Hawthorn return to Tasmania, the scene of their sole victory this season, to take on the red-hot Adelaide. Join The Roar for live scores from 1:10pm (AEST).

The Hawks defeated North Melbourne in Launceston in Round 3, but aside from that, it has been a difficult start to the season under Sam Mitchell. Last week’s heartbreaking loss to GWS was their fourth in five matches, and sees the Hawks last on the ladder.

The Crows started out the 2023 season slow, taking two losses in their fist two rounds, but since then they’ve found their stride and managed to get on to a three game winning streak that they will be looking to keep alive and extend to four after their matchup with the Hawks.

They’ve played a strong brand of football that has resulted in an offensive explosion their last three rounds, booting scores of 110-plus in each of their last three games while also showing strong defensive capacity as no opponent has scored more than 90 against them in the same stretch.

The Adelaide Crows will loom as a tough matchup on the calendars of all their future opponents if they can keep up this form and style of football that has seen them become a team headed in a positive direction. The Hawks meanwhile are a team heading in what seems to be a decidedly downward direction, at least for this year.

Hawthorn were quite often the wooden spooners in the pre-season predictions, and five rounds into the season not much has changed to make us think those predictions were wrong. Their mass exodus of experience on the team list has shown on the field, their only win was a grudge match against their former coach and his new team. The plus side going into this week is that threat sole win also came at UTAS Stadium.

The Hawks have looked good in flashes, but have shown a remarkable inconsistency in maintaining their good play, and have also had much lower lows than their highs have been. Their performance against Sydney still lingers in the memory as astonishingly uninspired and with the intensity of a training drill.

The Hawks are undeniably ‘tanking’ this year, and with that comes those kinds of performances. It will undoubtedly be a long year for Hawthorn and their fans, but they will still be looking to put in performances that show progress towards becoming a team that may be more competitive next year.

It also goes without saying that in a season starved of victory, the rare triumphs that do come will be appreciated in the clubhouse and amongst their fans with even greater enthusiasm.

Adelaide have named an unchanged team for their trip to Launceston, while the Hawks have omitted Lloyd Meek and rested Josh Ward. Max Lynch slots into the team into Meek’s vacated ruck position.
