Can NRL please stop coming up with endless names for rounds and 'respect' us fans by focusing on footy?

By The King of the World / Roar Guru

With the idea of Pride Round causing division in the NRL, the counter offer is Respect Round where the idea is to simply respect everyone’s views.

I’ll give a few examples about me. I go to the gym, I’m straight, I work in retail, I’m Catholic, I have tattoos, I love wrestling, I go for the Knights and my all-time favourite band is Genesis.

I know people who don’t go to the gym, people who are other sexualities, support other teams or even don’t watch the game, don’t watch wrestling, work in other professions, different religions or even atheist, don’t have ink and whose favourite band isn’t Genesis nor do they even like them.

Do I care? No. Does it upset me? Not in the slightest. Have I forced them to see things how I do? No chance in Hell.

Do I believe they have the right to see differently? Absolutely. Did I need a football round for me to realise I should respect other people’s ways of life? No freaking way. Do I think there should be a respect round? Not a freaking chance!

When I saw the idea of the name, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. It’s like the NRL thinks we’re all a bunch of children who don’t know any better. I live my way and everyone else lives theirs. Instead of us needing a football round to respect everyone’s opinions, it’s just a simple matter of common sense.

What I believe the NRL needs to do is just stick to letting us fans focus on what we want with the NRL and that’s football. No worrying about the endless names of rounds. We have a few which have good causes but the idea of a round dedicated to respecting everyone’s views is atrocious. I watch the game with absolute passion and I love it to death.

What I believe is needed is just a matter of everyone should focus on themselves. Focus on accomplishing things you want to do with your life. You have a dream job you want? Go for it.

You have places you want to travel to? Work, pay for your bills and food, save up and travel. I guarantee that you don’t need me or anyone else to approve of what you want. It’s your life, you live it how you want and let others live their lives. You didn’t need a football round to know any of this, it’s all simple logic.

This article of course won’t determine whether or not a Respect Round will happen. The idea behind it is simply live and let live.

I live my life and everyone else live their lives. If anyone, most people who are reading this didn’t even need this article to know anything I mentioned.

Now Roarers, I have had my say and the floor is yours.

Australia being the mindless sheep that we are copying everything the Seppo's do in the new woke Australia. When will trans players be allowed to compete in NRLW? can imagine someone built like Marty Kapow running at Keeley Davis

So because social cause themed rounds don't achieve much (in your view, not necessarily in agreement with the published, peer reviewed research) they should do nothing at all... which can only achieve less.

While these social issues may not be relevant to you or your situation, for many people in our community they are huge factors in their lives. It’s a small price for us to pay as punters to put up with the occasional themed round if it helps improve the lives of even a handful of people Ok hold on. I didn't say social issues aren't relevant - I said just calling your round a name and saying 'job done' is not a way to address them. There's far more in it for the NRL in terms of marketing than there is for anyone who finds themselves in the situations they purport to be 'supporting'. No one who holds actual bigoted views is going to change their mind because the football said to. All this cheap tokenism does is 1) dilute the message to the point where people who aren't all that interested in it start to tune it out, and worse, 2) make people who might have been 'allies' feel they are being lectured to and get defensive about the whole thing. Oh and 3) Ensure heaps of cheap shares and likes on Twitter for the NRL, along with sales of 'X round' jerseys. Which of course is the real objective

Well said Dionysus - I do agree. Irony is I reckon the NRL will attract countless more fans if they don't divide with all the identity politics stuff. Far easier to attract more fans to the game - and retain them! - if your pitch is actually the games/matches/players! Also you've said it well by focusing on things related to rugby league not politics. Eg charities for head injuries. That's clearly part of the game, so I think fans would understand that. There are many fans recently who've been alienated by all the political stuff. Focus on rugby league players/matches/rules and more people will flock to the games!

I thought I was trying to build the game up   If it were so popular you wouldn’t need to give out any, popularity and free font usually go hand in hand for a successful enterprise I answered your question  I said no idea. C’mon man, taking the mickey now  It’s the only correlation you gave and it was a horrible example  You’re so bad at arguing, you’d think with how often you do it on here you’d actually improve at some point   You’ve got to be a boomer, no self respecting young person is this bad at arguing

Exactly - you think the game is a joke so you're being dismissive of the facts. I'm sure you could get free tix but only in a very small minded world would one use the fact that some tix are given out to indigenous people to an exhibition game that literally celebrates their culture is a reason to deem it a failure. However, you didn't answer the question, how many where there in the 27k who showed up? I'm not sure you understand what the term "literally" means when you're only reference to the TV numbers is "same with the TV numbers". Are you so correct that you don't have to elaborate on what is an acceptable number and why? Why 500k out rates the most direct correlation I've given you? But hey, it doesn't really matter what facts are offered or questions asked to elaborate on your overly general simplistic but ultimately wrong comments does it? You don't have to like the concept (which is fine) your presence won't be missed but it is a fact that the wider public do enjoy the concept and the game and that is supported by the numbers.

What record or disc was Land of Confusion on? I thought I had all the Genesis records. The last one that I bought was Duke so there must be some after that.

I’m amazed that a post on my records by Mike Rutherford and Steve Hackett, that I enjoy, has been stopped.

I have transferred all my Genesis records and some of their individual records to my old computer except the first one which wasn't very good. My favorite is "Smallcreep's Day - Side 2" by Mike Rutherford. I also have four Steve Hackett records and joined the Steve Hackett fan club when I was living in Hackett, ACT. In that respect I was unique.

I'm not trying to build it up, i think the game is a joke. You're the one saying it has a good following, and the original quote i was replying to used the words "But to certain massive portions of the NRL supporter base". No idea, but i know if it was in Australia i'd be easily able to ask one of my indigenous friends for a ticket and get my hands on one within 24 hours without anyone paying for it. My last two posts have literally said why 500K is a poor effort, i'm not typing it out again. You can read Oath i'm dismissive  you compare two things that aren't even the same  i'll taunt you all day long saying dumb stuff like that, as lots of people tend to do to you whenever i see you comment on something
