men won in London and the Sydney Morning Herald did an article.

Not even the women winning tournaments this year and the overall World Series title got an article, although their successes were included in the men’s article.

In fact, it is the first rugby sevens article since December 2021 when both the men’s and women’s teams performed well in Dubai.

Yes, even Patterson said the cover tackle was the highlight, as that's what the coaches want to see. As they say deference is all about attitude so these players have the technique but also the attitude.. It is great to see a range of teams being competitive for awhile it was always Fiji, Sth Africa or NZ

Great defensive technique on both teams and also at the breakdown. Last year the women got a bit monstered by the teams with bigger players. This year early on they relied a lot of Sharni Williams to bring the necessary physical edge but in the last few tournaments a few of the younger players have imposed themselves in the contact and collisions. The older of the Levi sisters in particular - she has a devastating fend as well. Back to the men - textbook defence from them, chopping the opponents down around the legs. And stood up to the bigger players.

Excellent read Hugh. Paterson rightfully getting the plaudits - he did well to finish the match winning try but his two absolute fantastic efforts were his second try and IMO the most impressive bit, the covering tackle after full time when the NZ winger had pinned his ears back - including tackling the kiwi well enough to put him into touch. Outstanding. Roache is very good, also X-factor player. Great effort on the weekend. Another time they have been brilliant this year was in Seville where they played some incredible 7s with high quality passing (lost the final to the Saffas alas). A lot to like but its a very competitive comp with the top 10 ranked teams all genuinely capable of beating each other on the day.

There’s ALWAYS a Bradbury’s to go with our Buckley’s chance. The lucky country?

The way the captain Nick Malouf spoke after the match when asked about the next World Series stop i LA, he said they were just going to enjoy this win this evening - they deserve a night on the tiles.

It is one of the issues I have noticed for both the women & men, they are not the biggest but they are defending/ tackling brilliantly. No idea who is responsible but their technique across the all players is very good & they have a great structure. No doubt they have also offset size with high levels of fitness, so they are quick to tackle, get back up & get back in the line. Just great to watch.

JC, completely agree, show some of the highlights at Super Rugby matches. I know the issue is that Stan/Ch9 don't have the rights, just a pity they can't do a highlights package for Stan & on one of the Ch 9 stations. On the weekend on Ch9 Sports Sunday they were interviewing Dom du Toit but couldn't use any of the World Series highlights, they had to use clips from training.

Thanks Peter, I was sure one of the commentators had said Australia had won the tournament & was top but there were implications re only using top 7 tournament results. Being a glass half full Oz supporter I took the first part 'Australia top". And yes not too much of a chance Australia takes out the title unless there is a bit of a Bradbury.

interestingly only because of an unique one off scoring system used this year. If you add all the points the aussies are no 1. However this year only the top 7 scores are used , with 8 games played boks drop their score of 5 points whilst aussies drop a score of 10 points. It makes it even harder for the aussies to improve, their next score to drop is 13 whilst the boks is 10. So the aussies have to score 7 points more than the boks and score more than 13 points. Aussies have been more consistent but the boks have won or been mediocre (most wins of any team by far though).

Excellent wrap-up, Hugh. To promote the Sevens more, I wonder if the big screens at home Super Rugby matches could be used to show half-time highlights, eg clips from the Aus final win over NZ, including the celebration, could feature at this weekend’s Brumbies QF.

They have played really well. They’re not the biggest and you noticed that when they were shaking hands with NZ after the game, but they’ve been pretty decisive in defence and have pace to burn in attack. Playing great footy and exciting to watch!

Both teams are just Wow. When on tour the men's every so often they would blare the song Wagonwheel on the bus. I bet they gave it a good ole pounding after that win.
