With their finals hopes hanging by a thread, the Brisbane Heat visit the Melbourne Renegades at Marvel Stadium for the final game of the BBL09 home-and-away season. Join The Roar for live coverage, with live scores and a blog of the match from 2:45pm (AEDT).
The equation is simple for the Heat: if they want to play finals, they’ll need to overcome the bottom-placed Renegades this Monday afternoon.
A win will see them host the Hurricanes in the Eliminator on Thursday, while a loss would result in another wasted season, something the Heat are becoming known for.
If their recent form – a season-defining win over the minor premiers – is anything to go by, then the Heat should be playing finals next week, but as shown before, Brisbane have proven to be one of the most inconsistent teams in the competition.
The Heat were nothing short of dominant in their last outing on Saturday, posting 5-186 at the MCG and following it up by dismantling the ladder-leading Stars for just 115.
Their thumping win – which most importantly boosted their net run rate – provides them with the opportunity to host an elimination final on Thursday night, but first they must deal with the Renegades, who Aaron Finch said are out to ruin other sides’ finals chances.
Though a century to the Renegades’ skipper wasn’t enough to spoil the Sixers’ top-two chances, Melbourne – despite only winning two games this season – seem to have finally recaptured some of their title-winning form at the back end of the season.
One of those two wins came against none other than the Brisbane Heat, a match that saw the Heat record the worst batting collapse in the history of the Big Bash, losing 10-36 and putting their finals hopes on life support.
After the Renegades posted 6-164, the Heat started their innings in tremendous fashion and looked set for an easy win, with Chris Lynn and Sam Heazlett leading their side to 0-84 in just under six overs.
Then, as is the beauty of T20 cricket, it all changed very quickly as the Heat lost ten wickets for just 36 runs, including their last seven wickets for seven runs.
It was a performance that only the Brisbane Heat were capable of doing, and it is a performance the Heat cannot afford to recreate if they are to scrape into the top five on the final day of the regular season.
Prediction
Despite their dominant win over the Melbourne Stars, the Heat have continuously failed to build on strong performances all season long.
With nothing to lose, the bottom-placed Renegades have said they want to spoil the party for the remaining teams still in finals contention and although they missed out with the Sixers on Saturday, the final match of the year provides the perfect opportunity.
Expect the Renegades to record their third win of the season as the players from five other franchises let out a sigh of relief knowing they won’t be dealing with AB de Villiers in the finals.

Was in there this arvo - and a weird sort of game. The Heat looked to have the batting line up to rip the game apart. However - remembering back to the start of the season for the 'Gades.....we only had Boyce bowling quality spin......how much better have the 'Gades been with Patel and Nabi in combination. They were the guys to bowl out today and for the Heat likewise for their spinners. I was surprised that Labuschagne wasn't tried earlier. Renshaw and Labuschagne steadied the ship for the Heat - however - for a long while were only going a run a ball and just weren't hurting the 'Gades. Really needed 160 minimum if not 170 - but clearly felt they couldn't afford to drop a wicket with the frailty to follow. The 'Gades batting......somewhat felt that Finch and Nabi was make or break and they played it pretty well although Finch's innings was funny - - coming off a 100; he couldn't connect cross bat shots.......swung and missed a bit and tried to throw away his hand just shy of 50. But - he held the innings together....just weird having him hitting 50 in the backend of the 19th over.

It appears the boys club culture Boof had with Smith and Warner has been replicated at the Heat with Lynn and Cutting? Why would you bowl Cutting when he bowled garbage in the previous overs?

Chris Lynn and Boof haven’t given him a go? Either he isn’t good enough or he’s never been given the opportunity. It can be difficult for a young players confidence when he gets zero backing from the team leaders.

The loss brings the Heat's season to a heartbreaking end, with Darren Lehmann's side needing a win today to sneak into finals for the first time since BBL06. It's a familiar feeling for the Heat, who have struggled to make the most of their big-hitters at the top of the order, with today's loss displaying how much they continue to rely on their early batsmen.

While Finch picked up player of the match honours, the Renegades bowlers - who had struggled to restrict teams in BBL09 - put in a strong performance, restricting the Heat to 154 as Nabi and Patel both finished with figures of 1-23.

Goodbye Heat. Goodbye Boof. No names mentioned however when you keep selecting some of your underperforming mates it's no more than you deserve.

The Melbourne Renegades win by 7 wickets with 4 balls remaining, ending the Brisbane Heat's season in nail-biting fashion. Aaron Finch (63* off 49) and Mohammed Nabi (38* off 28) guided their side over the line with a match-winning 87-run partnership.

Probably sums up the Heat that last ball. Renegades need 1 to win and the mid off is on or just outside the circle. Mind boggling

Well that's that, the batting wasn't good enough to make a par score, and the bowling was ok but also not good enough to defend it. The biggest miss was the top 4 for the Heat, so much power/class and they just didn't get anything, forced the game into a defensive mode through the middle and just couldn't accelerate far enough after, Renshaw played well though.

Wow, two absolutely woeful fielding efforts from Prestwich have cost the Heat a finals spot.

Prestwidge was in the team as an allrounder, didn't make a score, and hasn't bowled has dropped a chance and miffed a simple fielding chance. Talk about sabotage.

REN 3-147 (18.5) | Laughlin to Finch. One ball left in Laughlin's final over. The Renegades currently need 8 off 7.
