Dolphins poach second Broncos star with Origin prop following Farnworth out the door

By News / Wire

A recruitment double blow has finally lit the fuse between Brisbane and their new cross-town NRL rivals the Dolphins, one week before the club’s first game.

Tom Flegler will join Broncos teammate Herbie Farnworth at Redcliffe next NRL season after the Tully prop’s four-year deal at the Dolphins from 2024 was confirmed on Sunday.

The State of Origin forward’s signing comes despite interest from Sydney clubs and just two days after in-demand centre Farnworth’s signature was trumpeted by the Dolphins.

The 23-year-old Flegler has played 74 NRL games since his 2019 debut and played a solitary Origin in 2021, despite constant suspensions stemming from his aggressive style of play.

The Dolphins’ shot across the Broncos’ bows follows an off-season of recruitment swings and misses from the new club and coach Wayne Bennett.

Bennett missed key target Cameron Munster, with half Sean O’Sullivan likely to partner 19-year-old Isaiya Katoa in round one against the Sydney Roosters on Sunday.

Emerging prop Tom Gilbert and the experienced front-row core of Jesse and Kenny Bromwich, Felise Kaufusi, Jarrod Wallace and Mark Nicholls will carry the load this year.

“The Dolphins have always said that our recruitment strategy was about building a club with a strong future, rather than just for season 2023,” Dolphins boss Terry Reader said.

“The signature of Tom and Herbie Farnworth are great examples of that strategy at work.

“We are very excited about what these two players can add to the squad we have already assembled.”

So that's 8 players gone? I thought you said only 3 remain? Over reaching again Jensa?

At $800k though? Maybe that will be the standard with the increased cap but it’s above his grade now.

I’m not the biggest Palasia fan but Robati had skills either on the edge or prop. They have Hetherington coming back giving Willison this year and TeKura and Bayliss Brow to come through after Jensen and Taupau finish up.

What do you mean 3? There is at least 6 and then you can add those who were injured for the majority of 2020. Penrith 2019 compared to 2017 however? 20 new faces in 2 years.

Losing Palasia and Robati will hurt. I hope Willison comes on strong this year. We will need him next year.

Yep, he’s done nothing to warrant $800k in Bronco colours so good luck to him. I like Fleg, I will happily see him in Maroon but prop in one area where there is some depth at Red Hill.

You could look at the situation more than one way. Seems that the Dolphins have had a chop at a number of players from the Broncs, and that was always going to happen. What they haven't done, it seems, is approach the Titans with the same level of intent. I mean, there was a very poorly supported rumour that D Fifita might have a look, and then they ended up with Isaako, who wasn't a regular in the Titans team at the time. Wallace has said he instructed his management to make the approach, rather than being 'poached' like Flegler. For all the talk about 'what does this mean about Kevvy's coaching', it can't be that bad if the players he's producing are sort-after commodities. Could mean many things or nothing. Just an alternate view. But I've got to say, Flegler and Haas could be a battle for the ages - Dolphins v Broncos, Maroons v Blues, fighting for a green n gold jersey. Cheering for Haas as a Bronco, Flegler as a Maroon... Both got 10 years ahead of them with any luck. Could be epic.

Hard to create a rivalry when you have players in your club who already know the guys they are playing against are their teammates in 12 months

Haas, Carrigan, Staggs, and Flegler were the last remaining remnants of the '20 spoon season. Name another team in any era where only three players remain from two seasons back.

The attraction to the Cliffys would be that they were $2M short of their cap spend with only three players left to buy. Farnsworth and Flegler have signed since then. Unless they are both million dollar players, there's another to come.

Another good pick up. The concerns about Dad’s Army should be starting to ease.

Can’t pay Haas and Carrigan what they are getting and also pay Flegler marquee money. Same in the backs, they’ve pit their hard earned into Walsh, Cobbo and Staggs.

Considering the Broncos gutted the entire Brisbane Rugby League they should probably just grin and bear it.

Totally get both Herbie and Tom going for the big money offers. Life in the NRL is short and only one team can ultimately win. Having said that, the Dolphins are going no where near the title. All they have, is an accumulated cash fund owing to rejection and an ageing forward pack. Good on the Broncos having a sensible monetary attitude. They are in good hands.Hopefully a premiership shot, too. Very happy to also be be proved wrong about the Dolphins. They are a Queensland team after all. I just don't see it.

He looked pretty impressive last season. A few clubs were after him but it still seems that the key to winning titles is centered around the spine region. Plenty of clubs have packs which are potentially good enough to win a title over the next few years but it's pretty rare to do so without a standout halves player and a gun hooker and or fullback. Maybe Herbie and Katoa are two such players in the next few years. The Broncos will be mighty cheesed off if they miss out and some ex players are holding up the shield again.

A number of the '22 Broncos players regard the 'Cliffys as their first team.
