Fresh off the bye, the Sydney Swans host the Hawthorn Hawks on Friday night at the SCG. Join The Roar for all the action, with live scores and a blog starting at 7:50pm AEST.

Sydney’s players and staff have enjoyed a week off, a much-needed break for a young side who have struggled with form and injuries during the first half of the year.

Leading into the mid-season bye, Sydney recorded a huge 45-point victory over the reigning premiers, the West Coast Eagles, with five-goal hauls from Lance Franklin and Tom Papley.

At home, the Swans went down three players to injuries at half-time, but persevered and pushed the margin out, celebrate co-captain Dane Rampe’s 150th match with a win.

Hawthorn were slow coming off their bye, losing by 19 points to Essendon on Friday night; a must-win for both teams and it was the Hawks who came up short.

They tried to make a comeback, but the margin nearing the half-way mark of the final term was 38 points, too big, and the Hawks suffered their seventh loss in 12 games.

James Sicily was trialed up forward, but returned to the backline in the third quarter. Ben Stratton was the topic of conversation though, the captain cited for three incidents by the Match Review Officer.

Sydney’s team will be strengthened for the match with the return of a quality trio.

Jarrad McVeigh will miss, with the Hawk suffering a hamstring injury in the win over the Eagles.

Jackson Thurlow and Tom McCartin have been omitted from the line-up.

Josh P Kennedy, Will Hayward and Zak Jones are the inclusions to the Swans’ side, adding valuable experience ahead of this exciting clash.

Hawthorn will be without captain Ben Stratton, who will miss the match in Sydney and the next against West Coast, suspended for stomping and pinching Essendon players in last Friday night’s loss.

James Cousins has been omitted.

Jarryd Roughead returns to the side after he was dropped to the VFL ahead of round eight. He has worked hard in the twos to put together a solid block of form and earned his recall to the senior side.

Young Harry Morrison has also been included on the interchange.

The last time these two sides met was in Round 23, 2018 and it was Hawthorn who overran the Swans by nine-points, in a tight finish.

Sydney ruckman Callum Sinclair will play his 100th AFL match when he takes to the field this Friday night.

Prediction
In recent times, these matches have been very close. There is plenty of history between the sides and, despite them sitting lower on the ladder than we have come to expect, it should be another classic.

Sydney at home look like the better team and should get the job done.

Sydney by seven points.

Richard Tambling comes to mind if you are talking reputations at draft.

No thanks Dean, Wingard goes missing a lot and has a questionable attitude, wouldn’t fit the Pies happy home.

No thanks, averages 18 disposals , 3 marks, 1: 6 goals a game, inconsistent and overrated.

Relax AD, ;) even if Brad wanted away (not sure why given where the Hawks are currently at), I doubt we need another outside player esp. one that will need something sustantial to satisfy Freo. I think the Hawks have to prioritise an inside mid and key forward.

Wingard has been a dual AA aswell as considered amongst the top 5-10 players before he even entered his prime, absolutely brilliant pick up imo aswell, I'd take him at wce any day.

Totally agree, most sides would love to have Wingard in their team. Interrupted season but is going to offer a lot more to the team when he gets back. Hawks have already found a replacement for Burton in Scrimshaw who has played some good footy and Impey has elevated his game this year and is far more damaging than Burton. Wingard was picked up as an elite quick small forward to help with the retirement of Rioli and the impending retirement of Puoppolo. Peter doesn't rate Wingard but l think he would be more than happy with him running around in the black and white.

True, didn’t help. Neither the slide tackle into Hannebery by Easton Wood, providing Hanners with an injury that has destroyed the last 3 years of his playing career. No free kick awarded, disgraceful. We’re in disagreement on the point of the umpires, yet the WB deserved their win.

Wait, Brad Hill? Yeah, nah, I doubt Freo would be sending Brad Hill back!

Bud rolling his ankle really badly in first 10min was reason Bulldogs won that gf not the umpires.

25 yo with elite talent for Burton a decent hbf with those easy to find, you're taking Wingard all day every day.

None of their former sides look like winning a flag soon either....

A win against the Hawks is a good win no matter what and one to put in the bank. Well done to this young and improving team.

Nah, that too generalised. No two skewed umpiring outcomes are the same. WB won 2016 because they were favoured by the umps and that took the wind out of Sydney’s sails. Sydney suffered approx same free kick skew against in 2012 GF yet were able to crack the Hawks anyway.

O’Meara, Mitchell and Wingard joined at the wrong time, the end of an era.

Morrison is a wingman but with Scully coming in he's struggled to thrive anywhere else. Not the sort of limitation that Clarko forgives often.

Hawks are in world of trouble. Almost unwatchable game plan, half of players with no spirit. Is Clarko actually tanking? Some of his selections, plans would suggest so. Looking at the list - not pretty, probably 10-15 players turnover in the off season. Bottom 4 this year for me considering the remaining games. Any quality player would be crazy to join them.

Nup, best team will always win regardless of free kick count, for mine it's lazy to suggest umpiring directly impacts who wins. Tonight Sydney was the better and won though behind in free kick count.
