By The Roar / Editor

Michael Voss isn’t putting any limits on what the Blues can achieve in his first few seasons at the helm.

I was 10 years old and living on the Gold Coast when the Bears played their first game. Vossy was 11 and had just moved from Victoria. He has written extensively about going to games at Carrara, then training and playing there. It makes sense when I think of his age relative to the Bears coming into the VFL that he was a fan of the Blues, particularly as they were successful in that period. I still maintain he was a Bears fan from the start, but most kids just had two teams because the Bears were hot garbage.

It's different in non-Victorian States where people had a VFL team until expansion brought teams to Sydney, Perth, Gold Coast/Brisbane, Adelaide, Fremantle and Port Adelaide. We went for the Bears, but the Hawks were pretty amazing back then and plenty of QLD kids had a few years worth of switching back and forth. It may not be a Victorian thing to do, but you've got to understand that once the comp went national people dumped their Vic team when their city gets its own club.

Watch the Lions doco on AFL on Demand about the Lions. Nothing current interviews with Vossy, but nobody had anything bad to say about him unless it was to show how Lethal turned Vossy into an uncompromising competitor. There won't be any doubts after that. The guy is a winner.

Yeah, he has told stories about waiting on the side of the highway at Eagleby to get a lift to training at 15. He wrote a great story about the day at Carrara when Simon Beasley marked the ball next to the behind post to have a shot after the siren to win the game. The gatekeepers swung open the gates to the oval and 300 kids went running out as Beasley, who kicked a tonne that year, missed and the Bears won. Vossy and I were both kids on that same oval. Mick Malthouse was Doggies coach then and he's still pissed off about it. They made a Mars Bar Ad out of it. Had to be 1988. Vossy was there.

He has said he was a huge Blues fan before he started with the Bears in 1992.

Nah my personal recollection of life is becoming fanatical about sports around the age of 7. He lived in Victoria until 11 and happened to move to Queensland the same time the Bears started. Allegiances to a club are often already made by that age. I don’t recall many of my primary school mates switching allegiances and they still support the same teams today. His stories about Ken Hunter and the Dominator fit perfectly.

Voss was an enthusiastic Blues supporter along with his Grandfather. He said he has fond memories of the 1987 premiership and his favourite players were Ken Hunter & Wayne Johnston.

I see Voss is already getting splinters up his a$$. Talk about hedging your bets and sitting on the fence. Once again, I'm not sure about this appointment.

In 30 years of reading about Michael Voss from his days as a junior and his recollections of being a kid following the Bears at Carrara, I have never once heard him say he barracked for Carlton. I think he means that kids in the 80s had their team but followed either Essendon, Carlton or Hawthorn in the Grand Final. By the way, speaking of Queensland juniors, the Queensland U19s side just held off a final quarter comeback from the Tasmania U19s. Some players to watch in the upcoming draft from both sides.

We just need to have some luck with injuries, build fitness on those that are fading late in games and implement a defensive plan. Those things alone can make the difference between 13th and finals. Filling the midfield holes can make the rest up. We may not have a team atm that can get top 4 but at least should have the opportunity to get into the 8.

Agree. We've underperformed for too long, it's time to step up and/or trade out those not putting in the effort.

Why would he rule it out? Where the Blues list is they should be playing finals. Teague may have been hard done by but the Blues should have made the eight this year.
