After hightailing it out of Melbourne, the Essendon Bombers battle the West Coast Eagles at their Optus Stadium fortress in the west. Don’t miss a single goal with our live scores page on The Roar from 7:40pm (AEST).

The future looks bright for the Bombers, with the team showing real promise under new coach Ben Rutten. They might only have a 4-6 record in 2021, but a hefty percentage of 105 and a number of close losses means they could be inside the eight right now with a bit of luck. Jake Stringer’s return from a hamstring injury also gives their forward line some extra power.

The Eagles, while two wins ahead of the Dons and inside the eight, have been less impressive to date. Last week’s loss to GWS in Sydney saw their away record drop to 1-4 for the season, an ugly stat line for a team many tipped to be well and truly in the race for the flag.

However, their record in Perth remains imperious, and it would be a major surprise if the Bombers could spring an upset on home turf.

The bombers were aided by the amount of youth they have and they always beat the Eagles precisely when they’re not expected to

And yet I suspect WCE will win another premiership before the Bombers do. Of course whether that’s before 2025 is a question mark

As WCE were the last non-richmond team to win a premiership without their best ruckman, wingman and small defender, and with their star defender playing with internal bleeding, I beg to differ.

We have not obliterated anyone for some time. Essendon are a decent side and theoretically should have more wins than they have. Rilois coming back all right it’s a done thing. Rioli schuey a fit Yeo Duggan McGovern and if they all start to click together with Kelly Cripps Gaff Jk and JD and Allen should technically be top 4 but hey ho had not happened yet.

It’s a matter of coaching you know, truck has done a wonderful job making sure the bombers walk a little taller. I was listening to the lunchtime catch up reactions today and they’re sounding like the lid is coming off, if we win next Saturday oooooooffftfffttt the lid is well and truly off

I like Simpson a lot - best AFL coach going around IMO. However, seriously wonder about our recruitment - and strength and conditioning .. (and Optus surface(?))... and players' intent/desire. It's one thing to have injuries, but to have a reserves team that's so weak, such that when senior players injured, there's only half-hearted replacements? Hasn't the club publicly admitted this gulf in talent is a concern? The boys almost come across a bit too precious in that if things are not on their terms, or the game is in the balance (Giants, Doggies, Bombers), they just won't grind it out. Love the boys and team, but have no answers or suggestions. Just worry and disappointment, topped with pessimism that it's about to get much worse. Especially as currently, Eagles coming across as a bit of a nice guys pushover team.

- Is any team even afraid of playing us when no matter the score, we always inexplicably stop? - We are not getting Cripps... hasn't he re-signed/close to, plus we have no money/picks? If he comes home to WA, will be to Freo. - Too many list cloggers: Hutchings, Venables, Vardy all need to be delisted. Add Ah Chee too. - Cameron has regressed woefully. Some whispers about him having lost the passion/hunger /training discipline for the game. Shame, as the little we saw of him was brilliant. Looking more and more likely Brisbane trade bait. - Ainsworth is young enough and has a decent tank to become new Hutchings/ a decent tagger, with the right training/development. - The recruiting department has a lot to answer for. Seems the Eagles have been blinded by having very good performers and performances for so long, that somehow the end snuck up and no one has noticed. Feel desperately sorry for Allen, Ryan, Duggan, who are young and very good, and will have little to no support in their peak years unless we get super lucky in the next 2 drafts.

You’ve got a handful of good players out. Doesn’t even come close to WC’s outs and underdone! I tipped the Bombers to win. WC did their best be it wasn’t good enough.

Nonsense, yet again! WC has been leading in the last quarter of almost every game this year. I did say that the fade outs were a concern!

That would be the match committee selecting too few mids meaning those on the park are gassed, injuries to key mids, longer quarters, interchange caps (+ carrying NN and the fact that a running game has never been their strong suit - combination of factors here.

We are fading badly in the last half of the game. Is it fitness? Is it mental edge ? Is it complacency? Is it laziness? It’s a mystery but something is amiss. It needs fixing. It is nowhere near as bad as Collingwood or Hawthorn but WCE have high standards. Not keeping up to them at present.

Umpires are never an excuse too yet for some strange reason EVERY time you lose which is quite often it's the umpires.... Pathetic... Congratulations on the win though glad the umps gave you and Roaker a break this week...

just the manner of their losses that worry me re the dogs, just think their backline is undersized & can be exploited if u have a couple of decent big forwards ... their mids are great & run deep but come finals u gotta expect the oppo to have a half decent midfield too so they may not be totally dominant, leaving them open to being scored against .. in both losses the tiges & dees were able to stifle their mids with pressure

Now now I think Simpson has done a great job with j west coast but they clearly don’t like playing when the game isn’t on their terms

Look on the bright side, the Eagles decline won’t be as bad as geelongs in my opinion. They keep taking in a dozen thirty year olds into matches and barely winning them
