Paul Gallen and Barry Hall face off in a code war boxing battle in Melbourne. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7pm (AEDT).

Not many would have predicted that one day we would see a league vs AFL in-ring battle between Paul Gallen and Barry Hall, but here we are.

The two men will slug it out on Margaret Court Arena; a venue normally known for its hosting of epic tennis encounters and concerts performed by popular artists. This time around it will host pugilism.

Gallen has shown some skill in the ring in what is still quite a young boxing career. Despite some questionable opposition, he has never been beaten. His goal will be to extend that run tonight against a man making his first professional trip inside the ropes.

Hall is a man mountain, was an enforcer on the field and despite having been out of the game for some time, looks in good shape.

Four years Gallen’s senior, Hall has a few obstacles to overcome if he is to win this fight.

Experience and ring craft look to be the two most significant of those, although his height and reach advantage could make things difficult for the former Cronulla captain.

No doubt there have been a few barbs thrown in the lead up to the fight and there could also be some code war bragging rights depending on the result.

As for the 6 x 2 minute rounds and how they will unfold? Who really knows. Let’s just hope there is some substance and time involved, with these sorts of arranged fights often lacking quality and merely providing quirky and cheap interest for punters.

Prediction
Gallen looks to be a strong favourite for the fight, based on what we have seen in his previous bouts. Barry Hall is no wimp and possesses power.

A win for the former St Kilda, Western Bulldogs and Sydney Swans forward may come from an opportunistic moment where that power is used to penetrate a well organised and competent Gallen defence.

If Hall cannot manage that moment, it is likely that Gallen will wear him down with technique and claim his tenth professional victory.

I think you’d prefer they fought 3 minute rounds. Right? Or is your computer broken and keeps submitting the same comment over and over and.....

Apparently you’re not allowed an opinion if you think Hall won Stuart. I’m yet to see the fight but reading all the commentary I could find the views reflected the result. 50:50 for each fighter. Not sure what I think of celebrity boxing. The You Tube tools getting rich having a Z grade fight sort of annoys me. Although these two have merit I must say

Should have a rematch in Sydney with boxing rules of 3 minute rounds and see how Barry goes. He had all the advantages – height, home town and shorter rounds. Saying that, most NRL players would punch holes in AFL players in the ring. We all saw what happened when Mal Meninga hammered a so called AFL hard man lol..

It appears you are determined to make the NRL a clear winner in this rather odd experiment, when in fact my wife could knock me, you, Gallen and Hall into next week!

Paul Gallen and Barry Hall have fought out a spirited draw at the Margaret Court Arena in Melbourne. In a fight that gave many north and south of the border the hope of finally proving just who had the biggest………reputations, Paul Gallen and Barry Hall could not be split in their heavyweight fight in Melbourne. Whilst the majority of the fighting world felt Gallen was a sure thing considering his experience and unbeaten record, Hall gave as good as he got and pushed the former Cronulla captain all the way to the final second of the 6th round. In fact, some felt Hall had been the winner, despite Gallen’s claims that he was the man who took the fight to his opponent and deserved the victory. Many felt quite the opposite and believed Hall had landed the most significant blows of the evening. Hall came into the fight behind the eight ball. Four years Gallen’s senior and without boxing experience, many thought he would be pulverised. It was to be nothing of the sort for Hall as he dominated the early rounds as Gallen felt the pressure of his quick hands and fast movement. By the final two rounds, fatigue had set in and the fighters lacked the power to seal the deal. A drawn decision potentially flattered Gallen yet there was little between the two men after one of the best celebrity fights we have seen in Australia for some time. The result sets things up rather perfectly for the promoters with another bout likely in the new year. Let’s hope the organisers realise they have two pretty decent fighters on their hands and allow them an 8-10 round contest so that we can witness one of them hitting the canvas and not have to endure another draw that leaves the code war unsettled. Final result Paul Gallen vs Barry Hall DRAW!!!
