The Hawthorn Hawks take on the Collingwood Magpies in a Friday night MCG clash that doesn’t promise a heap, but could produce plenty. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog at 7:50pm (AEST) on Friday.

Having suffered a heartbreaking loss at the MCG last round, Hawthorn are currently languishing in 15th spot, with just five wins from 14 games.

The magic that once surrounded the Hawks is seemingly gone, and coach Clarkson has recognised that and is trying to inject something new and fresh into the team on a weekly basis.

Despite being in the ultimate position with just two minutes left, Hawthorn simply couldn’t finish the job against West Coast and it likely leaves the club devoid of confidence heading into another tough fixture.

From a Collingwood perspective, the past few matches have been anything but convincing.

Systematically destroyed by North Melbourne, the Magpies looked a shell of its former self and moved forward with aimless and reckless abandon.

For most of 2019, Collingwood has taken a leaf out of Richmond’s 2017 book, where the club has continuously tried different things tactically within games before “flicking the switch” in one quarter and securing victories.

Now, the Magpies look a little shaky and if anyone knows how to capitalise on a sniff of shakiness and indecision, it’s Alistair Clarkson.

Prediction
Surprisingly, Hawthorn has won 11 of its last 12 games against Collingwood and generally matches up solidly.

The Magpies have confirmed they’ll be taking in Isaac Quaynor for his debut and from his VFL performances, he will be adding a level of excitement that may be able to stimulate the rest of the team.

Collingwood needs to assert its dominance in this match and really stamp its foot down given a number of teams are pushing hard for second spot on the ladder.

The Hawks will provide a stern challenge because Clarkson can make the most of his cattle, but if the Magpies can put some effort into negating James Sicily, they’ll run away with this game easily.

Magpies by 25.

Not much of a judge of character alchemist...ive followed pies all my life ... i know an ego when i see one and these ones have hijacked a club...but you like Peter the great are authorities on so much...we are all in awe of you. Wait till end of season before you talk pies up...or like 6 other seasons you will have pie on you face.

Col is very much Navy Blues pieman. Col and I have had our own battles in here in support of our sides . He is measured though and can spot lunatics from a mile away

Well Pieman everyone is entitled to an opinion but from an outsider all I can say is Ed has taken your club from low depths to probably the biggest and wealthiest Melbourne clubs alongside Richmond. As for Malthouse, as a Carlton supporter I would have been happy for him to stay at Collingwood and would have preferred Buckley coach the Blues.

Not sure if you noticed but pies arent as good as the eagles and pies 3 losses are definitely not a precursor to a flag...time will tell who is right Pete. Hope you have the humilty to admit it when it happens. And just for the record i believe alot will hang on the last game where pies play bombers if they lose that one they could miss finals this year.

I actually am Col im just not a Buckley mguire supporter...2 different things. You can have your cheap shots when buckley proves he is worth all that effort and time put into him at the cost of probably another flag with malthouse...a real coach. 7 years later he has earned 1 finals campaign. Dont worry i was surprised but he has alot to prove still to many supporters. You might say thats history but sorry we are paying for that history ...

You take that back! Like Gilligan? Oh my days. I don’t measure the quality of a game with ad breaks. Chuck some more rules at our great game because the coaches (and players) still start games more conservative than they end them shall we? Guess I’m witnessing an all-time classic on the gold coast right now but just don’t realise it.

Have similar feelings about WC tonight after the slog we had, thankfully dockers played in wet conditions vs Carlton so hopefully cancels each other out.

Your point of the drop in midfield pressure is a good one. However its just one of several issues that is interconnected with what else is going wrong. Key players missing, a drop in form to other players and certain players not being able to fulfill their best roles due to others being on the sidelines is the obvious generalised problem here. Jeremy Howe and Tom Langdon are Collingwoods best intercept defenders. With them missing so goes the Pies ability to "slingshot" the ball the other way. Hence the ball movement is slower. Not enough inside midfield grunt is showing up the lack of midfield pressure. Treloar is more suited as an outside midfield runner. Ditto Sidebottom. Ditto Phillips. Pendlebury is trying to fulfill inside and outside roles but the workload is telling. Sier is an inside midfield bull but is off the pace due to being out of AFL action for so long. Of course Adams leads the way in this department so his absense exacerbates this problem. His return will be faced with the same issue as mentioned for Sier. Up forward Mihocek and Cox are vital for the Pies forward structure. As the 2 key talls they need to hold their own otherwise it leaves too much work for the smaller forwards. Both these two are out of touch though. Hence too much reliance is left on De Goey. His ability up field also lends himself to pushing further up the ground away from goal at times. With Stephensons omission, Thomas' major drop off in form, Elliotts long-term absence and Hoskin-Elliotts limitations, its no wonder the Pies attack has dropped off markedly. The Defensive structures are holding up well thanks in the main to Roughead, Moore and Maynard. But the disconnect between midfield and forward is where it is falling apart. Hence forward 50 entries are down, possession retention in forward 50 declines and pressure on disposal efficiency increases. If Cox continues to play as a forward, it has to be one that stays in forward 50. He is too easily pushed under the ball when either leading up the ground or contesting in packs. Isolation is vital for him to use his height as a weapon. Once the ball comes to the ground, his size renders him almost irrelevent. It might be time to just bite the bullet and encourage quicker ball movement like we saw last year. Of course still identify when its appropriate to hold onto the ball and pin point passes when the opposition zone off ala Mcgovern. We shall see next week I suppose against the Eagles.

Doubt he is even a Collingwood supporter Pete. Unfortunately you get the occasional nuffie on this site that just wants to antagonise.

Every club has injuries and you are missing only 5 bonafide best 22, beams form prior to injury was not best 22.

Lol yes bitter man I obviously have no idea and have never watched any footy live. If you could discredit what I said which you’ll find is true rather than try and discredit me you might achieve something, like when you learnt congestion is not an issue in the game, remember that. You’re so stuck in the eighties that Hill Street Blues is probably your favourite TV show, would’ve said mother and son but that’s to clever I think.

Hope they are better than our performance staff Yattz. Every year we are in the worst three sides for injury. Every single year. Sack the lot and poach the best from other clubs Ed.
