I don’t hate Manly. I quite like them. But, to paraphrase that great footy fan Gertrude Stein, a penalty is a penalty is a penalty…

NRL NEWS: Warriors cop heat over Lodge's $700,000 payout, Hasler facing fine over ref rant

Nice personal attack. It makes your argument so much more convincing. I guess you must have been at the game, because the Fox coverage rarely showed the ten metres. As for Eels laying all over the ruck I’m going to have to call BS on that one. As I said, Jake Trbojevic is pretty much the most consistent offender in the league for that particular sin, and his effort in that game could (and probably should) have been penalised even more. None of which has any bearing on my comment – that fans accept disparity in attack and defence, but seem incapable of accepting disparity in discipline. Keep taking those angry pills.

Love your work Mike, but no way in the world was Madden man of the match for Tigers. My Dally M ranking was 3 Points: Hastings, 2 Points: Hastings, 1 Point: Hastings, with of course an honourable mention for Hastings. He was running everything.

It puzzles me how we can accept that one team’s attack can be so much better or defence so much worse than another’s that a big blowout score results, yet when a similar imbalance in discipline / penalties occurs we immediately assume it’s the ref’s fault for not penalising teams equally. Manly’s discipline was atrocious. They could easily have been penalised twice as often as they were. Jurbo in particular got away with so much hanging around in the ruck he could have been penalised another half dozen times. As for the Tuipolotu tackle, it is even more astounding that Manly fans are still defending it, given the number of images that have been published of his forearm clearly making contact with Perham’s head.

Keep telling yourself that.

Turbo set to miss season after dislocating shoulder as Eels slip past Sea Eagles in thriller

100%. But unintentional high contact has ben consistently penalised since magic round last year. We can’t bay for consistency then complain when we get it.

Hope you got your tinfoil hat in your team colours.

Maybe. But I could also point to another half dozen ruck infringements just from Jurbo. You lost. Get over it.

Have a look at the still frame featured on pretty much every article discussing it. Clearly shows the arm in contact with the head. Sure he was slipping, and it’s tough luck, but it’s been a penalty all season and will continue to be a penalty for the rest of the season.

Penalty count could have been worse. Jurbo seems to have a free pass to hang around in the ruck. I think he inherited it from Cameron Smith when her retired.

Manly discipline was abysmal.

Barrett's successor will need to tread warily unless Gus can clean up Bulldogs’ mess

Yeah Andrew, sorry to say I think the Tigers are now locked in for the spoon. There was a genuine glimmer of hope when they ground out those two tough, ugly wins over good teams. But with Doeihi and Talau out already, and now Brooks, Nofa, Gildart, Kepoa and Laurie all on the injured list, they will get belted by the Dogs on the ‘sacked coach bounce’. I’m not alone in thinking it’s time for them to move on from Madge. Bring in a new coach now and get a head start on the rebuild for next season.

Has your NRL club's season already gone to the dogs? Call me delusional, but...

Great article, Mike.
I mostly feel sorry for the Tigers, who are already decimated, because they are going to suffer the dead cat / new manager bounce.

Who's in the running to replace Barrett – and what do they need to fix first?

The Tigers try disallowed for an obstruction in which no player was obstructed, followed later by an allowed try to Manly in which the try scorer received the ball behind the lead runner… A player sent off for holding down in the ruck to the tune of four seconds – while slower rucks by both sides went unchecked for the rest of the game… yeah, I’d call that luck (or something less flattering) going their way.

The Roar’s NRL expert tips and predictions: Magic Round 10

Jakob Arthur played 5/8 against the Knights the previous week and they went okay. So as obvious as it may seem to you in hindsight, there was recent evidence that he probably was the best option. You also don’t suggest who you would play at centre instead of Brown? Parra have had a horrendous run of injuries to outside backs, and centre is a crucial position in both attack and defence. Apart from Matterson (who is playing for a contract) which other player really stood up in that game? The Eels were ordinary right across the park. Just my opinion, because I’m not a professional coach, but if BA failed at anything, it was getting the team up for the contest – not in selecting the best lineup from the players available.

Leave Jake Arthur alone: Why nepotism claims make me ashamed to be an Eels fan

Yeah Albo, Dragons haven’t beaten Tigers since 2018. I’m hoping Tigers can keep that run going 😁

The Roar’s NRL expert tips and predictions: Round 8

Tigers get zero six again calls to Eels 9. Everyone death riding them to get the spoon. Madge constantly in the media crosshairs. “the mainstream rugby league media doesn’t trouble the coaches of ‘small’ teams” Really?

'Small' NRL clubs may not get close calls, but their coaches don't get calls for their heads either

Early guilty plea. No loading for previous offences.

Hard to defend NRL bunker which continually gives ammunition to ‘blow it up’ critics

Nice wrap up. Enjoyed the game and Panthers earned that win. But is anyone else getting sick of the increasing interference with tacklers? Driving the ball player has slipped into manhandling the tacklers. Both Wighton and Luai were literally grappling tacklers away from the ball carrier before the held call. Have the refs been told not to penalise for this any more?
