Eddie McGuire blasts 'stupid' Grand Final series proposals

By The Roar / Editor

The Collingwood President is sick of hearing about making the AFL decider a best of three series.

The stadiums argument is nonsense - deals can be done to make room and how many Sheffield Shield sides play at their states AFL ground anyway. 3 games is to boost TV ratings numbers and get an NRL ref to make sure there is a decider

I'm lost; why don't MCC members count? They're still there watching the game aren't they?

So home-ground advantages isn't an issue. It's easy to win premierships when you have a state side. Stick 3 or 4 more clubs over there and let's see how you go.

I think its clear those Victoria are arguing desperately to save the mind-numbing stupidity of a 22 game season with 14 home states matches followed by a home grand final. With a match every week for the season why is it suddenly different to do that in the grand final? - Answer: its not. What is stupid is Collingwood making the grand final with just 3 wins against the top 8. Richmond making the preliminary final with 1 win away from Victoria. Here's a far better solution: 17 Home and away games + 2 state matches + Finals with a best of 3 finals Series. It's not that hard Ed. Furrow your brow and concentrate, move your lips as you think, if necessary and in a few years , maybe ... no lets move forward with the forward thinkers.

Other than it being unnecessary, impossible to implement and likely to be opposed by the AFLPA you mean?

So what is the point of finishing on top. No finals then they could extend the season.

People like finals, they're exiting.

The MCC must be appeased and a final in the first week of a 3 week cycle would honor all their traditions and financials.

Okay that's a legit problem does anyone have a solution to that problem and do you have any other problems with the proposal?

It's a great idea! What's your problem with it?

I’m guessing because in that case, there wouldn’t be a ‘Grand Final’. The only match that has really mattered these past 130 years or so. It’s sort of important you know, given the history ‘n that.

Why don't we just get rid of the finals and give the premiership to who ever finishers on top of the ladder.

Reality is Macca there will never be a best of three and the non Vic clubs realise it, but what is needed is compensation for the non Victorian sides regarding the ridiculous contract that offers zero return for our clubs or states at a hole, that I think is the crux of what ppl like Pyke and Ireland are getting at. How much did the state of Victoria make since 2013 as 20000+ ppl inject huge funds into the state coffers? C'mon Macca you're a maths man I'm sure you even realise it will work out to be a greater sum than the states investment, so not only do sides non Vic states have a unlevel playing field the states cannot benefit from influx that 20000+ brings in accommodation, hospitality etc....

In week two you wouldn't ba able to play at tha Gabba, SCG, Adelaide oval or MCG for that matter (possibly Optus but I am no sure) as the are reserved for cricket by law

So only the true supporters would have got seats in Perth? The AFL would have cut out the corporate sponsors tickets? Yeah right!! More than likely there would have been less true fans. I really don't know why you are fighting reality on this issue when it has nothing to do with what I am saying, it makes me wonder who took the jam out of your donut.

I don't think anyone really wants it to be best of 3, but given that the VFL/AFL aren't willing to reward the higher seeded team with home ground advantage on Grand Final day, best of 3 is the best compromise.

Here's a creative proposal.... you could make the MCG game one and fill it no matter who plays (corporate day anyway ), have the parade and holiday in Melbourne. Next week travel to the city of the team that finished on top (if necessary) for a week newscylce of buildup interstate and more monster ratings and promotion. Week three play at the home of the other team for even more. Ummm.... why isn't this being given a fair go?

AFL have signed what gives the impression of a never ever contract with the MCC to stifle debate on what is an accepted finals system elsewhere. If this is a Sydney V Melbourne thing or turns into one well that would be when the word stupid could be bandied around. Why would a Pie Pres not at least entertain the idea of extra games for his club on the biggest stage of all. Jimmy says it's about holidays and parades well those logistical things can be sorted. As for injuries that's a just lottery and as for rewriting history to suit one side's argument that just won't wash. This is not a bad idea per se, and the louder the protesteth too muching becomes the more it makes sense in the big picture. I'm Melbourne but I don't need for the GF to be here all the time just because we started it. That logic is an A = A = A computation which is the formula of stupidity so choose your words carefully. Letting go can be the hardest thing... ask any parent.

Take it as a give or take figure Mr miyagi, seeing as only 40000 of said attendees where supporters of said clubs wow there would of been nearly extra 20000 seats for true fans not corporate smooches, but as a blues fan I sometimes forget corporate blue blood smooches are your lifeblood so real footy supporters don't count.
