Peru wary of Socceroos' fighting spirit

By News / Wire

Former Peru international Nolberto Solano says Australia’s fighting spirit has the South Americans wary heading into next week’s World Cup play-off in Qatar.

The Socceroos will face Peru in a winner-takes-all inter-continental match at Doha’s Ahmad bin Ali Stadium on Monday (Tues 0400 AEST).

Australia reached the game with a 2-1 win over the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday (Weds AEST), sealed through Ajdin Hrustic’s late winner.

Solano, who played alongside Socceroos Lucas Neill and Craig Moore during his career at English Premier League clubs Newcastle and West Ham, is an assistant coach of the national team.

While Peru are heading into the clash with Australia as favourites to earn the World Cup berth in Qatar, Solano said they won’t be expecting anything other than a tough game against Graham Arnold’s team.

“Australia hasn’t changed,” Solano told Qatari TV giant Bein Sports.

“Of course, (they’ve) changed players probably, but still … (a) very strong side.

“They have the passion. They never give up.

“We know it will be a difficult match.

“We understand … even if they are behind the goal, the score, they are still fighting.

“That’s Australia. So we have to be ready for that.”

Peru are yet to arrive in Qatar and have been training in Spain, where they played a friendly against New Zealand last week.

Australia returned to the training field in Doha on Thursday evening after a day off on Wednesday.

Having come-from-behind against Jordan in a 2-1 friendly win last week and then defeated the UAE despite conceding an equaliser just minutes after Jackson Irvine’s opener, captain Maty Ryan has been impressed by resilience shown in those two matches.

“When we’ve conceded goals in this campaign thus far – obviously you want to keep clean sheets – but when we have conceded it’s almost like it’s been a real shock to the system and we haven’t really responded well,” Ryan said.

“That was mentioned early doors in this camp.

“On the back of the Jordan game, and now this one (UAE), we’ve shown a real great reaction when we have conceded and weathered the moments and the emotions that come directly after conceding.

“We’ve gone on to win both games, which is a very pleasing thing.”

Spongy? The only thing spongy I saw was the sponges they get out of the sea. The pitches I saw in the Meditterean were dirt no grass dust bowls how they would be spongy is a mystery. I never set foot on any proper pitches. How do they go from a rock hard dust bowl to the spongefest and adapt? Mueller played on cobbelstones they are even harder.

Only in Lima competitions? Well while the Peru league is dominated by Lima teams its not a Lima competition. Your confusing Peru with Bolovia they have the most locals. Usually the locals are the poorer players and the European based players are the best. There is an advantage is playing local players with less travel to games and adapted to local conditions.

Hey everyone Illuminating conversation and I am at a loss as to how the socceroos cannot beat a team that only plays in Lima competitions? So if they beat Chile and Columbia they got something, what is it and what could it be that we don't have other than a system they play domestically and that they play and are the players that are a bit faster a bit stronger and a more delicate touch of the ball in their domestic competition. I took a team into a new competition some time ago and we lost our first game 14-0, ouch, we kept losing and got a coach in to look at us. We played 4-4-2. I was switched from left back to right mid in 4-3-3 the forward was moved to centre mid, point is we lost badly the first five games but then got the losses down to occasional draws and finaly a win over the team that won the comp. You get my point, it is about, I dunno, do you? I hope Anie does, it could make a real impact.

One) Olyroos had forgotten how to defend after dominating for 3/4 of the match. After Olyroos’ leading, in two occasions, Turkmenistan could have scored to level 1-1. Two) Have just watched the Uzbekistan vs Iraq match. Very spectacular it is. Uzbekistan deserve the win because they played 107 minutes with 10 men and a substituted goalie. But the penalty shoot outs were dull.

Never watched anything on Netflix, I refuse to watch any Foxtel News product again, got offered here you can watch Kayo as I only watch the grand prix on it, no thanks. I have watched more W-league than overseas football and I dont miss it in the slightest. The reverse is happening with family watching Paramount shows which i dont watch.

I agree – I only have it for the football and there is a fair library on there. What I have also noticed is: 1. How much their content is building up. When I can’t use my daughter’s Netflix I’m not even slightly tempted to get it. 2. The quality of use is improving. It’s becoming more like Netflix as time goes on. Now the APL just need to spend a bit more on the A League coverage – a couple more cameras and high definition, etc.

Australia U23 dominates matches , Turkmenistan have improved a lot they used to be a weakling in Asia now made it out of the group stage in an asian championship whereas before they wouldn;t have qualified. Australia did well enough , they hit the post but didnt score till the flukey goal . Darrigo hits a long ball forward I assume to Bernado marked by a tall defender. The ball is well over Benardo, it was just low enough for the defender to get a touch on it and then hits the underside of the crossbar. Bernardo taps in on the rebound but the ball was already well behind the goal line and spun out so own goal. Gauci has balls of steel, this Turkmenistan player chasing a ball which he had no chance of getting to and Gauci parried away then swings a foot across the nether regions of Gauci it must have connected on the thigh, the player goes down howling and Gauci is unaffected. The last 10 minutes I think they bottled it a bit, the funny bit was when a ball went into the area in a challenge with Darrigo , and Gauci smothered it under a turkmnenistan foot, then the ball is directly under Gauci chest but he doesn't see it turns around , so another player comes in to have a go and Gauci smothers it again but this time gathers it. After that Darrigo comes into congratulate him but Gaucci tells him off for the original challenge. Reminds me of Kelava drops the ball and then tells off the defenders. I dont get how anyone cannot get Paramount 90 a year, 75 with a discount code from the A-league clubs, its the bargain of the century.

If only Mooy could kick and scratch. Its a bit ridiculous calling the Australia team a kick and scratch effort team with Mooy in there. its not like the golden generation were technical players either.

The only criticism you could have is Behich turning his back on the shot in the first goal, the first goal did require a great finish, the second goal the defence was better and the goal featured two deflections. So called Aussie spirit when a player turns their back on a shot like that, Wilkshire does it all the time now for Sydney as well. Thats how it works in football sometimes you get the better of the match and dont get any luck and the win, other times the reverse happens. It was a dead rubber for Peru so they didnt play at 100% , and Australia were still in it albeit only if Denmark lost. Peru were the better team against Denmark and lost.

So after years of technical training and tactical smarts all we can bring to the table is “kick and scratch”. South American sides can do things things as well cynical acting, but they all comfortable on the ball. But the game is not in South America which levels up the teams IMO.

Do not feel bored. Australia U-23 plays Turkmenistan U-23 tonight at 11:00 pm in the quarter final of U-23 Asian Cup. But you need Paramount+ membership. Some of these matches in the tournament are good while some bad.

Don't give away our game plan! Actually, 5ft 4in is quite short for an average height, almost looks too short. Our U17 NT girls would probably exceed that average height.

The review of the Australia vs Peru shows that Socceroos' defence was bad. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fR-txBJG-B4 For the first goal lost, Australia had 6 men against Peru's 3 men (0:09 of the video). For the second goal, Australia had 7 men against Peru's 5 men (1:04 of the video). Those were very bad defence. Obviously, Bert Van Marwijk did not do a good job. From time to time there are people saying Mooy do not do well in defence. That seems to be the case. However, some say that he is an attacking mid-fielder. So, how should Arnold deal with it?

If you google the average height of Peruvian male, you find their average is just 5 feet 4 inches. Would that mean Socceroos should play high ball at some points of time in the match?

Waz, I believe Covid & variants are influencing the behaviour of a significant portion of our population, I play social table tennis two mornings a week, and have observed a marked decline in the number of active players. Quite a few regulars have not attended since Covid began, while many others have ceased attending in recent weeks. Anecdotally, church attendances have dropped, and many businesses have experienced downturns, although the latter have benefited from higher spending levels from customers who have ventured out, ASX listed Mosaic Brands, owners of several chains of ladies wear retailers catering for more mature consumers, have listed the significant downturn in foot traffic as the main contributing factor to experiencing a notable loss in the current financial period, following a healthy profit history in years gone by. There are doubtless other factors, including the inclement weather for much of this year to date, The former I will leave to the experts.

Presumably as soon as we thrash Peru, declare ourselves a Republic, and finish appointing Arnie as First Head of State …. as soon as that’s all done; we’ll get an article bemoaning how low A League crowds are and blaming everything from pro/rel to the NSL. So I’ll drop this here in anticipation: https://www.sportspromedia.com/news/afl-2022-season-average-match-attendance-covid/ AFL crowds are down to a 26 year low, the cause is being discussed widely but no one is mentioning the A League, Eurosnobs, pro/rel, NSD’s or anything to do with the sokkha (for once, we are not getting blamed :stoked: ) So as we move in to double-figure articles on how to grow the attendances next season, cast the net a bit wider - is it COVID? the economy? what is it??
