Sheffield Shield Round 5 Wrap: Who made their case for a Test spot?

By Gibbo / Roar Pro

Round 5 had two tricky wickets, a few epic collapses and provided further proof that modern batters struggle to grind out long innings. Here’s the wrap of the round.

Western Australia vs South Australia

3 Sentence Summary: Was there a wicket on the square or did the curators just cut the middle of the square slightly shorter than the rest of the grass? This game had it all! With no totals over 215, the ball dominated, but Western Australia, the best side in the competition, chased 201 on a tricky surface and won by two wickets.

Sports opinion delivered daily

Who pushed Test claims? Nathan McAndrew continues to push his case for a Test recall. Unfortunately for him, he is down the pecking order a fair way, but nonetheless, both his bowling and his batting have taken a big leap this season. He is well on his way to becoming a genuine all-rounder.

Who did not push Test claims? Jake Lehmann may not lack any of the aggressiveness of his father, but he has not yet matched his father’s output. It is unfair to compare Jake to Darren, but he will be hoping that, like his father, he scores huge runs to become entrenched in the Australian side at a later age.

Victoria vs Queensland

3 Sentence Summary: Do you think Usman Khawaja will choose to bowl first on a pitch that favours batting again, especially with an understrength side? Twice in two games, Queensland has won the toss and bowled, but it has not paid off for them. Victoria’s young attack is building nicely into a formidable Shield attack.

Who Pushed Test Claims? Scott Boland has timed his run into the Test summer to perfection. Eight wickets in this match re-establishes his place as the fourth seamer picked, if there ever was a doubt. The West Indian and Pakistani batters stand little chance when Boland is in this kind of form.

Who Did Not Push Test Claims? As a Queenslander, it pains me to see the entire Queensland team perform so poorly. However, there are issues with their batting lineup with experienced players like Matt Renshaw and Khawaja throwing away promising starts.

When your two best bowlers are missing, it does make it hard to win games, but it is the batting, not the bowling, that is the main cause for concern.

Tasmania vs New South Wales

3 Sentence Summary: Tasmania dominated this game from the outset, making a big score on a reasonably benign pitch. Three tons from Tasmania’s lower middle order anchored the score, and New South Wales could not respond to that.

Despite all the improvements from the last round, New South Wales will be looking to build consistency in their performance.

Who Pushed Test Claims? Is there much more to be said about Beau Webster? He does it all with the ball, the bat and in the field. Unfortunately for him, he is stuck behind at least Cameron Green, Mitch Marsh, Michael Neser and Aaron Hardie in the pecking order.

However, if his purple patch continues, maybe he will leapfrog many of those players to make it into the Test side.

Who Did Not Push Test Claims? Chris Tremain bowled his heart out this game but with little reward. Two wickets is a fine outcome, but unfortunately for him, he would have wanted to have taken a few more to keep the pressure on his one-time teammate Boland.

Best XI across the first round

How this is selected. This looks at the best players in each position and fits them in where appropriate. Players can be moved down a rung in the batting order from where they normally bat, but they cannot move up. For example, Matthew Renshaw could open or bat at 3, but since he did not make runs in the middle order, he would not be eligible to bat in the middle order. The objective of this is to track the consistency across the Shield season. At least one player from each side should be selected unless one team utterly dominated that round.

Marcus Harris
Bryce Street
Matthew Gilkes
Peter Handscomb
Jake Doran
Beau Webster
Will Sutherland
Ben Manenti
Fergus O’Neill
Liam Guthrie
Scott Boland

Stay tuned for Round 4!

Also thanks from me. I think WA fought hard to win on a bowlers wicket against what is becoming a decent attack, rather than SA lose. The WACA pitch(es) is/ are becoming spicy.

I'm a big fan of O'Neill and Perry for the Vics. O'Neill sitting on 13 FC matches for 38 wkts at 24.5 (2x4wI); plus a 70* and 385 runs at 27.5. And still a couple of months shy of turning 23. Perry up now to 33 FC matches, 91 wkts at 29.97 (7x4wI and 1x5wI) and a HS 75 with 792 at 20.3 (and some very, very good night watchman efforts.....and a screamer catch in the cordon last match). Along with Buckingham. A good kid from just down the road from me - (Bundoora). Approaching 24 - similar age to Perry, 14 FC matches for 47 wkts at 30.29. 2x4wI and 2x5wI. Johnson is interesting - remember - he's rising 28 and only has 4 first class matches to his credit. He's made his way to white ball internationals but has had recent injuries including a hammy back in Sept. I don't actually see him as a test 'able' bowler. He might be a bit Tait-like in that respect.

Wonderful, but depressing, insight. Thanks.

I've seen the grade cricket scores. There really aren't many others who could do better than these guys, unfortunately. I follow grade each week as I usually need some form of decent cricket to follow after my dismal club showings. Stuart Clark is still going around in the 4th Grade of Sydney Premier Cricket playing with his son. He captains and takes wickets for Sutherland too! Peter Forrest is still mediocre and is still playing for Manly (I think or maybe Northern Districts). There are a few others going around like that who're older guys playing grade in Sydney who are still fairly average players. There are some exciting up-and-coming youngsters (I've played with a few of them), but they'll inevitably get lost in the "system" and their returns will taper off. It's the system that's the issue, not the players themselves. Blake Macdonald has been one of the best Grade cricketers for a few years. Let's give him a chance. Matt Gilkes seems to have found his niche at the Shield level after many years.

Good pickup, Micko! No, it was meant to say "selection".

Joe Jo was just a plodder who played a lot. Leagues behind Paris. Not even the same style of bowler.

Except Johnson is older than Richardson and Morris.

Joe Angel was great for WA. Also totally useless when he bowled for Australia. You would have loved him as a player.

But he’s fit. Forever injured except when he’s not. Paris has never been a failure. He has had chronic injuries but always succeeded. Still does. No one, since Adam Dale, swings the ball like he does.

Didn’t say anything about Richardson being old. He’s forever injured! Paris is getting on for a pace bowler & was a miserable failure before. Give him a big miss!

How old do you think Richardson is? You must be thinking of Kane.

Richardson is forever injured . So puts a huge question mark against his name . I think the plan is to put Morris in this summer? See how that goes ? Better to put someone younger with real potential in , that can build into the role. Rather than some veterans, that’ll again need replacing in a couple of seasons . Paris has been tried before & was a miserable failure. Seems like a backwards step, to me.. I’d rather put in a Will Sutherland type than Paris.

I mentioned him in my last wrap, but I thought that Matt Gilkes is also starting to come into his own. You are correct, however. I'd love to see what he does in the future.

Depends on the bowler and the near future. I don’t think that guys like Boland (34) or Neser (33) are the future, but there are some guys like Paris (31) and even Tremain (32) that might have another 3-4 years to give to the Test circuit. In that time, there are plenty of Tests to be played for which they could be selected. Granted, it’s not Jhye Richardson (26) or Lance Morris (24), but there aren’t that many young bowlers outside of Richardson and Morris who are seasoned enough to play Tests yet. Jordan Buckingham and Spencer Johnson need a couple more years of consistency in the Shield first.

I'm struggling with NSW's selection policy. I understand there were some injury decisions that prevented the successful XI from the WA game from being replicated against Tasmania but the faces everywhere change from match to match to my eyes.

No mention of young Ollie Davies? One of the few bright spots in the NSW side at the moment, with a century last game and two 60s this time around. He's only played three innings and is somehow our highest runscorer by a margin of 80-odd.

For any future test , or international limited over considerations. Shouldn’t the well over 30 years old bowlers who aren’t currently playing for Australia, have a line put through their names ? There’s not much point in replacing well over 30 years old bowlers , with well over 30 years old bowlers.
