Young Socceroos poised to pounce in Portugal

By TheSecretScout / Roar Guru

With Football Australia finally starting to invest money into the underage national sides, an interesting young Socceroo’s squad has been chosen to take part in a four-team round robin tournament in Portugal.

Australia will take on European heavyweights at this age level in Portugal, England and the fast-rising Norway in the beautiful city of Lisbon in four weeks.

The young Socceroos will begin with a match against the old enemy of England (11 June) followed by Norway (13 June) at the Cidade do Futebol complex and the last match against tournament hosts Portugal (9 June) at Sports Complex Real Sport Clube.

Trevor Morgan’s 20-man squad has several players based in Europe as well as the sons of some famous fathers, who will make their debut in the green and gold.

Immediately sticking out in this squad is Paul Okon Jr.

Junior is the son of one of Australia’s greatest ever players and plays his club football with arguably the best underage side in Europe – Benfica.

Capable of playing in defence or midfield, his wand of a left foot will finally be seen in Australian colours – although the player is still eligible to represent other nations.

Another player with options in terms of national sides is Matteo Mazzone.

The Italy-born striker has played already for the country of his birth and also qualifies for Germany, but his form with Wolfsburg in the past 18 months has seen the Australian FA reach out.

Former Melbourne City junior Christian Naveen is another attacker who has been enjoying life in Germany.

Naveen has been a regular contributor for his 1860 Munich side this season and a call up for the talented winger has been well overdue.

Jaden Gaskin has been in Portugal since 2020 with Boavista, after being spotted playing for Sydney Olympic.

Like the a for mentioned Mazzone and Naveen he is capable of playing as a striker or a winger.

Completing the European based selections is the son of former Adelaide United cult hero Michael Valkanis, Dimitri.

South Australia-born Dimitri has so far resisted the overtures of Greece to make his debut for the country of his birth – his playing style is eerily similar to his fathers.

Another South Australian born prodigy Luka Jovanovic, had been expected to represent Serbia, but the Serbian FA’s delay in contacting the family – has seen Australia momentarily pounce for the in-demand striker.

Emin Durakovic is a name that has long been discussed in Australian coaching circles, the talented Melbourne city midfielder has not yet debuted for the first team due to injuries and concussions.

If the surname sounds familiar, that’s because he’s the son of former Socceroo and South Melbourne great, Mehmet.

The highest profile absence from this age group, is the son of former Socceroos stalwart Josip Skoko, Noa – who edges closer to representing Croatia, after playing for their under age national sides.

Johnny Yull would’ve likely been a selection had it not been for stress fractures in his back, while Nestor Irakunda is given a rest – after a very physically demanding season in the A League.

With Australia constantly languishing behind other countries in Asia, let alone Europe – when it comes to matches and training camps for the underage side.

It is fantastic to finally see the Australian FA finally trying to play catch up with the rest of the world, especially in relation to chasing players with dual nationalities.

im talking purely as 17 year old who still has some way to grow into his adult body - adelaide have been load managing him, given his tender age and how taxing his explosiveness is to his own body at his current age he needs to push hard this pre season to the point where he should comfortably be able to run out 45 minutes (nobody is expecting him to run out 90 minutes, thats going to need at least a couple of full pre seasons) but half of that should be an achievable goal

Thanks SS, great to read about the juniors. Has Irankunda really had a 'very physically demanding' season in the A League? Most games were 15 minute cameos with more than a fair share of runs, but very physically demanding?

7 figures for Yull? Why did Veart cut him from the squad. What was interesting was when Yull started the match against the Mariners in the final round and then got subbed off at half time and we haven't seem him since. Looking back that was the best half Adelaide played against CCM recently even though they were down by 2.

the talents always been in the country, i've always said up to around the 14-16 age; australia is on par with youth developement at the same age in europe - after that in australia you hit the bottleneck of not enough games, lack of money etc etc. then you have to try and get past the stigma of what young australian players are "worth" in europe, the selling club and the agent/s in particular need to do a better job in convincing clubs to part with there money. i like bos (still got a few things to work on) but if he was playing in europe, that figure would be double - especially as a soon to be 21 year old. adelaide were right to ask a seven figure fee from chelsea for johnny yull (it was a low 7 figure fee as well) and chelsea with their endless spending rejected it. i'd like to see the figures being branded about for irakundas move to europe be doubled, regardless of the deficiencies in his game currently - a player with that attacking skillset would transfer for 3-4 million if he was already in europe. i always use de ketelaere's recent move from brugge to ac milan as the example (yes hes a bit older 22) but brugge got 29 million pounds for him - there australian strikers who's metrics match up with him up to the age of 20 the current average of $400-$800k for a talented australian teenager is derisory a lot of the time

lots of players with potential in this age group, but as of right now its just potential - they all have a long way to go in becoming professional adult footballers. no questions that its a sizeable talent pool and alot of that is down to australia finally starting to target players who aren't born in the country and qualify through a parent or a grandparent. there's no shame in doing this, even much larger football countries are scoping the world for players that qualify (italy are searching for stikers like this, due to their shortage in producing them). remember some of this selected squad can line up for 2-3 countries, just because they're playing in an underage national team does not 'lock' them into that country. okon jn could just as easily represent belgium, mazzone has played for italy already and could line up for germany, valkanis has already played for greece, jovanovic was all set for serbia until they got slack with thier communication, durakovic could line up for montenegro if he wanted to, noa skoko has been playing for croatia. the main thing is making all the boys who qualify for australia welcome, if they keep on progressing in their club careers - it will be up to the player and their families to decide which national team fits best

Great summary SS of the talent we currently have. I really feel we as a national team will be very competitive for the next 10 years at least. We have just come back from a WC where we finished 11th. People need to let that sink in. 11th in a sport of over 200 nations and around a 100 of them that are more than competitive and can beat any team on their day. Good things ahead.

ultimately its all down to the players, they need to remember that playing football is a privilege and not a given due to a familiar surname and must be willing to sacrifice and everything in their powers to be successful. eg. make sure the diets right, stay away from outside distractions, learn the language of the country you're playing in ASAP

i think the key thing to take from the past 12 months, is the FA have realised they need to start providing more matches, camps and getting the relevant age groups together far more frequently. some of the wacky results the underage sides have had in recent times (especially against asian opposition) is due to not training/playing together more frequently - alot of the boys have no interaction with each other until the actual tournament. its very different to the asian sides who will plays lots of games, lots of camps and the players seem to know their teams mates and the coaches instructions like the back of their hands
