After recording their first win of season 2019, the Melbourne Demons will return home to the MCG and host the St Kilda Saints on Saturday afternoon. Join The Roar for all the action with live scores and a blog of the match from 4:35pm AEST.

There was plenty of talk in the lead up to last Thursday night about Melbourne, three consecutive losses to start a season isn’t exactly what the fans what or the experts predicted.

The Demons responded with a 22-point win over the Sydney Swans at the SCG, and kick-started their season.

St Kilda also recorded a win in round four, overcoming an injury-hit Hawthorn by five points.

Scoring dried up in the last, but the Saints had multiple opportunities to hit the front, inaccuracy in front of goal threatened to ruin their chances of a shock victory.

The Saints’ midfield work-rate and defensive efforts held the Hawks to just one behind in the final term. St Kilda have surprisingly started 3-1, but will face a bigger test this weekend against Melbourne.

Melbourne have made two changes to their side for this weekend’s match; strengthening their defence with the return of Neville Jetta and Jordan Lewis.

Jetta was a late withdrawal against the Swans last Thursday with knee soreness, while this will be Jordan Lewis’ first game for the season after sustaining a hamstring before round one.

Both Oscar McDonald and Billy Stretch have been dropped from the Demons’ squad to make way for the duo.

St Kilda will also welcome an experienced pair back to the side this weekend with Jarryn Geary and Jack Steven included in the team list.

Skipper Geary missed the win against Hawthorn, withdrawn late with an illness. Steven returns after two weeks out of action, St Kilda managing his workload early in the season.

Defender Daniel McKenzie is out of this clash, precautionary action after a head knock against the Hawks. Hunter Clark has been omitted; he’ll play for Sandringham tomorrow (Sunday).

In Round 15, 2018 St Kilda put together a brilliant final quarter effort to beat the Demons by four points, though it was a tense final few minutes.

Prediction
After a slow start to the season, Melbourne should record their second win with a win over the Saints.

It won’t be easy and will (hopefully) be close, but expect the Demons to get over the line, just.

Melbourne by 13 points.

Super Saints! The St Kilda Saints have smashed the Melbourne Demons by 40 points at the MCG on Saturday evening. Melbourne opened strongly, finding plenty of the footy, dominating the statistics but just not putting it on the scoreboard. From just six inside 50s (to the Dees’ 16), St Kilda were accurate and efficient, putting four goals, one behind on the board and taking a four-point lead at the first change. In the second, Melbourne continued to dominate the statistics, put an early goal on the board but then went missing as the Saints fought their way into the game around the ground. Three late goals to the Saints saw them lead by 15 at the main break. The work rate from St Kilda in the third term was simply brilliant; they kicked a further five goals to make it eight in-a-row and kicked accurately too, just five behinds for the match. St Kilda didn’t let up, they were on fire and they punished Melbourne for every fumble and every mistake. Melbourne hit back in the final term to bring the margin back to five goals, but they were generally good individual efforts, only one passage of exciting, true team play. The Saints finished strong with the final two goals, including Jack Billings kicking his second goal after the siren. The fans and the players certainly enjoyed the win, St Kilda now go four wins, one loss and are certainly a force in the competition this year. Melbourne were poor, really poor, but the Saints were awesome. They took the game on, everyone bought in, stuck to their structures and put the pressure on around the ground. Held in the first half, Clayton Oliver finished with 31 disposals, 3 clearances and 6 tackles, while Christian Salem was solid all night with 29 disposals. Braydon Preuss looked dangerous up forward early, he kicked two first quarter goals, but had no influence after that. Tim Membrey had a night out kicking four goals, Dean Kent kicked three and had 20 disposals against his old side, and Jack Billings found the footy 28 times and booted two goals. It was an even effort all round from the Saints though, with contributors across the ground. Simply brilliant by the defence to weather the early flood of Demon’s inside 50s and then to stop the Dees’ scoring for almost a half of footy. Ben Long got a corked thigh early, but played out the game and hit the scoreboard with a goal. Melbourne now have a short turn around to a Wednesday night ANZAC Eve clash with Richmond – a must win for the Dees – and St Kilda will host Adelaide at Marvel on Saturday afternoon. Final Score Melbourne 7.13.55 St Kilda 15.5.95

Great call Sarah, just a stunning game for the saints, finally feeling that this season we have games where we are playing well, not just the opponents playing poorly!

Saints finally delivering on the potential we all saw a couple of season ago while the Dees have never fixed their defensive fraility. I reckon Paul Roos should hand some of that motzer deal back to the AFL.

Q4 1' - Goal Saints Parker marks, he'll have to kick from outside 50. It's a big kick, but across the face and Membrey holds onto it beautifully. He had Gawn and Preuss with him and Membrey jumps and takes the ball with two hands. Snaps and that's a nice finish for the Saints! Melbourne 55 St Kilda 89
