Hawthorn return to Tasmania, the scene of their sole victory this season, to take on the red-hot Adelaide. Join The Roar for live scores from 1:10pm (AEST).
The Hawks defeated North Melbourne in Launceston in Round 3, but aside from that, it has been a difficult start to the season under Sam Mitchell. Last week’s heartbreaking loss to GWS was their fourth in five matches, and sees the Hawks last on the ladder.
The Crows started out the 2023 season slow, taking two losses in their fist two rounds, but since then they’ve found their stride and managed to get on to a three game winning streak that they will be looking to keep alive and extend to four after their matchup with the Hawks.
They’ve played a strong brand of football that has resulted in an offensive explosion their last three rounds, booting scores of 110-plus in each of their last three games while also showing strong defensive capacity as no opponent has scored more than 90 against them in the same stretch.
The Adelaide Crows will loom as a tough matchup on the calendars of all their future opponents if they can keep up this form and style of football that has seen them become a team headed in a positive direction. The Hawks meanwhile are a team heading in what seems to be a decidedly downward direction, at least for this year.
Hawthorn were quite often the wooden spooners in the pre-season predictions, and five rounds into the season not much has changed to make us think those predictions were wrong. Their mass exodus of experience on the team list has shown on the field, their only win was a grudge match against their former coach and his new team. The plus side going into this week is that threat sole win also came at UTAS Stadium.
The Hawks have looked good in flashes, but have shown a remarkable inconsistency in maintaining their good play, and have also had much lower lows than their highs have been. Their performance against Sydney still lingers in the memory as astonishingly uninspired and with the intensity of a training drill.
The Hawks are undeniably ‘tanking’ this year, and with that comes those kinds of performances. It will undoubtedly be a long year for Hawthorn and their fans, but they will still be looking to put in performances that show progress towards becoming a team that may be more competitive next year.
It also goes without saying that in a season starved of victory, the rare triumphs that do come will be appreciated in the clubhouse and amongst their fans with even greater enthusiasm.
Adelaide have named an unchanged team for their trip to Launceston, while the Hawks have omitted Lloyd Meek and rested Josh Ward. Max Lynch slots into the team into Meek’s vacated ruck position.

It's still 2 winnable games that the Hawks couldn't close out due to not sticking to the game plan that got them back in the game. I didn't say anything negative apart from the last 5 minutes. You shouldn't generalise, l have seen plenty of irate Hawthorn fans comments regarding letting that happen two weeks in a row. You support the club how you feel and l will do the same, l don't need to be told how to think or feel. I don't sugarcoat, l speak my mind, I'm passionate, l can see the positives but l am still allowed to voice my opinion and comment how l see it. I know many fans of clubs refuse to get stuck into their own club, I'm not one of them. I will praise when it's due and be critical and harsh also. I have also seen many so called Hawthorn supporters happy with the loss because they believe Harley Reid will be our saviour. There won't be many winnable games for the Hawks this year so they need to get them when they can, the kids need to get that winning feeling. It's great for their confidence, progress and development.

Calm down Dean. You mention that the back half is our most experienced...Yes, you are correct, but one of them is Frost, who is not exactly the steadying type. And in case you didnt notice, defense isnt just the back six these days. Its the whole team. And although we're obviously disappointed, we (the rest of us Hawthorn supporters) are trying to see the positives out of this game. I get annoyed with a few of the terrible errors that an experienced player like Frost makes, but then he does something great...followed by something bad. I look forward to the day when we can have reliable key position backs again. But lets cool our jets and focus on the positives and leave it to the coaches to sort out how to play in the last few minutes. IMO, they just went too defensive too early. Chip kicking with 6 minutes to go is actually what killed us. But I am happy with progress of our kids the last 2 weeks. Go Hawks

Annoyed that we play your mob in Ballarat what a complete farce it’s more your home base rather than ours. Bloody AFL :boxing:

The best tackler for
hissize was the once Dean Laidley. Although Amon and many others may still have nightmares about Naitanui .Birdman

Not me. 2016 is getting some way in the RVM,though. 2018 is looking a bit dim too.

When you've got 10 kg and 10 cm on the bloke you're tackling, it makes for a better crunch.

I don’t think there are too many supporters out there happy with a loss. Unfortunately some are so we can get Harley Reid who may be very good but not a need. Lynch is a VFL player at best, not the answer. I agree Moore should’ve got a in the back free to close out the game but frees are missed on both sides. Ward was bad omission as he has been playing really well this year.

Lots of factors went into that loss including critical umpiring calls and Lynch being subbed off early with concussion after he'd finally been called up to be the resting ruck in the forward line in the absence of a recognised FF or CHF.

Of course it’s valid, they lost the game in the last five minutes. The most important 5 minutes of the game. You talk like the Crows are an experienced outfit they are a young team also. I think what you fail to understand is that wins against the Giants and Crows would give a big confidence boost for the young guys. They need to win games like this, big part of development also.

And in that the teams are similar. We were holding the parcel when the music stopped

If only the game was 5 mins long your comment would be valid but it's not. Young sides lose close ones particularly after they have busted their boxes to stay in the game.

Do we? That's going to be a hard watch. Don't really like watching the Bulldogs.

Crows may have won but struggling to get by the worst team in the league shows they aren’t up to the recent hype.
Dean
Roar Rookie
No it's not, they would've gone through the closing minutes last week and drilled into them what they need to do to close it out. The Hawks defense is the most experienced part of our team, no excuses not to hold on.

I just can’t see how your not disappointed in losing two winnable games in a row. Effort was great but any passionate fan should be dispointed losing both those games. If you cared to look at my first comment, l said it was a pathetic last 5 minutes which it was. I didn’t knock them for the first 3 quarter and 25 minutes. They didn’t learn anything with the Giants loss. Once again we had players trying to do too much playing hero (CJ) rather than trying to ice the game and play like how we got the lead in the first place. Not sure how that is hard to understand.
