The Geelong Cats will be keen to rebound from last week’s thumping loss when they take on the Essendon Bombers at their GMHBA fortress. Tune into events from the Cattery with live scores on The Roar from 7:50pm (AEST).

The footy gods giveth, and the footy gods taketh away. After a Gary Rohan goal after the siren saw the Cats pip the Western Bulldogs in a Round 14 thriller, they crashed back to earth last week with a thumping loss to another premiership contender in Brisbane.

Twin towers Tom Hawkins and Jeremy Cameron were ineffectual, star backman Tom Stewart was well beaten by Charlie Cameron, and Patrick Dangerfield continues to look below his best since returning from an ankle injury. Currently sitting fifth on percentage, the Cats aren’t yet in a position where they can afford to ride out a form slump.

The Bombers were gallant in defeat to ladder-leaders Melbourne last week, the 11-point loss arguably as impressive as many of the recent wins they’ve had under new coach Ben Rutten. Sitting 11th with a 6-8 record, the Dons might still be the best side out of the eight – but they’ll likely need to upset the Cats to keep September hopes alive.

Remarkably, the Bombers have not visited GMHBA Stadium since way back in 1993, or won at the ground since 1990. Only Dyson Heppell, Cale Hooker and Michael Hurley of currently listed Dons were even born the last time the red and black made the trip down the highway.

Dangerfield is more of that "lift the team onto the shoulders and carry across the line" type player. Hoping he can be fully fit and back to his best for september, because the cats seem to need that sort of player at the present moment.

Yep against a young inexperience team. Where was he last week when Brisbane had the Cats by the scruff of the neck? As for Danger- yep a lot better last night. My comment about waste the footy more a generic discussion point rather than an individual game observation.

I love cats winning at the sardine can get there confidence up then watch there old legs get run off feet at the g

And still not win games. Stats don’t matter without premiership points.

It’s a team game cat. Zach Merrett and Darcy parish are probably the most solid one two punch of any midfield in the competition. You can put the clamps on one but the other will get off of the chain

All the hate for two metre Peter. He never was the key forward solution. Yeah he’s a bit of a down hill skier and he’s not great but he’s been serviceable for the bombers this year

And yet with all those stats still hasn’t actually put a team in his back and led them to a win. That’s what the true superstars do. Maybe he’ll get there eventually but he’s not there now.

Jezza is who got the Cats going when they were 25 down after the first quarter. Three of the first four goals Geelong kicked were Cameron’s including the only one in the first. That’s not exactly ‘front running’. Danger’s 75% DE not enough last night?

The Cats were very professional. I was always worried about how 2 consecutive 6 day turnarounds would affect our young players — Cox, Jones and Perkins. I am happy with 2 metre Peter, he strikes me as a confidence player who needs a few consecutive games. The wet conditions last night didn’t help him. He provides cover in the ruck for either Drapr or Phillips. I feel sorry for Phillips, he played some good games in Drapr’s absence but his body doesn’t hold up — 9 years for 50 games, life is tough in the ruck.

The one rebirther will be gone until Next year, unless you sneak into the eight or beat the Cats. :silly:

Solid win by the Cats. Bombers didn't help themselves in the 1st half. The big forward target is probably still a work in progress. I like others not convinced 2 Metre Peter is the solution. But got a good group of kids. I'm sure supporters will have some more positive times ahead of them. Cats doing enough without being super impressive. Jezza looked good early. He does come across to me though as guy who's a good front runner. Not sure he's a bloke who's going to grit the teeth and put the boys on his back when under pump. Danger started to look more like Danger last night. Still wastes alot of footy for my liking. Like the look of Close, he's good!

Just rewatching Cats second quarter. I know it’s just Bombers but Cats were superb. 8 sleek goals on very slippery conditions. You’ve got two weeks. Need to go to training as an auxiliary.

2 metre Peter has reached his ceiling. I’m glad the Pies didn’t have space to go for him. The Bombers started so well and got me sucked in but ultimately they sit 6-9 and are one of the worst sides in the competition for conceding score. Their defensive strategies or personnel are suspect. Credit to them though on where they are after losing players last year and picking up some good kids but they are a way off the best sides for a couple of years yet.

Chuck, i am hoping you will do another piece rating Essendon players out of ten (or whatever figure you choose) and what are there strengths and weaknesses, who should develop into good players, and who should get the flick or not be relied upon.
