In the first preliminary final, the Richmond Tigers will host the Collingwood Magpies at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday night. Join The Roar for live coverage of the match from 7:50pm AEST.

A convincing victory over Hawthorn in the first week of finals granted Richmond a week off through the semi-finals.

Another dominant second-half performance set up the 31-point win for the Tigers and they’re now well-rested and ready to fire against the Magpies.

Collingwood’s route to the preliminary finals has been more tiring.

A close loss to the West Coast Eagles in Perth, put the Magpies into sudden death semi-final against the Giants last weekend.

It was a tight night at the MCG, but Collingwood held on to a ten-point victory over GWS, set up by a three-goal start to the final quarter.

In team news, there are no changes to either side, with the teams lining up as they have in their most recent matches.

Dustin Martin will line up for the Tigers on Friday night, despite all of the talk during this week about his ‘light’ training schedule.

Collingwood have performed better than most expected this year and their turnaround mirrors that of Richmond in 2017, keeping the coach but changing just about everything else.

To go all the way to the grand final, they have to knock off the very team their journey has drawn parallels with. Can they continue their press and put themselves in the final game of the year?

Richmond are on a roll, many have called them unbeatable at the MCG throughout 2018 and that they have been.

With two weeks off in the last three, the entire outfit is refreshed and motivated to make the grand final for the second consecutive year.

The last time Richmond and Collingwood met was in round 19; the Tigers won by 28 points, running away with it thanks to five goals in a row to start the final term.

Adam Treloar, Jordan De Goey and Tyson Goldsack have returned to the Magpies’ line up since that clash, adding some experience and star-power across the ground.

That day, Collingwood also lost three players to injury, but all credit goes to the Tigers who battled hard and then convincingly beat the Magpies outfit.

Prediction
The pressure applied by these two teams and the intensity at which they play, will most likely provide a tight, but low-scoring affair in the first half.

Richmond’s endurance should open the game up in the second half, as both teams start to tire.

The Tigers are the favourites going into this match, and that is the way my head and heart are leaning.

Richmond by 15 points.

To my mind, you would always pick Martin even on one leg. It is easy to forget that for the first three quarters of the two home and away matches he was well held by Collingwood despite their lack of interchanges. He is a great player, but I did not expect him to dominate against the Collingwood mids.

The real issue is how clubs are positioned with injuries and players suffering from wear and tear. But realistically, just like the six day break discussions, clubs should be using their experience in managing the mid-season bye to develop the skills and systems to manage a pre finals bye. It exists because clubs started playing all their seconds if they knew they were in the top four which had the potential to seriously distort the ladder and effect the credibility of the competition's fairness. Everyone knows that the bye is coming: just manage it.

Congratulations to Buckley and the lads for making my sixtieth year on this planet earth worth living. I have never seen Collingwood beat Richmond in a final and they have broken a hoodoo that dates back to the 1969 Preliminary Final. I don't think we can win it because of the Melbourne Club. We might have a chance if WCE get up tomorrow because we have an axe to grind with them after two losses thus far. I don't want to meet Melbourne because our record is 1-6 in Grand Finals and a dodgy umpires call on Ian Graham cost us in 1964, my first Grand Final. He clearly marked the ball in the goal square and was denied the mark! Remember we lost by 4 points. I left the MCG tearful and disappointed because of the injustice that was handed out to us on that day. If we play Melbourne and it's close we'll lose. That was the most unjust of all Bob Rose's losses. Sorry Bucks for bagging you when I did, but sometimes constructive criticism helps a cause and many of my comments were spot on. Come on Pies!

The bye has an impact, although it's not a foregone conclusion. It's how well the other side might be equipped to take advantage of that impact. Last year both of the non-bye sides were travelling, for example, which might've impacted the other way. Last year is such a small sample size, a broader sample size shows having a discrepancy between coming off the bye between two opponents does have a fair impact.

Was it not Kevin Bartlett who claimed Richmond would win the next 5 premierships? Hardwick was not worried about away losses in one of his press conferences and reading between the lines. "Finals at MCG our home ground not worried."

Credit to Collingwood. I have criticised Buckley and his tactics in past years, but I have never questioned the commitment of his players. They have always given everything for the guy. Collingwood executed with less talent tonight. All credit to them. Shame on Richmond. They were horrible Richmond didn't show up. Rance was a chump. Martin completely sullied the bed in the first half. Surely he had more than a cork. He was weak. Credit to Riewoldt.

It didn’t last year, but as I said during the build up the Tigers had played 2 games in 35 days. That can’t be a good run in. They are a wonderful club though and will be back in 2019 with Tom Lynch too.

I’m just feeling very humble. I know how the Tiger fans must be feeling, I’ve been there many times. Just can’t believe how well we played. One game to go though, one game boys .

You’ll be back TTF. The bye will be the big talking point. Cotch and Jack were great, Dusty clearly hampered.

Absolutely. Can Melbourne go up a notch? I think the Eagles can. Home ground and 57000 supporters. Kennedy and Darling the best 1-2. Lycett and Vardy to break even. Vince a big inclusion sure Hutchings on Oliver, better than Greenwood The Dees' first quarter needs to be stellar The Eagles are better than the Victorian panditry would believe and maybe Melbourne are better than I think, but it's still WCE by 17 for me

Couple of blokes on here think the Eagles are a shoe in. Eagles are current $1.80 to win and Melbourne a little over $2 so yes they are slight favourites. Should be a great contest.

The Collingwood Magpies have crushed the Richmond Tigers by 39 points at the MCG, in the first preliminary final on a clear Friday night. Richmond opened their preliminary final with three behinds, before Collingwood responded with two goals and took an early lead. The Magpies kicked the final three goals of the first term to be in front by 21-points at the first break and sound the first alarm bells for the Tigers. Mason Cox opened the second quarter with three big contested marks and three straight goals, as U.S.A was cheered around the MCG. Collingwood squeezed Richmond; they didn’t give the Tigers any time, kept the ball in their forward half and put pressure on the scoreboard. At half time the deficit was 44 points and the Richmond Tigers needed to reset. Richmond scored first in the second half, but their hope was short lived as Jordan De Goey kicked his fourth. Goals to Bachar Houli and Jack Riewoldt at the end of the third term lifted the Tigers and their fans at the final break. When Richmond kicked the opening two goals in the final quarter, the game was back on. Richmond fans were vocal once again and everyone was thinking maybe, just maybe… Collingwood finished with a bang, goals to Adam Treloar, Brodie Grundy and Jaidyn Stephenson put the game to rest, it was decided: The Magpies would play in the grand final. Steele Sidebottom was prolific in the midfield with 41 disposals, while Taylor Adams (36 disposals, 8 clearances) and Jack Crisp (30 disposals, 2 goals) were great as well. Jordan De Goey kicked four goals, Mason Cox three and Brody Mihocek and Jack Crisp also contributed two goals each. Brodie Grundy dominated the ruck for the Magpies, he had 56 hitouts, kicked a goal and his presence was felt around the ground all night. Dustin Martin clearly wasn’t fit, David Astbury struggled as well, but Jack Riewoldt (5 goals) and Trent Cotchin (25 disposals, 10 clearances, 7 tackles) led alone from the front. The biggest concern for Collingwood is a high ankle sprain to Jeremy Howe, after a run-down tackle by Daniel Rioli. He spent the final quarter on the bench, but with the game all over there was little point risking him. That’s season 2018 over for the Tigers, a brilliant year comes to an end with the loss and it’s a very different feeling to last year’s elation. Collingwood now look ahead, with their opponent to be decided in Perth tomorrow: will it be an all-Victorian grand final, or will West Coast prove the bye not to be an issue? Enjoy the week Collingwood fans! Final score Richmond 8.10.58 Collingwood 15.7.97
