The 2020 Brownlow Medal was won by Lachie Neale, who collected 31 votes to finish ten ahead of Travis Boak in second.
Preview follows
Brisbane’s Lachie Neale enters tonight’s count as the hot favourite to pick up the medal for the first time. He’s had an outstanding 2020 – his second season with the club – and looks head and shoulders above the rest of the pack coming into this evening.
Recent winners Nat Fyfe and Tom Mitchell will struggle to get close, although there has been some support around some other potential first-time winners.
Former Port Adelaide captain Travis Boak is considered the next-most likely after his stunning renaissance this season, but does risk losing votes to teammates Ollie Wines, Tom Rockliff, Robbie Gray and even Charlie Dixon.
Melbourne midfielder Christian Petracca is also considered a chance. He broke out in a big way this season and barely had a bad game, but an inconsistent year by the Demons will probably see him lose votes to players on victorious sides a bit too often.
Patrick Dangerfield, Dustin Martin and Jack Steele are the other players who’ve had serious money put on them, but they probably haven’t quite had the seasons capable of taking out the medal.
As always, the mark of the year and goal of the year honours are also awarded this evening.
Prediction
It’d be a brave man to bet against Lachie Neale tonight and I’m erring on the side of caution.
I’m predicting Ian Hill of Greater Western Sydney to take mark of the year ahead of Charlie Cameron and Sam Walsh, while Josh Daicos is my pick for goal of the year ahead of Jack Newnes and Patrick Cripps.

It was a straight jump in the air then he got hit afterwards. It was not spectacular. Players do that all the time, the way he fell made it look better then the marks that are taken all the time. That’s the mark that’s gonna go in the highlight videos of all marks of the year and it will look ridiculous by comparison.

Mark of the year shows afl prioritize bang and crash over athletic ism . poor choice considering skills are the show.

31 in 17 games equates to 40 in a 22 game season, albeit no one would haave ever played so many games either at home or a nuetral venue

Phenomenal effort from Neale to collect 31 votes in a 17-game season. For reference, the last few vote totals by winners have been; 2019 - 33 (Nat Fyfe) 2018 - 28 (Tom Mitchell) 2017 - 36 (Dustin Martin) 2016 - 35 (Patrick Dangerfield) 2015 - 31 (Nat Fyfe) 2014 - 26 (Matt Priddis) 2013 - 28 (Gary Ablett Jr.)

Just one more vote for Neale means he at least earns a tied Brownlow, but two means it's his and his alone. I'd be stunned if he doesn't at least get two for his Round 16 effort against St Kilda. He and Zorko should be the top two. He won't poll in Round 17 and, interestingly, might not feature in Round 18 either. That opens the door for Petracca. He should get three votes in Round 18, but needs to hope he can get the three ahead of Steven May in Round 17 and hope he miraculously polls three in Round 16's loss to Fremantle.

Neale polls no votes! He's got it all wrapped up, but we've still got to count the last three rounds.

The winning margin, which beat fellow Tiger and dual Brownlow medallist Roy Wright's 10-vote triumph in 1954, gave weight to Hall of Famer Leigh Matthews' claim Martin's was the best individual season ever.

Round 15 will probably be the clincher. Neale is likely to poll at least two votes against the Magpies, whereas Petracca definitely won't (Melbourne lost to Sydney), while Boak and Steele had the bye.
