'Freo sure know how to lose them': Docker shocker as goalsneak requests trade to reigning premiers

By The Roar / Editor

Fremantle maintain goalsneak Lachie Schultz is a ‘required player’ after the 25-year old requested a shock trade to Collingwood.

Schultz dropped the first bombshell of the 2023 AFL Trade Period on Monday afternoon, with the small forward, who is contracted for 2024, reportedly keen to return to Victoria for family reasons.

According to reports, the request has blindsided the Dockers, who were in the process of working with his management on a two-year contract extension.

Hailing from country NSW, Schultz was taken with pick 57 in the 2018 national draft as a 20-year old after dominating for Williamstown in the VFL.

Delisted at the end of 2020 before being re-drafted as a rookie, he has since become an integral part of the Dockers’ forward line, kicking a career-best 33 goals in 2023 and in 2021 knocking back an offer from Hawthorn to re-sign with the club.

That two-year contract included triggers for a third, which Schultz, a dual Glendinning-Allan Medallist for best afield in the Western Derby, hit earlier this season to tie him to Fremantle until the end of 2024.

The Dockers stated their desire to keep Schultz, posting to social media that he is ‘a required player who still has a year to run on his contract’.

Complicating matters, though, is that Schultz becomes an unrestricted free agent at the end of next season, due to his previous delisting by the Dockers, meaning he could walk to the Magpies freely in 12 more months.

Schultz’s looming departure is the latest major blow for Fremantle after a poor season that saw them slump to 14th after a return to finals in 2022 for the first time in seven years.

The Dockers are also set to lose wingman Liam Henry, who is seeking a trade to St Kilda, while key defender Joel Hamling has departed to join Sydney as an unrestricted free agent.

At the end of 2022, the club also saw Blake Acres, Griffin Logue, Darcy Tucker, Rory Lobb and Lloyd Meek head elsewhere.

The player exodus quickly attracted the attention of Kane Cornes, with the controversial media pundit and former Port Adelaide great posting to X that ‘Freo sure know how to lose them’.

“Schultz ranked 1 at Fremantle for scoreboard impact. It’s a giant loss for a team not blessed with scoring options.”

The 25-year old’s arrival would further bolster the Pies’ arsenal of small forwards, which includes veteran Jamie Elliott, Norm Smith Medallist Bobby Hill, pressure player Beau McCreery and a host of others.

It would, however, once again threaten the spot of Jack Ginnivan, who was the subject of trade interest mid-season from rival clubs including Richmond and the Western Bulldogs before breaking back into the Magpies’ senior team late in the year, including for the grand final.

What’s with this “Donny” stuff? You seem really insecure with yourself when you need that to add power. Nice little gang you are trying to join; you, Bretto, Frodo…

Anyone who calls out Donny’s nonsense is “trolling” . He also called me a troll, for simply challenging his delusions. At the end of the day Freo are heading for the bottom 4 along with Geelong, and bleeding players like no other Club. I predict North will finish above Freo in 2024 …

I understand players leave every club - that is just part of the parcel of footy. But we’ve lost a few good ones - you can go back as far as Neale, Cerra (although that netted Amiss so i still consider it a net gain), but the ones that hurt are Acres and Logue last year and Schultz this year. A Henry type that goes for more opportunities is one thing, but Schultz is a key player. Sonny is getting on, Switta is more injury prone than Schultz and plays a different role further up the field, and Emmett is promising but has played 2 games. We all know it’s going to be Banfield that ends up in his position. I’m sorry I just don’t share your optimism on this one - I obviously rate Schultz higher than you do I guess?

It won’t be Banfield. Along with Sonny and Emmett, we have Switkowski (better than Schultz), Frederick and Sturt. Looks like #19 or low 20s from Collingwood. I’d grab that. We get nothing at the end of next year. Have a look at who’s leaving Melbourne, Essendon, Saints, Port, Pies…the “look” is common to all clubs. The only difference is the Freo pile-on that those without brains do.

We’ve done very well in the draft or with trades in these last 5 years. If Freo matched Brisbane’s offer, Freo probably would have had to part with Serong or Brayshaw after their draft contract expired or they wouldn’t have been able to renew Darcy, Ryan, Pearce, Cox. The salary cap would have reached its peak. So no, it doesn’t hurt. Be nice to have him but there are salary limits. We’d be a very old squad if we kept all of Neale, Hill, Weller, Langdon, Crozier, Hamling, Blakely, Hogan, Mayne. Trades have allowed Brayshaw, Serong, Amiss (via Cerra), Chapman, Clark, Jackson, Brodie, Aish…

Neale is the one that must hurt the most. Only if he stayed Don different circumstances may have resulted in retention of certain players & better team results. Lobbstar 10th in B&F in 22’ one of your leading goal kickers :stoked: sorely missed. (Don’t forget team balance)

Sorry, I have to disagree - he's a top 10 player for us and is our most reliable forward outside of Amiss and Walters. I'm not convinced we do have great cover for him. Emmett does look promising but has played 2 games, Schultz is a proven footballer and personally I'd like both of them in the same forward line instead of someone like Banfield. I don't want 'overs' for him - I'd like us to start keeping quality players. It isn't a good look to see so many walk out the door.

Emmett slips straight in. In our dead patch that rolled us out of finals contention, Schultz went missing a lot. Came good at the end when we played the top 4 and almost beat them all. We have good, solid cover for him and we lose him next year for nothing. We'll get overs for him now...but it sounds like he might be staying anyway.

"Engaging" involves people interacting; you know, responses, likes, interchange of ideas. That's not coming from you or the other bloke. I think you are on the wrong site for what you'retrying to do.

So when you speak total rubbish you are engaging in footy conversation, but when you are called out on it you are being trolled. Thin skinned much? From now on I'll refrain from commenting on your posts and take them as satire.

Of your list of outs, only 5 would be regular players. They products of those in are over 12 regular first 23 players when you count current trades and draftees from those trade. Each of those young draftees you have mentioned have extended to 2025 or beyond. You will find every club in the AFL will have lost 14 players or more over the past 6 years. Especially when you start counting retired or deceased players. Port Adelaide, alone, has at least 4 players trading out (Clurey, Duursma, Lycett, Fantasia) That’s 24 in 6 years.

Yep. It's worse than that. They (Cornes and Brad Johnson) are suggesting McCreery AND a FIRST rounder. The thinking of the media...and the trolls; when talking about Freo's forwards last year, Schultz was considered to be nothing. Now he's leaving, it's considered to be the height of devastation for Freo. Some are just given to that line of thinking drivel.

When Shultz was at Freo he was the best small forward in the league, but if he moves to Collingwood he's not as good a Ginnivan? Ok then.
