Cricket is an unusual game. Not anyone would have predicted that a Melbourne derby would be the final outcome of a BBL league that has gone on for longer than any other high-profile cricket tournament in history.

Both the Renegades and the Stars have a chance to make BBL history today, as neither team has ever won the trophy since the tournament’s inception back in 2011.

The best result for the Stars so far has been runners-up in the BBL 05, while the Renegades have been semi-finalists in BBL 02, 07 and 08.

The opportunity for inaugural BBL glory awaits both teams who are hungry to grab the coveted prize.

If we analyse each team’s road to the final, their campaigns could not be any more similar.

Neither side can really call themselves the best team of the tournament – that honour goes to the Hobart Hurricanes who only lost four games for the entire season but bowed out when it really mattered.

The Renegades have only won one game more than the Stars, and thanks to a few resounding and comfortable victories in the latter end of the tournament, they see their net run rate propel them into second place.

The Melbourne Stars are truly the underdogs in this game.

Languishing at sixth and seventh on the BBL ladder for much of the season, some brave leadership by Glen Maxwell, with important contributions from Marcus Stoinis, Nepalese superstar Sandeep Lamichchane and Ben Dunk allowed them to keep their noses just in front for finals contention, and they made it in by the skin of their teeth.

Despite their spirited efforts, their bowling remains a big weak link, with not a single Stars player amongst the top ten wicket-takers for BBL 09.

Prediction
When these two teams clashed in the qualifying games, the Stars recorded comfortable victories over the Renegades each time.

Don’t expect this to be the case on this occasion though.

The Renegades have a beefed-up batting line up with plenty of international experience. Expect the likes of Aaron Finch, Cameron White and Dan Christian to feast on a weakened Stars bowling line-up once they get going.

If the Stars aren’t careful, the Renegades could run away with the trophy before they know it.

I know it is stretching it a lot but this is an example of a champion team beating a team of champions. Talent vs grit, Cooper & Christian dug in while the Stars batsmen wanted to be heroes. Go 'Gades 2019/20! PS Good luck to Australia in the WC with Stoinis, Hanscomb & Maxwell in the top 7 :(

Half the reason I picked the Renegades was because Ed was a Stars man, the other half was Finch was a Renegade.

As far as marketing goes, Stars are inner city, eastern suburbs and Gippsland whilst the Renegades are the north western suburbs and country Victoria

Gotta say that was abysmal from Handscomb and later from the in Dunk. They seemed intent on getting out. And why was Madison playing. Guess that's the new standard of cricket in BBL and certainly a few bars lower than the BBL standard set in the past. To many average cricketers in the BBL now for it to attract more attention. BPL Bangladesh is where the guns want to play at this time of year. We're stuck with the B grade.

I think it's a little unfair to say the Stars choked and lost. The Renegades eked and ground their way to a defendable total and keep the runrate in check. The required rate never dropped below 7. Dunk and Stoinis showed no urgency or inclination to do more than cruise. Boyce bowled Stoinis with genuine variation, slowish arm ball almost. The Renegades stayed in the game and got their tails up. So it's not really about the Stars losing, the Renegades genuinely worked hard for the upper hand.

Feel sorry for the Stars fans - after the 93 run platform laid by Stoinis and Dunk it should have been a cake walk - they'll be having nightmares for the next 12 months

Wow, what an incredible final. I'm speechless! The Stars looked in total control for three-quarters of the entire game. Ben Dunk and Marcus Stoinis seemed set to guide the Stars to a comfortable victory, blunting the Renegades bowling attack without much risk. But then it happened. In the 13th over. Stoinis was done by a beautiful legspinner from Boyce which castled into his middle stump. From there, it was just a procession of wickets. Captain Aaron Finch kept his cool, controlling his bowlers well and strategically placing his fielders in the right areas, as one by one the Stars' batsmen holed out into the deep. A requirement of 28 runs off the last 6 balls was always going to be too much of an ask as the Melbourne Stars grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory. Earlier, the Renegades also experienced a middling performance with the bat, with big hitters Marcus Harris, Sam Harper and Aaron Finch all getting out cheaply after looking to threaten early on. Finch was perhaps the most unluckiest one, getting run out off an accidental deflection from Marcus Stoinis. The ball was driven straight on Stoinis' boot, which then ricocheted onto the stumps at the non-striker's end. Poor Finch was out of his ground by about 30 cm, as he had no time to go back and ground his bat. A frustrated Finch departed with the Renegades' hopes hanging in the balance, and something special would be needed to salvage at least a respectable score to defend. Dan Christian and Tom Cooper answered the call, putting on a vital 80 run partnership which lifted the 'Gades to a barely defendable score of 145, after they were left reeling at 5 for 65. From there, the Stars looked in complete and utter control until the that fateful over. 146 would prove to be a mountain to climb in the end. Long will this game be remembered as the Miracle at the Marvel. I hope you all enjoyed my coverage today of the grand final of BBL 08! Thanks to all our readers at The Roar for tuning into this rollercoaster game of cricket today. We hope to see you all again for the next edition of the Big Bash League next summer! Thanks for your company, cheers.

It's always been reasonably obvious that they represent roughly these two ideals: - Stars: Represent tradition and old school cricket (yes I know it's T20). They play at the MCG, home of cricket in Melbourne. - Renegades: Represent 'new cricket'. Those who want to go against the grain and support something a bit rebellious. Hence their non traditional home ground of Docklands. From memory, that is how they explained the teams at the start of the Big Bash. And of course, red v green.

It was losing 6/15 that killed them.

Yeah, i presumed Sydney Thunder were western Sydney’s team, similar to GWS area… they share the same ground. Are Stars supporters Eddie fans, and the rest go for Renegades?

Depends if you like Green or Red. In Sydney, its Thunder (West) vs Sixers (Rest)

How do Melbournians decide which team to follow between Renegades and Stars? Their home grounds are near each other, so there doesn't appear to be a geographical reason...

Just rang my Victorian Relatives who are Stars fans. Angry AF. The big question is how did a team only with 3 50s all tournament actually win the tournament. And obviously, what happened to the Stars?

More like the Stars have given this game away than the Renegades have won it - one of the biggest chokes of all time
