Have you played baseball?
The nuances are there but apart from that the thing I like about baseball and prefer over other winter sports is how consistent it is. There have been tweaks recently introduced which have enhanced the experience but left the traditions in place and in some instances improved on the way the game has developed along power lines like cricket.
The modern player is the same as the old timer. If Babe Ruth came back now he’d pick up a bat and go to work like it was 1927. He wouldn’t dominate like he did but it is the same game.
If Don Bradman came back and went out to bat he wouldn’t be able to lift the thing he has to bat with now!

Cricket's long-standing battle between bat and ball: Is the IPL money-driven 'show' ruining the contest of the game?

It’s already a circus. The change is irrevocable, all we can do is tweak it for the devotees of the red ball game.
It isn’t a total demise but it’s simply increasingly difficult to maintain any first class structures.

Gee Qld left him out of the contracted squad and retained Swepson!
Of the Australian qualified leggies I argued Alana King the best available in the country. When I announced that to mates of mine none would disagree with that and I rate Kuhnemann a better prospect than poor Mitch.

'I'm excited to challenge myself': Test spinner turns to a new state in search of greater opportunities

Contract the bowlers, to manage workloads, and going by recent form, increase the workload, release all the batsmen to work some consistent form in competitive cricket I say!

Forgotten opener, WA veterans snubbed in central contract shake-up as CA name 23-player list

Adelaide used to have the Australia Day test but in this current climate no one would suggest promoting a blockbuster on January 26th.

It’s just too tricky.

Everybody has an agenda.

Australian cricket 2024-25 schedule CONFIRMED: Perth usurps Gabba 'fortress' for opening Test against India

Fat chance Melbourne will ever lose that big ticket Boxing Day test.

Australian cricket 2024-25 schedule CONFIRMED: Perth usurps Gabba 'fortress' for opening Test against India

I find it remarkable that India swallowed this itinerary.
Have they dropped some of their insularity by agreeing to Perth and a pink ball Test in Adelaide? Are they cocky to think they don’t have to dictate the venues any more
Do they understand the disgraceful pressure WA politicians placed on CA earlier when they moaned about hosting a less-than-stellar nation?
Not begrudging these venues their good fortune though. Traditional tours used to allow touring sides a proper tour across the country taking in state sides and country sides. They were good opportunities to see the sides without having to necessarily schedule a full Test. But I am dreaming aren’t I?

That was pretty comprehensive in all facets of the game.

Congratulations to the Sandgroper domestic double three-peat dynasty.

There. I think I’ve exhausted my clichés.

Unstoppable WA wallop Tassie to complete unprecedented 'triple double' of Shield and one-day titles

I did not know the ACB is populated with regime appointees.
I would never endorse engagement directly with the bearded crackpots.
In which case arguably we could also apply this across the boards in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe… even India. Political appointments abound. Rumours substantiated or otherwise of malfeasance.
Sadly blanket sanctions do nothing to the question of how can Afghan women (granted, outside of the country’s borders) can have a game of cricket.

'Succumbing to political influences': Afghanistan rips into Cricket Australia after abandoning tour

BUT, for Nelson to reach those heights he was fast-tracked. The Royal Navy identified his outstanding qualities at a tender age so he was the youngest post Captain in the service.
We lack the pathways and talent identification in the foundling stages.
Amongst other deficiencies.
Like money.

Set up to fail: The gaping hole in Aussie Super Rugby coaching CVs - with one clear exception

Sheesh, I’m with you here Don.
I never thought a discussion on female Afghani cricket participation got into geopolitics.

'Succumbing to political influences': Afghanistan rips into Cricket Australia after abandoning tour

I’m not saying engaging the regime – the cricket administrators of the world don’t have to deal with the incumbent government. No way. Leave diplomacy to the diplomats!
I meant engage with ACB and discuss ways something can be implemented for female participation perhaps in the Afghan diaspora.

'Succumbing to political influences': Afghanistan rips into Cricket Australia after abandoning tour

What?
And abandon any dialogue with the ACB? Revoke full member status sounds retrograde to me instead of some official body working with them in bringing the women into the fold.

I can’t help but feeling as an outsider you have a clarity in thought on Australian Rugby like no other Harry.
The mention of Eddie Jones in your opening paragraph soured this read for me though.

Joe Schmidt's search for a 'cold-hearted bastard' - and the issue he'll lose most sleep over

Precisely.
It would take leadership and vision, qualities sadly lacking with this sporting body.

Australia postpone Afghanistan series again due to 'conditions for women and girls getting worse'

Better still, why not sponsor Afghan cricket for the women.
Melbourne Victory have the Afghan women’s football side playing in their youth league, a great gesture.
If there’s any women in the Afghan diaspora with the inclination then funds can be channelled into some sort of meaningful program.

Australia postpone Afghanistan series again due to 'conditions for women and girls getting worse'

Thanks for the moral leadership CA.

The Dean Jones example that Australian selectors must avoid in regenerating ageing Test squad

But lately, how much credence do the selectors take with Shield form?

The Dean Jones example that Australian selectors must avoid in regenerating ageing Test squad

The questions about the side won’t be solved till next summer with no fixtures for the national team scheduled.
Is there any Australia A fixtures over the winter? If not why not organise some FC cricket overseas and plonk Head in as captain if he isn’t county-engaged, Smith and any other players of interest not otherwise engaged. Doesn’t have to be a long tour.
It would give everyone more of a form guide.

For Jorgenson it would have been so much more convenient to bail after the Lions, if that is the way he is inclined.
To paraphrase Steve Miller, “Go on, take the money and run”
So much to consider for the young bloke and I think about the dirty dealing between player managers and the contenders bidding for his flesh.
After the Sualii saga I really don’t want to see Phil Gould’s mug on rugby screens again and an emotional tug-of-war between codes for playing talent..

Exclusive: NRL powerhouse set sights on Wallaby-in-waiting after ex-All Blacks boss snags Roosters star Manu

I had a conversation during the Sydney Olympics with an Indian colleague and asked him about hockey and he said they dominated before astroturf.
When they went to artificial surfaces the Indian and Pakistani players lost their advantages in skilful stickwork, head above the ball on dodgy decks. It became a power game. Astroturf is expensive too prohibiting development.
The Olympic finals involved Australia v Pakistan (bronze medal playoff), and the Dutch v South Korea for the gold.
The Dutch and Australian sides were massive men. No kidding the Dutch 11 could mix it with an NRL side from their physiques. The Asian sides were little people by comparison and the results showed. Australia bronze, South Korea silver and the Netherlands gold.

'Nothing but a horses-for-courses strategy': Why England had to turn to Bazball because of its player pool

When have you seen Rohit bowling?

Every Aussie rated from second Test and series vs New Zealand: Heroic Hazlewood, clutch Carey, sub-par Smith

Plus, I get cricket is THE only game in town. Everything else pales in comparison. It’s not just about money.
A mate of mine who follows world football leagues closely mentioned the money in Indian football – yet it registers a blip.
I’d wager if an Indian athlete sprung up and won an Olympic gold there would be intense interest for a brief period and then nothing. The oxygen gets sucked out of everything else.

'Nothing but a horses-for-courses strategy': Why England had to turn to Bazball because of its player pool

Interesting.
You’d think India would have gone the same way with their embrace of the 20 over giggle, yet they can still produce Pujara who was appreciated by teammates and the public (even if he grated some for his lack of pyrotechnics).
How come India’s bowlers can still do the job with the red ball?
Is it the sheer breadth of playing resources to draw on?
