A diplomatic Ross Lyon reflects on his Freo coaching career

By The Roar / Editor

A relaxed Ross Lyon spoke to the media after being axed as Fremantle coach. While Lyon said he didn’t agree with the decision he understands the reasons behind it and holds no ill feeling towards the club.

Nonsense. If you are going to pin a whole season the bounce of a ball...a bounce that consistently bounces unpredictably, then you are a bad coach. Should be care Peter, Ross Lyon may one day coach Collingwood. On Buckley...it wasn't luck or lack thereof. He should look hard at how he let a 5 goal lead vanish. You offensively diminish Adam Simpson's effort to get his team back into the game by just reducing it to Sheed and a post.

Collingwood had 62 inside 50's to St Kilda's 35. Collingwood had 5 more scoring shots. Collingwood couldn't have been much worse, yet Rossy still couldn't put them away. Rossy is the 21st century's John Northey.

He didn’t really get his side close to a flag though did he? It was all over early in 2017.

Absolutely rubbish the bounce of the ball is inconsequential. It was literally the difference in him being a premiership coach. Sheed not hitting the post may be as close as Bucks gets. It’s a game with an oval ball, a fickle wind, bad umpiring and most important an opposition trying to win. Great coaches get sides in a position to win a premiership. Then luck comes in. To suggest Lyon should have or could have had the Saints further ahead assumes that Malthouse could have or should have too.

You don't get to hold the premiership cup aloft because you drew a final. You aren't referred to as a 'joint premiership coach'. St Kilda's premiership drought is still measured from 1966. If people are constantly referring to the bounce of a ball as why Lyon didn't win, it's papering over the fundamental flaws in his game plan. Premiers of course need a bit of luck to go their way...but they win because they are a better team playing under a better game plan. The bounce of the ball is inconsequential. I personally like to view the incredible effort of Maxwell as why Collingwood saved the game rather than a bounce of a ball. Reward the skill, not focus on the luck.

I don’t know how you can call a draw a failure. Pies had a power forward called Cloke he had to cover. Like Buckley last GF he didn’t win but got as close as you can

I have no particular stance on the pre season trip. Wide stance, narrow stance, normal stance, etc.

No - I don't forget. It's the first thing his die-hard defenders always bring up. What his defenders fail to acknowledge that if he went in with a better, more attacking plan for 4 quarters, he'd probably have won it...and wouldn't need to reflect on the fact the ball bounced the other way. Lyon was forced to open up the field in the second half of that match (Collingwood scored 50 points to half time, and St Kilda were 4 goals behind) and low and behold, they started to outpace Collingwood in the scoreboard. You just don't win finals with hyper defensive play.

You forget he was just one wonky bounce away from being a premiership coach and immortalised in St Kilda history. He rolled the dice on a dour affair against the Hawks and lost. Probably would have been blown away otherwise.

Don Pyke got to a Grand Final too, but two years later he's a dud coach that has lost the playing group.

Yes he did very well for a number of years I totally agree but his game plan Seems to have been left behind. Also agree he will be working as the head of football probably at Carlton.

He got his team to a grand final with his game plan ……didn’t win it but got damn close, I think some respect needs to be had in our conversations ‘boys and girls’. Don’t think he will coach again, but I think he will be in a job sooner than later within the footy industry. And the keyboard warriors, please reflect on your coaching career before, setting fire to another. Cheap shots.

For sure. Lyon is the most overrated coach in the game. The game is better off for his departure. As are 40 boys at Freo as well.

There is something nice about knowing that he won’t be a premiership coach. His game plan was an enduring blight on the game, and as it appears…the Fremantle football club. What’s so sad is that it wasn’t even his plan. 300 games copying Paul Roos. It’s also equally nice knowing Don Freo – despite admirable and magnanimous displays today – was wrong again.

Already twisting the narrative. The fact is he lost 7 of his last 9. Sure the Geelong win, was great, but the only other win in that span was a last minute 1 point home win against a poor Sydney team in what was one of the most unwatchable games you'll ever see. Lost to all bottom 3 teams. 2 goals against West Coast. Unwatchable style of footy. 3rd worst in the league for scoring.
