Thornton shows he's a speedster to watch after breaking Aussie A record in thumping win over Kiwis

By News / Wire

Paceman Henry Thornton claimed the best-ever figures for an Australia A side taking 7-39 to help bowl the team to a 108-run win over New Zealand A.

After the hosts were all out for 243 in Brisbane, Thornton rolled through the New Zealanders by taking the first seven wickets.

Called into the squad on the eve of the match, Thornton took three wickets with his first four balls and was twice on a hat-trick in the innings.

His victims included Tom Bruce and Cam Fletcher for first-ball ducks, while a third New Zealander in Dean Foxcroft was also out for nought.

Thornton’s figures are the second such time the 26-year-old has run through a team in elite cricket, having taken 5-3 for Adelaide against the Sydney Thunder in the BBL last year.

They also came in his first match for Australia A, having previously represented his country in U19s.

“I’m pretty speechless,” Thornton said.

“Dad was in the crowd and was going ballistic.

“I was speaking to Ryan Harris and I said I felt like I am really ready to go, I have had a huge pre-season.

“I have worked really hard with him on a few things (as South Australia bowling coach), especially in the white-ball space.

“It was such a bonus these games came at the right time.”

Earlier, Ben McDermott smashed 70 off 59 balls for Australia A to help set up the win.

Matt Renshaw also hit 43 and Josh Philippe 35 off 25 before Australia A collapsed from 2-170 to be all out for 243 in 44.1 overs.

The win gives Australia a 2-0 lead in the three-match series with the third game to be played in Brisbane on Friday.

Where is the cutoff? Once they play representative for their state?

Western Australian’s are always calling for more players from WA to be chosen in Australian teams . So if the team does well, that’s what you should have to put up with. A lot of the players playing for Australia from NSW are now past their best. Time for the other States to take up the slack & see how they do carrying the load .

Probably because the under 25’s are playing smash and grab, rather than building batting and bowling techniques in Shield. Anyone who can play a pull shot from outside off and chop on from shoulder height, like Inglis did last night batting at 3, certainly appears to be a product of ‘back yourself’, rather than cricket coaching technique, where some balls just have to be left alone, rather than premeditated. Coming into a scenario of 7 an over already being scored, a set batsman at one end and 40 odd overs to go, says the next generation is being short changed from coaching which doesn’t send a player with less than 10 ODI’s out there to build a five over base from, especially batting at four!

Yeah, must be hard, with 4 Test bowlers and another half dozen in the white ball squads coming from NSW touring constantly, or being rested for rotation or horses for courses purposes! A bit like the selectors taking all WA’s allrounders for white ball!

Mallett grew up near Chatswood Oval in Sydney, moved as a young boy to Perth where he attended Mt Lawley High School, and was in WA's State Squad at age 21. He, and Terry Jenner as well, then moved to SA.

Mallett is really an SA product, moved there as a child and went to school there.

Doesn’t quite explain the disparity between WA and SA producing top players.

They struggle because they have 6-7 players in the international sides most of the time. Cummins, Smith, Warner, Lyon, Starc, Hazlewood, Abbott, Zampa plus Khawaja another NSW product. Also, Ellis, Maddinson, Sangha among other contenders. Mind you, the next generation doesn’t seem to promise as many stars.

NSW has done alright out of WA, receiving- Simon Katich, Stuart MacGill, Ross Edwards, Beau Casson. While sending it- Paul Wilson, Bob Simpson, Adam Gilchrist, Chris Rogers, Matt Nicholson, and a half-dozen Shield players.

Trevor Chappell was only alright at a state level. If you look at WA, they are producing a lot of players for themselves. Soccer is much the same. Most of the players are from NSW & VIC.

It's a predictable outcome, given that we have only six first-class teams, while our States have vastly differing population levels. It's partly why NSW and Vic each provide 2 of the 8 sides (ie one-quarter of them) in the BBL and WBBL, as well as in each national youth championship. The only player that I can think of who went the other way is Trevor Chappell, after WSC.

That’s quite the list . The actual South Australian’s that play there can wear a ‘Where’s Wally striped shirt’. So you can tell them apart.

I heard that they’d like to build a replica of the Sydney Harbour Bridge somewhere near Adelaide, to make everyone that’s there feel at home.
