Carlton returns to its traditional home, as they host a promising Essendon outfit in both teams’ first pre-season outing at Ikon Park. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 6:40pm (AEDT).
Footy’s back, back again! Not discounting the rapidly improving AFLW, it’s been a long time since we’ve seen the ball been bounced and the league’s legion of talent on display (no, AFLX does not count). But, tonight, Aussie rules is back (disclaimer: in pre-season form).
On show on this Thursday evening are last year’s wooden spooners, Carlton, and eleventh placers Essendon. It’s integral to remember, though, that last year’s results have no barring on this season’s, and it’s preseason: optimal time for optimism.
In that vein, both teams have plenty of reasons for optimism. Essendon’s 2018 season was decent but ultimately unrewarding, while Carlton will be hoping to bounce back well from a poor 2018 campaign.
The JLT Series is a good time to introduce new players to fans, and both clubs are doing just that. Dylan Shiel, draftee Tom Jok and former Docker Zac Clarke are making their debuts for Essendon, while Carlton have six debutants in Michael Gibbons, Hugh Goddard, Mitch McGovern, Nic Newman, Will Setterfield and number one draft pick Sam Walsh.
Carlton’s upcoming campaign has been hamstrung by multiple injuries though – co-captain Sam Docherty and young gun Jarrod Pickett are among a number of players ruled out for long periods.
Essendon, too, won’t have Cale Hooker or Orazio Fantasia on display – with the club taking the conservative approach to both men.
The combined six players from both teams who participated in last Friday’s AFLX tournament have all been named for this clash.
Prediction
It’s difficult to predict JLT clashes, due to the natural unpredictability of the sides. Both teams will be eager to impress – none more so than Carlton, given the predictions of a poor 2019, their increasing injury crisis and the nostalgia of playing at their historical home.
But Essendon’s named an arguably stronger side and, under pressure themselves to aim high this season, should pull off a victory here. The margin though? Who knows. I’ll go four or so goals.

Curnow got cramp, I am confident if it was round 1 he would have come back. As for the clearances, the midfield the blues are putting together will win the clearances more often than not, Cripps, Setterfield, Dow and SPS (even Fisher and Murphy) are all pretty good at the stoppages. Them combined with McKay, Curnow and McGivern will make the blues pretty denagerous in the 6-6-6 set up.

Essendon played 3 more players in that heat they were always going to finish stronger. Practice game result doesn't mean much always just focus on individuals, fitness and how team gels. As a Blues supporter very happy.

Curnow got injured and Gov still had about 60% TOG. Besides, with the lopsided midfield lineups clearances were 50-37 Carlton’s way (21-9 from the centre). Doesn’t really matter who’s up forward with those numbers!

Did the Blues tire or did the Bombers step up. Maybe both. The Blues have found a couple of really good new players and with others developing will be a better team in 2019. The Bombers will be pleased with the development of Ridley who is a very impressive. He's only played 3 AFL games but looks to add to that this year. May even challenge Francis for a spot in the team. Jok seems ok and could develop but may need a few more VFL games before he's ready to step up. Essendon will be better next game with the inclusions of Bellchambers, Hooker, Fantasia, Myers and Stewart. There could be a contest between McKernan, Clarke and Stewart for one position and a few other positions competing for some backline spots. Ambrose, Long and Hartley surely have to go out as they are not in the same space as their competitors. The Bombers may make the 8 but could be in a battle with a few other battler teams. The Blues, on tonights performance will win a few more games than I have been estimating but will wait and see how they go in Round 2 of the JLT. A good night with a few surprises and I learned quite a bit about both teams potential.

Nice to get a glimpse of the young midfield and i think the new boys Walsh and Setterfield will fit in nicely and help bring better depth and skill. Gibson showed why he deserves his opportunity sand Cunningham was the same. Talls a little out of synch and some good signs downback. In a nutshell blues have alot of work to do and the playing group i think knows it. Looking forward to watching more.

My standard response to any JLT game this year will be "did anyone see WCE get pumped by Freo last year?"

Charlie Curnow was treated pretty conservatively too, as was McGovern

It explains the strong finish.

No, it's because they were being conservative. Heppell, Smith and Merrett all had niggles. More on the bench doesn't explain subbing out your best players while giving fringe guys more game time.

That’s because you had 3 more in the bench JamesH

Mixed feelings about that. I'm a bit disappointed that the Bombers didn't take it more seriously but they were obviously being conservative with their key players. Time on ground for Essendon's four best mids says it all really: Shiel - 51% Smith - 48% Heppell - 39% Merrett - 36% On the plus side, McGrath, Stringer and Ridley were lively while Clarke and Jok performed well enough in their first hitouts.

Carlton have poached a surprise 9 point victory against rivals Essendon, with the Blues holding off a fast finishing opposition in the opener of the 2019 JLT Series. The first quarter was a speedy, free-flowing, exciting affair, with both sides adding a fair few goals. Ultimately Essendon’s best quarter of the clash, the visitors sent through four goals before their first blemish, whilst the Blues had more opportunities but were a little more inaccurate. With the Blues’ young brigade providing strong midfield support, the hosts were keen to impress at their traditional ground, and it was difficult to disagree as the first break arrived. The Blues expanded their lead throughout the second stanza, as the Dons accuracy disappeared and the Blues newfound attacking mantra emerged. They booted two goals through skipper Cripps and club debutant Mitch McGovern, and frustrated the poor Dons - who became their own worse enemy with uncharacteristic errors in play and going for goal. The Blues head into the half with a helluva lot of confidence, and the all important 19 point lead. The third term was even better for the Blues and simultaneously more impressive from a Essendon point of view. The Blues booted a half dozen more majors, with the Dons adding four of their own as they increased in confidence. Confidence meant nought, though, as Carlton’s early lead combined with their sensational third quarter meant they held a strong lead as the clash barrelled towards its final quarter. A quarter is a long time in football though, and that certainly rang true in tonight’s finale. Essendon have the Blues’ faithful a panic attack as they sent through five straight goals, before goals to Carlton youngsters David Cunningham and Harry McKay steadied the ship, and allowed the hosts to run out surprise victors. Carlton's young brigade of Sam Walsh, Zac Fisher and Paddy Dow all put in excellent performances (Walsh in particular), whilst newly minted captain Patrick Cripps was instrumental in leading the club to victory. David Cunningham and rookie Michael Gibbons booted three goals apiece. Andrew McGrath, Jordan Ridley and Adam Saad accumulated the most of the football for the Bombers, whilst Jake Stringer and Mitch Brown were in fine form with a trio of goals each. Carlton face Collingwood in ten days time for their second pre season clash, whilst Essendon face Geelong next Thursday. Carlton: 15.10 (100) Essendon: 14.7 (91)

Innocuous collision, I believe. I think Essendon's being overtly cautious.

GOAL ESSENDON Jayden Leverte with a late goal for the Dons, pegging them back to 9 points. I'd hazard a guess it's too little, too late though, as they're less than 90 seconds left in tonight's clash. Carlton: 15.10 (100) Essendon: 14.7 (91)

Is Dylan Shiel ok? Apparently he is off the ground currently. Is it anything serious?
