In what could be a very entertaining contest, the big-hitting West Indies will virtually enter the last-chance saloon as they take on an in-form New Zealand outfit in Manchester. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 10:30pm (AEST).
Coming into this game, the West Indies have just a single victory and a washout to show for their five matches. The win game all the way back in Match 2 of the tournament against Pakistan though, and while they have been competitive in other games, their inconsistency to stick to a plan and play good cricket for 100 overs has hurt them.
They came within inches of beating Australia, but were then plastered by England and has 322 chased down in 42 overs by Bangladesh in a bowling performance which, frankly, was abysmal.
Interestingly though, moving to Manchester may suit their big hitting batsmen down to the ground. It’s a reasonably flat track, and there are enough short boundaries to target if they are smart about it.
They weren’t smart against Bangladesh though, hitting to long boundaries more often than not, and the even bigger problem here is that they have to contend with genuine pace of guys like Trent Boult and Lockie Ferguson, who have been bowling like they have it on a string so far.
While the Black Caps haven’t been perfect, they have been pretty close, and as a result have four wins and a washout from their five matches.
Their last-start win against South Africa didn’t come without its problems on a difficult pitch, but as the Kiwis have done over the years, they always have someone stand up, with Kane Williamson leading the charge in that chase.
The only real question mark over New Zealand midway through the tournament is that they haven’t actually played a big name yet, with their game against India washed out – in saying that, beating South Africa should address some of those minor concerns.
Prediction
This could be a real cracker. Again, you just don’t know what you’ll get out of the West Indies, but it’s hard to look past the consistency and form of New Zealand, who should

Easily the game of the tournament. Full of emotion, and some entertaining cricket. The 23,000 at Old Trafford and millions of viewers were entertained today. New Zealand lucky to win and with that win they are the first team to qualify for the semis. Unfortunately for the West Indies, their campaign is over.

I was trying to explain to my wife why a single and some patience was required at the death. Slogging NZ’s best wasn’t the way to go. Hard to criticise such a brilliant rear guard fight but Neesham was a much better option for a boundary than Ferguson. Ahhhh. What a finish

New Zealand may have some worries as Scott writes but they also have now twice shown an ability to pull wins out of their hat. Something to consider as they progress into the semifinals. I am sorry I missed this, sounds like it was a great game of cricket.

New Zealand defeat West Indies by 5 runs That's one classic game of cricket. Absolutely unbelievable. It's ebbed and flowed all day long, but Carlos Brathwaite, take a bow. He got a century with his side out of it, but just couldn't get over the line. A game of about two metres in the end there as New Zealand survive by the skin of their teeth on the back of a Kane Williamson century and Trent Boult spell of bowling. The West Indies will say what if they didn't lose 4 for 11. New Zealand will have some worries moving forward, but what a game. New Zealand: 8/291 (50) West Indies: 10/286 (49)

WICKET! Carlos Brathwaite, Caught Trent Boult, Bowled James Neesham 101 (82) Brathwaite wants one or six here you'd think. Final ball of this Neesham over. And he is caught at long on! Only just. Two metres higher and it was six, but the club over long on to a ball halfway down is taken by Trent Boult, who only just keeps himself inside the boundary. WHAT A GAME. What an incredible game of cricket we have just watched. Brathwaite finishes on 101 off 81 balls. Over: 49 West Indies: 10/286 Required score: 292

Another slower ball, this shorter. Brathwaite swings and misses. It was rib height though, so not called, despite Michael Holding's plea in the commentary box. Over: 48.5 West Indies: 9/286 Required score: 292

100! Carlos Brathwaite Long on drops back now. Short again, and Brathwaite pulls off the hips this time. Woeful fielding in the deep, and he gets two to bring up his century, as Neesham lets out a big fbomb on the stump mic. 6 from 10, and Brathwaite is there off 80 balls. One shot could end it. Over: 48.4 West Indies: 9/286 Required score: 292

Bouncer from Neesham. A good one, and it's a swing and miss as Brathwaite looks to hit down the ground. Over: 48.2 West Indies: 9/284 Required score: 292

Comments thrown around that the back end of the WC will be pointless and boring. It's anything but.
