All fans want consistency, but which AFL sides bring it?

By brad fooks / Roar Rookie

Season 2022 has been full of highs and lows, except for Melbourne, who have dealt with their issues well enough and are doing enough to win their games.

What teams and fans want is some consistency but ultimately know it won’t be there every week.

But what frustrates is when a side put in a fantastic performance against a team who had been playing well, then don’t turn up the next week and lose to a team who had done nothing for a month.

Already, Collingwood’s loss to West Coast looks even worse the more they keep losing. Hawthorn lost to St Kilda by ten goals, then beat Geelong and have since lost to Sydney and Essendon, who had barely turned up on a weekly basis.

We should expect that, on any given week, a team could produce the best they have to offer and surprise a few – it just infuriates supporters knowing they can do it but not every week.

The Demons have a system and they say to the opposition, “Beat us at our own game”, which if you look over the years has been the benchmark for the top teams. They work out a way to win.

Sports opinion delivered daily

As much as we would like to know what we are going to get from our teams on a week-to-week basis, we go to the football with excitement at the prospect of our team playing well and getting the four points.

Seeing certain results on a weekly basis that helps your team’s ladder position is what makes this competition so exciting.

There are about ten teams who have shown they both deserve to make finals and don’t deserve to make finals, which at least makes for an interesting season.

I guess if a team is going to play well, next week you better just hope it’s not against your team.

North have been pretty consistent. Well, OK. Consistent; not pretty.

We are epically consistent in all facets of our game, from jogging back slowly like seniors who missed the bus as our opponent exits their 50, missing the simplest of targets like Stevie Wonder at a 3-point shooting contest, bombing it on the head of an elderly Kennedy as if he was Carey reborn, to selecting unfit veterans after long layoffs like American voters (and no I'm not a Trump fan). All we needed was a drugs scandal (hello Rioli). 10/10 for the Eagles.

The joy of this match is who knows who will turn up and/or play well but it is an important 4 points for both teams

Well done on first piece. Yes, it is exciting when many teams battle for limited finals spots. Sadly, my team is not one of them. Still look forward to each round and the finals. I hope Dees or Freo win because i have a money interest with a cover bet on the Lions.

I like that you wrapped up with the excitement aspect. Because I think the inconsistency, is really just the levelling of the middle teams. Apart from West Coast, North and even Essendon now it’s good to look at a game and be able to give both teams a chance. It feels like a long time since we’ve had a competition this open
