Does this AFLW goal umpire error prove the league needs score reviews?

By The Roar / Editor

That surely crossed the line!

"It’s possible people are also being fooled by the ball’s shadow" It is certain that people are being fooled by the ball's shadow....but also too fool to understand how shadows work The commentator actually put forward the placement of the shadow as evidence for the ball crossing over. The shadow of the goal posts suggest they too were also behind the goal line

Was it an error? I don’t think you can say definitively that 100% of the ball crossed the line, from that angle at least.

No worries Tone, I'm just having a laugh. It's very close.

Thanks for your concern Pope Paul VII but my eyes are fine. I don't think anyone's eye sight is the problem here. My argument is the bad camera angle has tricked people into believing the ball had completely crossed the line. At no point in the video is it clear the ball is entirely crossed the line. It's very close no doubt but you cannot say with any certainty from the camera angle shown.

Tone, Paully2 and the ump, respectfully, you'd better go to specsavers. The ball clearly cross the line fully and bounces. Then it makes it's merry, unpredictable way along the line until it hits the post.

Yep. It's possible people are also being fooled by the ball's shadow. Since it was in the afternoon, that shadow is being thrown further east (i.e. over the goal-line). The one thing i'd say is the goal umpire is poorly positioned. Ideally she'd be at the near goal-post, giving her a side on view. Anyway, I can't see how anyone can conclusively claim (from the video evidence) that the decision was wrong. Hence a video review wouldn't/shouldn't have over-ruled the original decision.

Spot on Paul2, the ball has to be completely over the line. Seems to me that many people either don't know the rule or don't understand the effect of camera angles ... or both. Since there was no goal line camera, the only person in the right position to judge was the goal umpire. People saying it was goal based on the TV footage are being fooled by the camera angle.

I'd say the goal umpire probably got it right. The whole ball needs to cross the line: it looks to me like it probably didn't.

Agree, but that ball should have been 30 rows back as well. Terrible execution from Walker, why she fell over I don't know.

It was so obviously a goal I reckon an AFLW official watching it on TV could have rung up straight away and have the decision changed.

Is this a legitimate top tier comp or not? If the AFL is serious about this comp they SHOULD have goal reviews just like the mens comp. Given the much lower scoring in AFLW goals are at a premium and the impact of a bad decision like this one has much bigger ramifications.

That was a great tap. The poor ump stuffed up AFLW's highlight reel.

No it doesn't. With what revenue generated is the AFLW going to pay for the installation of high tech cameras at all these second or third tier grounds?

She couldn’t have been in a better position but got it wrong. That Collingwood defender was pretty useless letting Harris easily tap the ball back.

The ump has had a shocker there.
