'Couldn't split them': Roos name co-captains after Ziebell resignation

By News / Wire

North Melbourne players have historically voted to promote Luke McDonald and Jy Simpkin to the co-captaincy after long-time skipper Jack Ziebell stood down ahead of the 2023 AFL season.

Zeibell will remain part of the leadership group after six years and 111 games in the top job.

But father-son pick McDonald (27) and midfielder Simpkin (24) – last year’s vice-captains – will share the reins as the club’s first co-captains.

“The leadership vote was values-based, with a focus on who best represented our Shinboner Spirit,” North Melbourne football boss Todd Viney said.

“From the vote, we couldn’t split Luke and Jy in terms of the influence they’ve had on the playing group and the club as two of our key leaders.”

Simpkin has won back-to-back club best and fairest awards and enters the new role on the back of a wooden spoon and the arrival of coach Alastair Clarkson.

“They are both equally as passionate about getting the club back to where it needs to be, developing our young talent and fostering a positive club culture,” Viney said.

Existing leadership group members Ben Cunnington and Nick Larkey will continue in their positions in 2023 while 24-year-old Ben McKay joins the leadership group for the first time.

Yah, sometimes it's just better to say nothing. I don't know how to get the Edit function to delete the whole post, but at least it partially saves me from fingers that are faster than my filter.

Hmm I wonder what exactly it was. Is nobody allowed to doubt mental health issues and the fact that some people are using it as an out, instead of taking responsibilitys for their own actions.

I'd rather North had no captains and take you lot to the cleaners.

Makes sense - why not share the shame and embarrassment over 2 players rather than just one :silly:

If you stick around this forum long enough, you'll get used to me not saying the correct thing.

Still not a correct thing to say even if behind closed doors it may be the case There are still some close to home that do not play afl or drink or do drugs but have some issues with that illness. So a very sore point is what I'm saying

I read somewhere on here where it said the whole clarko and f@gan thing had, cant remember the exact words but gone quiet in recent months, my bet is what's the odds of it starting again with what, say one or two weeks to go before the season starts or even the week of. I'd put a $50 on it if I could.lol.

The beauty of a forum like this is I don't have to be politically correct. I'll bet my left nut that someone is in the news before the season start for all the wrong reasons. Of course, just like confession at church, a mental health disorder absolves you of all responsibility, it would appear, in the AFL world nowadays.

Read what I said again. It's right about now; someone gets arrested on an overseas trip for accidentally gr0ping a woman while drunk, only for the club to exonerate them of all responsibility due to mental health issues. You know it's going to happen.

I’m with you, I don’t understand it, one minute clubs come out with the old it doesn’t matter who’s captain because all they basically do is toss the coin and maybe do abit more media stuff etc but otherwise leadership is a job done by more than one person at the club its a group effort etc etc or something along those lines basically and then they come out with having two captains instead of just one that basically just has to toss the coin. Maybe that’s it, maybe its as much about sharing those off field commitments than it is anything else. Oh and yes I can see what you mean by the last bit as well, for every one person with serious issues I think theres 4 trying to take the p out of the system and not just taking responsibilitys for their own actions.
