Two old foes vying to keep within touching distance of the top eight meet at the MCG as Collingwood bid for a third victory in a row against the up-and-down Hawthorn. Join The Roar for live scores and rolling coverage from 2:10pm (AEST).
Hawthorn head to the MCG this afternoon having lost five of their last six games and Collingwood have won two in a row against quality opponents. The Hawks have been extremely dominant in this match-up in recent years, but they come into this one as the underdogs based on recent form.
The Hawks were beaten in every aspect of the game last weekend against an emerging Suns outfit. The midfield struggled to deliver the ball into the forward line and their defence was no match for the Suns’ combination of small and tall forwards.
Tom Mitchell had a dominant outing with 29 touches for the night but the lack of a recognised ruck was ultimately what led to the Hawks being inefficient with ball in hand. Ned Reeves will be a welcome addition back into the side for Sam Mitchell as Darcy Cameron is proving to be an effective replacement for Brodie Grundy in the ruck at Collingwood.
Jaeger O’Meara’s return will also be a handy boost to their midfield as he and Mitchell look to re-spark their dominance as one of the AFL’s best midfield pairings when they are firing on all cylinders.
Collingwood are coming off a win that was arguably the match of the season so far, beating the red-hot Blues at the MCG on Sunday afternoon. They were able to hold off a resurgent Carlton side who kicked the last three goals of the game to ultimately come away with a four-point win.
Despite the Blues having the majority of the ball in the midfield, Jack Crisp was able to continue his new role in the centre with 27 touches to lead Collingwood through the middle of the ground.
Scott Pendlebury and Steele Sidebottom will equal the record this week for most games as teammates this afternoon. It will be interesting to see how the Hawks handle these two legends of the game in their new positions up forward and in defence, respectively. The Pies will also have the upper hand in the ruck this afternoon, with Cameron in great form and Mason Cox backing up after a great showing last week against Carlton.
Prediction
I am tipping Collingwood to continue their good patch of form with a 12-point win this afternoon.

Need to sign Henry up Virgil before the Cats get their claws into him.

Love the fact that Henry can turn it on when it matters. Daicos is sublime - has space and time.

Peter They are becoming robotic. The rule was for players heading in opposite directions where one goes to ground and collides with legs (in some early examples players slid in boots first ) that rule is great . What happened to Moore has nothing to do with the intent of the rule and the umpire should be off to Elmore seconds next week .

Dee’s beat all sides except Collingwood last year so will be keen to have a big one as well as not dropping 3 in a row

Can thank clarko for that. Didn't want to go to the draft. But what's done is done. Plenty of upside to this team.

They were on the rebound last night too but really didn't offer much after halfway through the first. Ripe for the picking by the pies

Lots of shots early on were from difficult angles. But we also missed some easy ones later on. The wet weather didn't help.

Nah 100%. Made for a great contest.

Just looking in. Was the Pies' inaccuracy due to pressure or shots from a long way out?

dees and magpies a 50-50 game. Macdonald out for at least 12 weeks

Dees on the rebound after two losses. Jamie Elliott back will be a huge in. No passengers today so just the injured McInnes out for Elliott at this stage. Lots of sore boys though so let’s see the wash up.

Three great wins in a row and holding off opposing sides in tough situations for the young Pies. In the 8, and currently 4 points off 3rd spot. Hawks are not shabby at all and in similar stage of development. Young sides will ebb and flow but looking forward to Pies taking on the Dees next week.

Hawks play a tough style and have some big bodied youth coming through. Way better than I thought they’d be this year and not just saying it because we scraped over the line

Lipinski did his bit to tap the ball out of bounds deliberately in the dying minutes only for the hawks not to capitalise
