Marnus Labuschagne carved out another Test century and, aided by 40s from David Warner and Steve Smith, helped Australia to a position of strength after the first day of the opening Test against New Zealand. Catch the second day’s play from 4pm AEDT live with The Roar.

On what looked like a good, solid pitch at Optus Stadium, Australia would be reasonably happy with the position they find themselves after Day 1. On a hot opening day in Perth, they might not have been over-attacking in their approach but to go to stumps at 4/248 gives them a sound footing for the rest of the Test match.

And they have Labuschagne to thank for that.

Having been brought into the Test XI as a concussion substitute for Steve Smith during the Ashes, he has grabbed hold of the number three spot by the scruff of its neck. For the third Test innings in a row, he showed why he’s rated so highly.

Walking out to bat after the early wicket of Joe Burns, Labuschagne showed all the confidence that any batsman would have had smeared all over his batting after back-to-back centuries. And that pulled him through to his third in as many knocks.

Take no credit away from the New Zealand bowlers, though. Four wickets on an opening day might not sound a lot but they toiled hard and were successful in a couple of things.

One, they didn’t allow Steven Smith to take advantage of an early spilled chance and dismissed him for 43. They also never allowed the run rate to get away from them, restricting Australia to just 2.75 runs an over on a good surface.

By comparison, the hosts scored at 3.67 and 4.63 RPO in their two innings against Pakistan.

New Zealand will want to use that pressure to pick up a couple of quick wickets on the second day. Another hour of wicketless bowling in the baking heat will force them into playing catch-up.

Unfortunately, things have been made considerably more difficult due to Lockie Ferguson’s injury. The debutant quick picked up a calf injury on Day 1 and has been ruled out of the rest of the Test.

Be sure to join The Roar for live coverage of this second day of the first Test between Australia and New Zealand from 4pm (AEDT) and don’t forget to drop a comment in the section below.

Yeh #7 has to go as well. Worst captain ever, can't bat, and as for his keeping, Carey leaves him for dead. As Smith cannot captain, I would give the job straight to Carey.

I think we're going into unchartered territory. Relatively few tests in near future, the political and physical vagaries of Pink Tests, questions of who'll captain, etc. Positions of opener, at least one, and #5 & 6 all in flux. ---- All new navigational skills....

Just laughing at Pierro's s..t. Was into Paine from first ball, so just sitting back and cackling. The brains trust have done brilliantly, batting till tea, and having the bc's 5/109 at stumps. But it is all Paine's fault they are not all out already. Let's see "bad bowling changes", "poor field placings", "bad DRS decisions" etc. Just love it.

But those alleged doctors don't visit Adlaide in a heat wave. Perth is lucky it gets a sea breeze when a hot spell, such as is current, is in swing. But you are right, there is no such thing as a Doctor of Pt Adelaide or Glenelg.

You can bring as many unopened bottles of water in as you like. Also filtered water stations throughout the stadium to fill up.

You need the Port Adelaide Doctor. Or the Glenelg Doctor. Or the Christies Beach Doctor, which would nicely emanate from across the SA Water wastewater treatment Plant at Christies Beach (which I have personally inspected)

night mate. i hope they don't gauge you for water out there , hopefully they ley you bring some in. worth taking an empty water bottle mate despite it being a pain in the backside . almost seems to wise to go after first session if you go again its so hot there

Hope you enjoyed today out there, was a good evening to be at the match . These DN matches are not dull I have to admit. They are talking sydney of trying one there. I tend to think Sydney day red ball tests can always get results. if rain doesn't effect them though, they can get quite exciting .

It will be an interesting Day 3. Well, the heat has taken a bit out of me. And the purchase of water has taken a bit out of my wallet. Goodnight from me Pierro. Enjoy tomorrow!

IF we wanted a result there and its a flat test. pattinson and taking a flyer on swepson would be a real curveball , they won’t do it though. I like the idea of resting starc there if its a road his record indicates it wouldn’t be a bad move there , I’m not sure selectors will do so. They just need to remember going from perth to mcg last year off a win at perth. it wasn’t good sticking with same team

he has and I feared wagner before the match, he's been in very good form and is fired up. This is going to get trickier after this test I fear. Thank god boult didn't play at perth he gets it moving around in DN pinks, he was lethal in adelaide in 2015. Has an average of 12 in DN tests lowest of the lot. We dodged a bullet wining toss but hazel wood injury make this tricky IF they can bat out the first two sessions tomorrow potentially . I think we will get there but two pace bowlers is tricky in 40c heat . we need this pitch to crack up asap
