Sri Lanka host Australia in the battle for the Warne-Muralitharan Trophy in Galle. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary of Day 1 from 2:30pm AEST.

The picturesque Galle International Cricket Stadium is the venue for what should be some engrossing Test cricket.

We don’t really know what to expect although the Australian team is predicting that it will turn from ball 1.

There was talk during the week about which spin bowlers the Aussies would go with. Pat Cummins confirmed that Mitch Swepson got the nod alongside Nathan Lyon.

It was of course, on this tour just over a decade ago that Lyon (with hair) burst onto the international scene dismissing Kumar Sangakkara with his first ball in Test cricket.

On that occasion, Lyon came into the attack in the 15th over of the first Test and we could see spin even earlier than that this time around.

The last time Australia played a Test in Sri Lanka was 2016 and it was the home side who got some revenge on the Aussies.

They won the series 3-0 on the back of Rangana Herath taking 28 wickets at the ridiculous average of 12.75.

Herath has, of course, retired now but Sri Lanka have plenty of up and coming talent including Dunith Wellalage. He was named as a standby player for this series but Sri Lanka will be tempted to play him

The 19-year-old slow left-arm orthodox bowler picked up 9 wickets in the ODI series and proved a handful for the Aussies.

32-year-old Jeffrey Vandersay is also in the squad but is yet to play a Test. The leg-break bowler has taken 25 wickets in his ODI career.

As we saw in Pakistan earlier this year, all the talk of spin can actually overshadow Australia’s strength which is currently pace bowling.

If Mitchell Starc is fit he’ll be a handful again with reverse swing and of course captain Pat Cummins can cause some damage. He’s been kept relatively fresh this tour to put in the hard yards for the series.

It should be a fascinating contest. We’ll have the news from the toss and the all-important final XIs when they’re announced.

Or perhaps he should have watched his partner instead of the ball rolling to point/cover, and putting his hand up.

The IMF will end up stepping up and over time some of the debt will end up being waived. So long as they show structural reform in their governance and financial management. And if the Government is dragged into doing that, the whole country will eventually benefit. So hopefully this situation becomes a long term blessing in disguise.

Honors even Day 1. Australia would want a lead of 70 to 100 batting second and fourth so alot of work to do to get to that 280 to 300 I think they need . Two precious wickets thrown away by labs and khawaja with the run out place this match in an even unpredictable place now

Good summary Jeff but the 7 billlion debt is a damning stat they need 5 billion to pay creditors by end of year

They'll get through this I'm sure. Hopefully it spurs on some fundamental governance changes re waste and corruption - in fact I'm sure that will be the case as their drawdown on the IMF and the likes of economic support from India, will come with conditions that demand such improvements. But there will be some pain (great pain for some) for a decade at least, sadly. They are so well positioned at an Asian/Middle Eastern crossroads, to be a tourism hotspot; hopefully they can capitalise on that again. SL offers many things a tourist/traveler could want. And again, so perfectly located. Imagine if they turned Colombo into an airline hub/stopover/transfer point, in the way Singapore and Bangkok have since the '80s? And the way Hong Kong did previously? The opportunity is there; hopefully they can seize the moment whilst their financial situation offers great returns for off-shore capital investment.

Enjoyable first day's play. Will reiterate comments from the white ball series: well done CA for committing to this tour in a difficult time for the country. The easy decision would have been to cancel. But that would have been the worst outcome for the country. They need this, if for no other reason to keep going a sense of normality and something to look forward to; and that life goes on. They will get out of this; let's not add to the despair by abandoning the tour. The Australian team's resource (food/fuel) footprint is inconsequential versus their beneficial social footprint re distraction and cricket-joy.

Yeah, I was pretty close to touring re this series. But ultimately pulled out for selfish reasons re travel/living difficulties, but also recognising that, whilst tourism is a major economic input to the economy (tourism is Sri Lanka's #1 economic driver and the current economic problems are primarily driven by the pandemic outcomes of two years, plus inept governance), that at this time presence in the country, in an immediate sense, would be much more of a drain on basic living resources, than any longer term benefit. However, I wouldn't be so negative re this tour going ahead. Ultimately the "negative" impact of 20-25 touring squad (players and support) re drain on resources, is far outweighed by the benefit of "continuity of normalcy" + joy of cricket, which the tour brings against the backdrop of all of the other hardships being faced by the population. There's no benefit in a complete withdrawal into despair which blackens out all light-shards of enjoyment/escapism, such as cancelling all sporting events, especially cricket.

Yes scenery wise , but it’s not good with the massive problems the country and it’s people are going thru now , can’t believe this test series went ahead , anyway tv subscription dollars will get their way when negotiating with a collapsed small country
