I firstly believe you should not have wickys, bowlers or all-rounders as captain. But l don't agree that Smith should be captain. He was average before on the field. But that glib acquiescence at lunch time talk, the clueless idiocy to not know it was going on despite them 2 talking about it and then the abdication of cricketing honour at the press conference showed a complete lack disregard for the office. ------ Chappelli was averaging 35 when given the captaincy and averaged 50 from that day forth. ------ Or get Finch. He has the team, he's a good man and, like Chappelli or Waugh, you could see him come of age.

Spot on for me this time lawson basically reiterates all I've been saying since the ashes but it took a series loss for .any to say it. I'd still go smith in front of cummins for now as captain. Lawson does actually outline things well and documents paines mistakes with fields and bowlers well . Rowdy as always we pretty in unison but lets just suppose many are speculating on what actually happened that day. Smith probably had no idea it was sandpaper. Its pretty hard to conjure up. It could have been two guys having a sheepish chat and perhaps all smith could have said is don’t do anything ott but warner is vice captain and has run riot himself over years and at times no one reigned him in from pub fights to stairwell fights to ott celebrations. He has been reigned in a bit now via the scandal for sure . Warner on the face it could have done anything last minute and got the sandpaper himself and just not told smith or management. Negligence is one thing , intent is another mate. There is every chance smith was on the field and looked up to see sandpaper when we all did. No doubt there was probably a consensus to rough the ball up though there often is . If smith actually planned it from get go , id probably share your opinion but if he’s negligent for dealing with it badly after the fact which he is I can forgive him as he’s been through a lot with media and huge ban . It would be fascinating to know exactly how it went down in a way as I feel there is huge speculation so often . No doubt smith was negligent and if it comes out he was there suggesting sandpaper then I would share your view mate. Either way I’m not so sure CA have the guts to change anything with paines captaincy . We will be lucky to get a rotation for starc, lyon , harris and wade the way the selectors and langer go. Id settle for carey just getting in to bat for wade if CA refuses to budge on captaincy. Pierro, I usually agree with you but on Smith? No way. Had l been Smith at lunchtime that fateful day I would've burnt Warner's ears. There was no way you could allow to let that go with a weak, ineffective glib warning such what as Smith did. Smith can be captain his sentence of suspension long over . As we faff about in indecision england are secretly hoping paine stays on as captain and they are all taking pot shots at us not changing the situation . They will be delighted if paine stays on as captain for ashes

Seeing everyone dismissing BBL is confusing… A talent is a talent… And unless given the chance, you can’t be sure.. Exciting to have carey inglis and pierson . Not immune to carey batting keeping and inglis then taking over or pierson . Important we get these changes going now though. I can’t see the point in placating paine and his desired send off next year after an awful home loss and losing at gabba . Carey and inglis stengthen the test team big time . Inglis can also play for england so we want to select him

Carey was talented junior sportsman by all accounts but it doesn't change the fact he chose footy in those late teen early 20s until returning to cricket at 22-23. It might of only been 4yrs or so but would have set him back. He was was originally picked as a specialist batsman and only started keeping in 2015 after failing to cement a top 6 batting position . You can carry a batsman who keeps for the limited overs stuff but in test cricket you need a proper keeper who can keep consistantly for 100 overs plus. In first class cricket Peirson avg 31.4 only 2.4 runs less than Carey and Peirson is by far the better keeper. The other option i would suggest for keeper would be Josh Inglis. I really dont consider Wade as a top 6 batesman and would happily see Carey take that position

U smith cam captain for me it's not like it was his idea to get sandpaper out chalk that one up to warner who as vc should be able to be relied on if there is any ideology to rough a ball up as all teams do . What we get if smith captains is more agreessive fields and better field placings , better drs and better bowling changes . Sure he's a bit myopic off field but who cares . He'll be a better captain with more focus and less tolerance for idiocy which is what warner is . The bonus is we get carey going now . I agree he can bat though and I've always said it after all we played both wade and paine . Inglis and carey could play the same way though too . Still assuming CA won't get rid of paine perhaps your idea is a salient one

I think Carey should come in as batsman first and then Paine can be eased out in a year. There is no other captaincy option right now
