Brisbane and Port Adelaide have a home preliminary final on the line when they lock horns at the Gabba for the last match of finals week one. Join The Roar for live scores from 7:25pm (AEST).
The goal has been achieved for the Lions, with home ground advantage in the finals secured and the daunting thought of travelling north to the Gabba prominent in the minds of the other teams. The ground is simply a 19th man and one at which the home side rarely loses.
Port head there after a 17-win season that saw them finish third on the AFL ladder, but they will need to produce an almost perfect performance to win against a team with serious flag aspirations.
Team news sees the Lions fit and healthy, with Lincoln McCarthy back into the side as Jarrod Lyons makes way. Port have Todd Marshall and Scott Lycett back into the 22, a boost for the big men stocks, with Travis Boak likely to be the sub.
Prediction
All the talk will be of home ground advantage, and that is indeed real. However, Port will be seeking a performance for the ages on the road and a spot in the final four.
Can they do it? Of course they can. 2023 has seen them display newfound resilience, and as the young stars develop into seasoned players, no team can dismiss them.
However, the Lions are simply brilliant on their home deck and as long as they arrive with the intensity required and avoid poor kicking from Joe Daniher and Eric Hipwood up front, they should have the edge in what looks a terrific encounter on paper.

Unfortunately, Port are frail in the backline. If they can find a rookie with fire and strength who can help with metres gained, they have a good chance. An all out attack via the corridor will be their best option, and putting Boak at centre bounces in the first two quarters might lift the others . They myst not regress to going wide.. they will.be buried. I love Boak’s work ethic. he’s loved by his team mates.

He's probably got a job for life an assistant coach anyway.

I guess we'll never know, but both times they played each other, the home team won by 50 points. It's the best path to the grand final, put it that way. I'm disappointed too but there's another chance next weekend.

Realistically will start as favourites, but hard to see them winning any game after tonight.

Powers chances against the Giants next week ?

Let's not pretend Port would have been any chance at home. It might have been five goals rather than eight, but that's all.

Played the worst team in the Top 8 at home, so wouldn't be reading too much into tonight. Carlton or Melbourne will actually give them a contest in the prelim.

This aged well.

See I don’t think Ben Rutten can’t coach it’s more that he can’t coach Essendon. I think he needs to improve his man management and he needs to stop trying to be everyone’s friend

That's better...vent! Get it out of your system.

Well the Lions take the points in the first week of finals for the most impressive performance. Surely this year they will make the last week of September.
