Having lost consecutive games for the first time under Mark McVeigh, GWS will be aiming to return to the winners’ list when they host Hawthorn today. Join The Roar for live scores and rolling coverage from 3:20pm (AEST).
The Giants have become one of the most watchable teams in the game since McVeigh took over from Leon Cameron, but that hasn’t stopped them suffering consecutive defeats to finals hopefuls the Western Bulldogs and Collingwood.
Despite four goals from Jesse Hogan, the Giants simply couldn’t cope with the Magpies’ midfield dominance last week, with only a deadly accurate 12.5 scoreline keeping the margin as close as 11 points.
Ruckman Matt Flynn makes a welcome return from illness, but number one man Braydon Preuss hasn’t overcome his ankle injury yet.
The Hawks have made great strides under Sam Mitchell, and are clearly a better side than their 4-10 win-loss record.
They have claimed victories over top-four contenders Geelong and Brisbane this year, while losing narrowly to Melbourne, Carlton, Collingwood and Fremantle. Indeed, their 42-point loss to the Bulldogs last week was one of their few big defeats for the year.
Spearhead Jack Gunston is a welcome inclusion after being sidelined with an ankle problem, while Mitchell has made a big statement at the selection table, dropping veteran – and triple-premiership teammate – Liam Shiels.

Glad we got a win and kept the Hawks from breaking their duck. Brave effort for everyone who went. It is not weather for going outside

Low impact. Kelly wasn't affected at all.

Fair point but this really felt like a genuine nadir even by his standards

He just talked about the top 8 and bottom 8 teams. Forgetting that there's been 18 teams for a decade now.
