The World Cup done and dusted, summing up the Aussie sevens season

By Hugh_96 / Roar Pro

The rugby sevens season has finished, what a year it has been, with World Sevens Series titles, Commonwealth Games and a World Cup.

The World Cup for the Aussie teams was very much like the Commonwealth Games: bittersweet.

The men again missed out on a bronze medal, going down to Ireland, while the shining aura of the women’s team continues as they were crowned champions.

The World Cup is a high pressure, brutal format, straight knock-out, thanks for coming. On days one and two they played just one game. In many ways it was as much a mental challenge to keep focused as a physical one.

Women sevens
The women have had an undeniably great year – taking out the World Sevens Series title and Commonwealth Games gold. The players and coach Tim Walsh were up front and open they were aiming for the Triple Crown to also take out the World Cup. No team has taken all three in the one year.

While the women were rusty to start against Madagascar, they soon got into their groove, able to play a free-flowing, try-scoring game, or get into the grind against the USA in the semi-final and also in the final against New Zealand.

When it came to the final, the teams matched up well, so a couple of moments can make the difference.

For example, Sharni Williams kicked a conversion near the touch line, Australia only won by two points. Or Niall Williams received a yellow card for throwing the ball away, the commentator saying it was a “massive mistake”, and Australia scored twice with her off the field.

The squad has some real superstars such as Charlotte Caslick, Maddison Levi and Faith Nathan, who are a bit like the strikers up front in football, setting up and scoring the tries – Nathan scored five in the first game and Levi scored three in the final.

But these stars cannot do what they do without the other players doing their bit and doing their bit very, very well.

Australia does not beat New Zealand without Alysia Lefau-Fakaosilea. She draws two tacklers every time she has the ball, provides an offload and is a powerhouse in defence. It is no coincidence that Australia lost to the Kiwis in the Toulouse final, which was the one tournament Lefau-Fakaosilea did not play.

The evergreen Williams is in many ways the spiritual heart of this squad, also taking out player of the final.

The two players who have developed the most this season, Teagan Levi and Sariah Paki, have both become important members of the team. Paki is a starter, plays long minutes and does a lot of the tough things in defence but at the same time can pass and set up plays. Levi comes off the bench and is seriously the full package. At 18 years old she has the confidence of youth, can grubber kick in general play, can hit in a tackle, has speed, can pass and has footy smarts.

A final comment on the women, which probably is not recognised in the media as it should be, these players are supreme athletes. They are not just unbelievably fit, fast and skilled. A real take out of this year and the World Cup is that these players are really, really tough. None of the players shirk from diving head-first into a ruck or making a tackle.

All of that shows real strength in character and attitude. So one can imagine their bodies have taken a bit of a beating over the last 12 months.

The women now have a couple of months off and get back into it in early December in Dubai.

Men sevens
The men’s series has been around a lot longer than the women’s, as has their World Cup – since 1993, while the women’s World Cup has only been around since 2009.

Naturally the men’s World Cup is more competitive between more countries.

The men’s team at the World Cup did what they do: worked hard, made their tackles and took their opportunities. They are never going to shoot the lights out like South Africa or Fiji can. They are a quality team but without many superstars.

They kicked off with an easy win over Uruguay then got over a feisty and competitive France in a gritty game where coach John Manenti used his substitutions well. Unfortunately, they then ran into the eventual champions, Fiji, in the semi-final.

The Fijians got away early with a couple of quick tries, Australia got back in striking range but an intercept pass right on halftime and a questionable yellow card meant the mountain was too high to climb.

Just like the Commonwealth Games, the Aussies went into the bronze medal play off, this time going down to Ireland in a tight match. While they came in fourth it should be noted the hosts and Commonwealth Games gold medalists South Africa did not make it into the semis.

While the Commonwealth Games and World Cup did not go their way, the men did take out the World Rugby Sevens Series, which is an impressive achievement. So the men got more than a pass mark for the year.

Now they have a break until the World Sevens Series kicks off again in November in Hong Kong.

There is sponsorship out there Hugh without relying on Govt. funding. As it was back in the day, those at RA, or ARU as it was then, are to far above themselves to consider doing arranging sponsors!

Have to say I'm surprised they don't have a jersey sponsor, maybe they haven't really been trying as they get govt funding for the 7a

OK, Hugh, I've been to HK a few times, & I did think it strange for it to be ' kicking off' there, at that particular time of year. As it is, the tournament there, has been put on hold for a little while due to the troubles there, & CoviD. Hopefully, now, those troubles are in the past, as IMO, I would prefer HK than any other tournament, mainly due to over 27 nations being there, not including the hosts. So with that, there are the supporters from all of those nations, that make the likes of Wanchai, stand out as a thriving party venue.

Thanks for the read Hugh, but as far as funding goes, I reckon, McLennan, should get off his rear end, & at least try & secure some decent sponsorship. As it is, the 7's have been great for Australia this year, especially the women

Interesting the men go to Hong Kong twice this season November & March, the women just doing the March tournament which I imagine they are very keen to go to - it is where it all started. The women will be keen to head back to Cape Town again after the World Cup success.

Just a pity more people don't get to see them on TV etc, it would a real boost for rugby, even a highlights package of some kind on Stan Think RA may have a new social media content creator, they have put out a lot of good stuff during the tournament such as the dancing in the hotel foyer but what went really viral was the giving the Madagascar players their First Nations jerseys, as the Madagascar players only had 1 jersey to play in and train in. Probably RA's most successful SM post

The women are just such a professional gun side to watch both on and off the field. The men always do it tough against the likes of Fiji/ Sth Africa they need things to go their way. Would have been nice for them to get the bronze but its been a good year. It is also good ot see Irelandand Samoa improving, providing more depth.

The women have just been a pleasure ot follow this year, just a pity more of the Australian sporting public hasn't had a chance to see them in action. It was good to see the Ireland improvement, the other has been the improvement of Samoa, they are going to be very good this World Series, assuming they can keep them

Especially the women, what goals do you set for next year, it still just almost 2 years til the Paris Olympics. Hope the men get a bit more funding so they don't have to just rely on Shuute Shield players

Nice write-up - very keen to see how both sides back up what's been an overwhelmingly successful year for Aussies sevens.

Yes it was a very good year for both the Men & Women in the 7's part of the game, & congrats to them. Even with the men finally winning their first World Series title, was an achievement, after all their years being there. Well seeing HK will kick off the next World Series, they are without doubt the premier tournament, of the series. They host 28 teams in the mens, being the 16 core teams & 12 qualifiers, whilst the Women, at this stage, only have the core teams. So hopefully this upcoming season, we'll see no disruptions, as we've seen over the last couple of seasons, with CoviD, & see the best, in what the 7's can produce.

Try your hand, in going to HK Chook, & apart from knowing what tournament is, the celebrations, are extreme to say the least. Especially away from the stadiums, in the Pubs, Clubs, Bars , & mainly Wanchai.

Thanks for the article, Hugh. Huge achievement for the women to do what they have done this year. And with the young players coming through, the future is bright. Men are going well enough, but not quite up to really beating the top teams regularly, and in the crunch semis and finals on most days. Ireland ate the big surprise in the men's comp............pretty impressive progress as they have only been seriously involved since 2019.

Thanks Hugh, great summary of the World Cup. The Pearls are just so professional now, so few mistakes & enjoyable to watch. Feel sorry for the men, the YC was a shocking call, what can't you make any contact with the opposing player when going up for the ball? The game was done then, Fiji too good already without playing a man down. The men made some shocking mistakes against the green men in the Bronze final, Ireland deserved the win, first time ever to make the top three.
