Is this the worst umpiring decision in BBL history?

By The Roar / Editor

And the explanation from the umpire is even more farcical!

The umpire in the Heat game last night said, hold my beer!

Disappointed in Khawaja because he stood his ground after already being on the end of one howler in this BBL season? Why I was always taught as a kid that you don't walk. The Umpires don't call you back when they get it wrong and fire you. So why would you save the umpiring embarrassment of when you clearly it hit but they give you not out? Double standards anyone? As for the Broad garbage. The old saying comes to mind about people giving him grief.... you don't need to have a long neck to be a goose.

Yeah I always thought it was a bit over the top all the condemnation of Broad within Australia when so many Australians at all levels of the game will do the exact same thing. I'm disappointed in Khawaja though.

There is probably cronyism in the umpiring associations in the grade ranks which means more talented umpires are probably left wallowing in 3rd and 4th grade instead of rising higher and having a shot at breaking into domestic level. You’ve got to remember too there are captain’s reports on umpiring performance and this is a problem for three reasons: 1. They are rarely objective and usually biased, 2. An umpire can get all decisions right, but it only takes one or two players on either team to carry on like sooks about a decision and suddenly most of both teams become conned into thinking the umpire is wrong, particularly with a batsman being given out and 9 of his team far from the action and just assuming the umpire is wrong – refer back to point 1, and 3. At these levels there is no televised coverage to vindicate the umpire in respect of point 2.

Thunder were on the receiving end of a bad one the other night. Not that it mattered they one, but there seems to be at least 1 a match and some of these umpires look as though they should be in retirement villages.

This is the worst non-news to get idiotic coverage from challenged reporters. There was no obvious deviation so only the snick. Australia missed a snick in Indias first innings in Adelaide. They were as alert as this umpire. Just reporting mediocrity, which is the norm now.

His biggest mistake was explaining it to the bowler. He should have said, "not out, because that's my decision. Go to your mark"

I agree. NRL introduced a 2nd. referee to monitor the other area of the field, thus providing immeasurable assistance to the main official. In cricket, the square leg umpire is called on for run outs & stumping & also I understand counts the legitimate deliveries per over as a double check for the other umpire. The rest is up to the umpire at the bowlers end; count legal deliveries, no balls, wides, LBW’s, catches etc. It’s a difficult gig & they have to be fully focused & alert at all times. I wonder what impact it has on those seeking a career as a match official in any sport when occasional errors are put under the microscope. Relatively speaking, it’s only a game & a pilot or surgeon error would have more far reaching circumstances.

No doubt an incorrect decision and yet....and yet....I feel reluctant to criticise the umpire. He is trying to do his job, he made an error and now everyone is putting the boot in. I’m glad I never had a person follow me around at work with a camera recording every action I took, both good and bad.

Yes it's a terrible decision, hopefully an isolated brain fade for the umpire in question.

Well, that umpire needs a career change. Secondly, funny how no one calls Khawaja a cheat, but people lined up to lynch Stuart Broad.
