Get your questions in for Coach's Corner after a hectic few days of rugby

By The Roar / Editor

We’re still getting our collective breath back after a stunning weekend of international rugby where the northern hemisphere sides hit back hard.

Wins by Ireland, Scotland, England, Wales and France have completely shifted the World Rugby Rankings for the second week in a row and it’s likely to change again this week given how close the rankings are.

With the chaos of the weekend we thought it was the ideal time to have Nick Bishop answer your questions this Friday.

How did the northern hemisphere sides turn it around? Was there any secret to all these games?

Ireland defeating the All Blacks in New Zealand was a huge historic moment. Is there cause for major alarm for the All Blacks or do we all need to cool our jets?

Closer to home and the TMO raised plenty of eyebrows with some of the calls in the England-Wallabies second Test in Brisbane.

Nick Bishop will be analysing the game on his usual Wednesday column but feel free to ask a direct question about what went on in Brisbane and there’s a good chance Nick will answer it this week.

If you need a reminder of how the Q&A Coach’s corner works here is the last article Nick did addressing your questions.

We’re sure you’ve got plenty of questions for these and many other topics for Nick this Friday. So get asking in the comments below and, of course, check back in right here at The Roar to see the answers.

They want Bobby's power on the first carry.

Yeah, not sure why they're not playing Bobby V at 6. He & Wilson looked like a pretty quality and balanced backrow.

Wallabies exiting is painfull to watch - this all started in the Cheika era - we basically field a kick off and then take a couple of almost conceded runs where the front rower or lock basically coillapse to the ground and then we caterpillar and box kick - whats the point - not to mention the threat of conceding a penalty for sealing off the ball - we may as well just field the kick and hoof it in to touch back at the half way and start with a lineout. I was hoping this might improve in the Rennie era - but no - its predictable as ever and really affecting the way we play - Marika seems to have been singled out for kick offs - he does the same thing every time and we end up being under the pump at every kockoff receipt - very predictable

my theory with all these calf and hamstring injuries is that the modern day boots are not providing the neccessary support - if you look at them theyre more like sprinters shoes - i suppose the colour of them is all that matters these days

Yes all teams lose confidence after a 42-23 win eh Nick. :silly: Perhaps having no hope was a more appropriate description. But please tell me how you have to force a backrower off to bring a prop on but then have uncontested scrums where you force a side with 2 players off ( Both forwards ) to put 8 in the scrum.

Hi Lara - appears to be the officials. NZ's Stuff newspaper also has a critique which spells it out plainly (but left me confused). Links below. I'm glad my job on the sidelines is just on hydration.

So even though he has his right arm up high and even though he has his left arm low and even though he takes a big step towards the target with his right foot (look again at my second gif- it’s his right) and even though he puts his head to the left and even though his head hits the attacker’s right hip.. you still think he wasn’t trying to hit with his right shoulder, and was “trying to get his left shoulder involved”, whatever that means. Hilarity for sure Nick.

Spot on Jez. If he wanted to make a right shoulder tackle, all he had to is plant his feet and get his head out of the way fully, but he runs right across him instead, and spins off to the deck on the other side. And at the moment when Phil reckons he is making a right shoulder tackle, his left foot is well in front, which makes no sense at all. You cannot hit on a shoulder with the opposite foot advanced.

Enough of the fuzzy 70's vids, I can't take any more Phil  If he is looking to hit on the right shoulder, why does he never plant his feet? Esp given that you have said the ball-carrier is stepping in to fix him? And since when have you seen a tackler line up a guy on his right shoulder with his left foot in front at the moment of impact? But when he lines him up it’s very clear he’s trying to do a big shot with his right shoulder (you said he’d hit with his left shoulder). Then the attacker stops to fix him and pass, meaning Petaia almost overruns him. 'Almost overruns'. Jeez man, he ends up two metres past the target! Anyway enough of this hilarity - as always, a twisted pleasure.

Thanks NB. Agree he’s trying to be square. He’s just missed the timing. If he gets his head across in time the solid contact will 100% be his chest/left shoulder. He’s wrapping with both arms but the right shoulder never makes contact. It’s the same technique a top grid iron player I coached in rugby had been taught his entire life. Have always thought its fraught with risk.

Thanks mate. Agree totally misjudged it. Yes his intention with his right shoulder is very clear.

yep, not sure how much we can blame the lateral movement (looks like he just misjudged it) but very clear he’s aiming for the right shoulder (for what its worth). the dropped left arm is pretty conclusive.

You just said to Jez “ It looks like the head makes contact with the attacker’s right hip”…! Why do you think his right arm is up and his left is down low then?

He didn't 'put his head to the left' though did he Phil? The tackle is dynamic not static. He is moving to his right because he wants to get square. That is why there is no real contact made with the right shoulder at all - at any point in the tackle. It's obvious.

Glad you are now admitting you got it wrong on which side his head hits Nick. So if he put his head to the left why do you think he would also be trying to hit with his left shoulder?

>Despite that sledge it appears Peyper and his fellow official messed up the law around Savea, and wrongly insisted that the powerful No.8 had to stay off the field following a red card to his teammate Angus Ta’avao. I’m late to the party, and read this tonight. What is the story here? “wrongly insisted”? edit to add a dissection here https://www.sportsjoe.ie/rugby/ardie-savea-jaco-peyper-266824 https://www.rugbypass.com/news/controversy-in-historic-match-they-told-us-that-we-had-to-live-with-the-decision/
